Back in the day I used to make straight-up DJ-friendly drum and bass with another party. This is a cross between that and... something else :p

Kinda wish I had access to a good set of EQs and compressors back then, this could have gone off a bit harder. On the other hand, I probably would have not known what I was doing and made it worse.

Universal Crusher (2000)

Found this on a casette tape. Made it while I was house engineer in a studio in North London for a few months in 1997/8. Sort of like pop mixed with my usual playful arrangements and over-the-top drumming :)

Another one rescued from a dusty tape, I haven't heard in 20 years.

Something I made in 1996 that pretty much defined my path as a sound artist. Before I'd heard of Luke Vibert, Squarepusher or Aphex Twin, I created this 23 minute Amiga track on a 1MB Amiga that spans the genres of ambient and jungle, because I wanted something to daydream and meditate to, something that could take me on a journey.

Sure, it may not be up to much snuff these days, and the sound quality is 8-bit and only has four voices, and a lot of the sounds had to be downsampled to get the most out of the memory, but this was a defining moment in my life, a sort of manifesto that I've tried to loosely follow and improve upon. It's also the longest track I've ever written, so if you want to try and get through all of it, I recommend laying back with headphones and closing your eyes :)

Shout out to everyone who has supported me thus far. Back then I just made this stuff for myself, me in my bedroom thinking thoughts and daydreaming. Had I been able to see the future, I'm not entirely sure I know what I'd have made of it. I think it would have scared the crap out of me.

Soft Illusions (23 minute Amiga MOD from 1996)

Another one found on a tape dated 1998. One of the first tracks made with my (then) new Akai S3000XL. Nothing but an Amiga running Octamed and that trusty sampler, recorded straight to casette.

One of my first Amen barnstormers. Effectively I realized I wanted to construct music like some sort of aural roller coaster. Start as you mean to go on ;)

I often dream about finding long lost tracks (literally dreaming, not just fantasizing), and this one was a pleasant suprise. I hope you enjoy it.

The guitar playing was done by my dad funnily enough, sampled and chopped up. He didn't really approve of what I did with it...

What I'm working on right now

Originally meant to be a screen-capture video which was marred by audio desync, I ripped out the audio section and cut out the best bits.

These sounds are mostly not very pretty, but they are impressively organic, full of analog artifacts, designed to showcase how Softube's Modular can hold it's own from high notes to booming bass notes with crazy modulations, wavefolding, thru-zero FM and triangle-core sync sweeps and the endless combinations of the above, which typically have sounded terrible in the digital domain, if they've even been attempted.

Full review to follow, but I am amazed by how similar this sounds to the clips I have heard of these hardware modules! Not a bread-and-butter machine, as it were, but invaluable for standout leads and acidics, deep basses, soaring high-pitched sawtooth sweeps, organic textures and fodder for further processing and sampling.

Future Starter (demo) aka What I'm Working On Right Now

First half is a three-bar canon I composed in a completely ad-hoc way, designed to sound OK locally but with no real tonal direction.

Second half is it's harmonization, with synth bass, pads and percussion, and the last part of the canon truncated such that it ends desiring a transposition up one whole-tone, leading to a "rising" effect.

Probably going to become a tune at some point.

Needs a bit of tighening, but I thought it was cool.

How to Basic Foley Loop

My first real patching sesh with my 0-coast, a couple of edits to remove harsh patching noise, and a delay added in Cool Edit Pro. Makenoise 0-Coast is a relatively affordable analog modular monosynth with a focus on waveshaping, sync, wavefolding, function generators, audio rate modulation and generally being a fascinating science-project-type device of audio transportation.

I mean, look, you plug cables (provided) into those holes (also provided), and cool stuff happens. You make a plan and execute it. You turn knobs and even crazier stuff happens. It's the ultimate busy board for grownups' inner children.

Oh, and there are flashing lights. Can we all agree that's a bonus?

Makenoise 0-Coast tweaking session + delay

The first movement of a piano-centric sonata form piece I'm working on. This is the exposition section where my themes are introduced, mostly finished, I just need to humanize the piano part... and then, onto the development section.

Originally I was just going to use the piano, but then I worked out I could use a saw pad for my string section and switch it to square waves for more of a woodwind sound, then I added the synth bass, cut up sounds, and finally the drum kit.

I dono. I am experimenting :)I don't know if I'll keep the breakbeat, but threw it in to see what would happen.

Zzibid was a collaboration between myself and an at-the-time friend who was a goth rocker and fellow synth enthusiast. The project was an attempt to fuse both of our genres but without really taking it too seriously, and as such we co-wrote the material, though I programmed and produced it.

Sadly, Zzibid was short lived, we created three tracks, or "jam sessions" including a pretty cool synth/vocal track before the band was broken up by a third party.

I should also take full responsibility for the cheesy organ solos in the middle :)

So I decided to put this up. Matthew Rann wrote the song while we were working together as Zzibid, I produced it and did most of the playing and mixing, but Rann had considerable creative input beyond just writing and singing the lyrics. Sadly the project was short-lived.

As well as hoping for people to enjoy my albums and whatever else I create, I am looking for soundtrack work - especially chiptune styled stuff. I am also involved in 2D level design work and have a full campaign that ships with the indie platformer VVVVVV by Terry Cavanagh, sitting alongsides the likes of contributors such as Notch of Minecraft fame. I LOVE designing game levels and virtual worlds.
