Following an appearance on the label’s debut compilation ‘Coloring Lessons Volume 1’ which featured Kush Jones, Levon Vincent, bergsonist and more, NYC’s Malik Hendricks returns for the label’s second outing with four more slices of deliciously deep and jazzy house, backed with a stunning remix from Byron The Aquarius.
Opener ‘Deeper Than’ marries deep kicks and hazy guitar licks over a vocal monologue, followed by title track ‘Cutting Shapes’ upping the pace with frantic vocal chops, sizzling claps and deft chord work.
‘D.W.E.L.E’ brings a laidback feeling to the release, with textured samples rolling through a masterful arrangement from Hendricks. 
‘Dance To The Music’ sees tight drum hits skipping across dusty piano and slick keys before Byron The Aquarius closes out the EP in style with a typically musical remix, taking ‘Deeper Than’ for a spaced-out journey through a kaleidoscope of synthy flair, chunky percussion and groovy basslines.

Apparel Music continue their noble quest to nourish our ears and souls with their latest offering, KX9000's 'Plaisance Food EP'. Hot on the heels of label boss Kisk's excellent and suitably titled 'Jazzyness' album, here they continue to offer a glimpse of life through their organic house-tinted lens – serving up a selection of tunes that are as suited to nourishing the soul as moving one's feet.

Though London-based, the Apparel crew have been busily scouting for talent via the French underground, understandably so considering what fertile ground this has long proven itself to be. This time out, they present work from DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist, KX9000, following on from his previous releases on labels including Pont Neuf and Better Listen. The result is a warm and varied EP of cuts which combine cleverly-crafted musicianship with an aptitude for groove, and just enough deviance to satisfy grubby sensibilities.

The low-slung feel of opening track 'Millenium Civic' is a gentle intro to proceedings. Emotive chords evolve under delicate top-lines as synth stabs and motifs glide in and out to create a lucid dream state. 'Unusual Lines' is one of the highlights, combining atmospheric chords, an urgent tempo, and – most importantly – a bastard acid line to full heads-down dance effect. Vocal chops, discrete percussion and hidden layers add energy and mystery in equal measure, and the purposeful spoken word sample completes the sonic landscape. Paul Cut's remix of 'Unusual Lines' endows the music with something of a classic US deep house feel, dare I say shades of Boo Williams or Glenn Underground here as the sub-bass powers over snappy beats and jazzy vibes solos.

I've opted to play you Ground Plane Aerial's remix of 'Millenium Civic'. While locked down there has understandably been a tendency to gravitate toward gentle tempos and horizontal sonic-soothing, so after pushing play on this one the allegro rhythm jumped out at me like some kind of charging disco rhinoceros. Utilising the original instrumentation while beefing things up quite considerably, GPA's version is effectively dance-floor dynamite. The well-programmed drums fills and drops give the track a manic live feel, while the dramatic arrangement and musical flourishes add fuel to the fire. The roof is well and truly off when the freaky lead synths eventually pop in, leading to uniform fist-pumping and pogo dancing.*

* I can certify this with more than a degree of certainty, the clubs are (for now) open in these ends, and both the 'Millenium Civic' remix and 'Unusual Lines' have been thoroughly road-tested and Cosmic Tiger approved.

The Slovak-Irish record label based in Dublin presents its first VA, a colourful 12’’ double pack. It is a unique project. All tracks are made by well known Slovak producers such as Milos, Sensoreal, GoodMood, RiZa, Paradiso Rhythm, Deepologic, Richard Scholtz, Tex Bates, Marosh and DJ M4SH. As the cover suggests, a the whole VA is great release for listening to the living room but also for dancing on the dance floor in a club. You will find a variety of tracks that represent individual producers and cities/towns they live in.

PREMIERE: Bress Underground - Take Over [WAREBLUES]

Joel Holmes is a phenomenon that fits perfectly into the musical scenario of the next years. 35-year-old American jazz pianist and 4 times Grammy nominated. He was the musical director of Carl Craig’s Synthesizer ensemble as well as the keyboarder in legendary Grammy wining band of Roy Hargrove (the IT jazz artist from the late 1990ies, who later died.)

Holmes is always hunting for the new, so he moved to Berlin a few years ago. Being interested in what’s happening in that new dance world. Similar to Jazzers from the 1970ies like Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones who turned into disco stars Joel, the jazzer wanted to connect with the new Berlin electronic scene. He succeeded, teamed up with upcoming London house kid Cody Currie and the Toy Tonics crew who is working on new sounds in Berlin that connect the organic and jazz musicians scene with the dance and house world. Developing a new style of Jazz-House… (that has nothing to do with sampled jazzy‘ house! If you know what we mean).

Joel and Cody Currie released 2 EPs that had a good buzz mainly in the UK and USA. Big support from the Worldwide FM and BBC Radio world as well from tastemaker DJs such as Bradley Zero, Gilles Peterson and Masters at Work.

While working on these EPs Joel created a kind of new jazz-dance universe around him in Berlin. He curates a bi-monthly jam session in an underground location where the crème de la crème of the international ex-pad -musician scene meet up. Joel became THE MAN to hang out when American musicians come to Berlin. Like when Erykah Badu was doing her Berlin gig in Berlin in 2019, after the show all the band moved to Joel's place to have a legendary jam session. Yes, there is a lot of happening in the new Berlin Jazz meets Electronic scene. And Joel Holmes is in the center now.

So it’s time for a Joel Holmes Solo EP. The EP was recorded in a couple of jam sessions. Later reworked and co-produced by Kapote and Sam Ruffillo and mixed by Justin Vanderfolgen from DFA in New York.

It’s a big step for Joel Holmes. He started to sing in a very smooth, deep way. He wanted to make dance tracks that have a song structure and should not be too static, but still be playable in good DJ sets. And that's what you get: A Lot of Soul. Deep House vibes in a New York style and Joel's skills as a keyboarder.

Joel Holmes is a phenomenon, for sure. And this EP could be a manifesto for what he is doing in Berlin now.
