The third offering in our mix series is a live recording of Priori and Cousin's dj set at Sustain Release 2024. Recorded on the last morning between 6am and 1pm on what was meant to be an ambient stage, it featured everything a 3 day festival closing set should. Eclectic picks, strange and emotional sounds, dubious transitions and a few feigned endings. Massive thanks to all the dancers, the Sustain staff (Aurora, Ash and everybody else who put their blood, sweat and tears into this), the music makers, the birds, the stars.

"The environment: these tracks bring me to a very quiet & calm part of my day, in a space where I don’t have to do anything but listen. I am in a sunlit room, the light is poured over the rug where I’m lying down and it’s so still I can see the dust particles in the air. These are moments of peace, nostalgia, and anxiety: thoughts can enter at their own pace & they can exist in the past, present, and future (I acknowledge, slightly anxiously, about how this time is already in the past)

The thought: music that moves me is both comforting and discomforting - its ethereal and mysterious, distant and haunting, but at the same time all familiar (like when u dream about something that feels real but you know its not…but was it?)

Some of these tracks are to get me into that state, pretty much the first half of the playlist (to be chilled). Then I’m able to wander into uncharted territory with last nine and that’s where a lot of my inspiration comes from when I produce. 

…there's an inherent ambiguity in human nature and I feel like the more you try to make sense of the unknown, the harder it is to see how beautiful (and enticing) the ambiguity is… a lot of that  ambiguity is explained to me through music…"

"The morning before I shaped this list for after the after I was exiting the subway from my stop in Brooklyn and 4 undercover cops grabbed me, shoved me against a wall, searched me, and charged me with nothing. I was alone, but years prior a parallel situation occurred to my friends and I. The violence exhibited by these ‘officers’ immediately brought up these memories from my childhood. Putting this music together was so feeling, so healing, and so necessary. 

When I prepare a set for the club, I love to close my eyes and envision the empty space. The architecture and the atmosphere. Music has the ability to change all of those frameworks. 

Listening through these songs I closed my eyes and focused more on the movement they create. Sound has always been related back to movement. My mother Joanie is a modern dancer, her endurance and endless stride has always pushed me. Many of these songs are from her. 

I think in a very cinematic pattern, each track represents a scene, these scenes are laid out to build my story."
