Night chorus into dawn chorus

The night's frogs give way to the dawn chorus on May 27, 2024. (Birds start singing in earnest about half an hour in, but it's nice to build up to them slowly.)



Birds identified (by the Merlin app, not my ears!): Northern cardinal, yellow warbler, veery, mallard, American goldfinch, song sparrow, American robin, red-winged blackbird, black-and-white warbler, American redstart, common yellowthroat, wood duck, gray catbird, Baltimore oriole, red-eyed vireo, American crow, brown thrasher, chestnut-sided warbler, black-capped chickadee, bald eagle, Eastern kingbird, northern parula, pileated woodpecker.

Dawn Chorus at the Piney Knoll Beaver Pond

Some of the sounds burrowing crabs make when inside their burrow. Recorded using Lom Geophones on Bang Ben beach, Laemson National Park, on the west coast of southern Thailand.

Great reed warbler - dawn chorus on the wetland

Common Nighthawk "peenting" and "wing booms" 3:58am on top of Schoodic Head (Schoodic Div., Acadia National Park). Edited, leveled and due to gusting winds and ocean noise, did high pass filter at 250hz. 

Recorded with Fostex FR2 and Sennheiser ME62 (would have used a different mic if I had known he would be here! Came for dawn chorus so only had the omni mic.)

Common Nighthawk at Schoodic Head

A small pond in the mountains of eastern West Virginia after sunset. The Wood Frogs and Spring Peepers are in full chorus with the unseasonably warm weather. Air temp 22C, water temp 13C.
Recorded with a SASS housing and two MKH20 microphones with windscreen and dead-cat wind cover into a SoundDevices 702 with no filtration.

This is a stereo mixdown of my six-channel sound installation made from material I collected during the Sonic Mmabolela residency, November 2018, in Limpopo Province, South Africa. Birds, frogs, snails, people and, especially, cicadas are heard in this soundscape composition.

This recording was made using various input methods simultaneously (hydrophones, a contact mic, audio mics with and without physical filtering). There is a small amount of editing, but the temporal relationship among the channels (which I think of as voices) is maintained throughout.

The Limpopo River forms the majority of the northern border of South Africa. The pool in the picture above is a small eddy off to the southern side of the river, and the site of this recording. The shot was taken from a concrete bridge which carries a small road northward, across the Limpopo to Botswana.

The sounds of drought. The first portion of this recording is from early August when the vegetation was still lush. This was the beginning of a two-month drought the decimated the singing insect populations in the Mid-Atlantic region. The second half of the recording in from later in September after the trees started to shed their leaves from lack of moisture. There had been no cool or cold nights to affect singing insect numbers. This is the sound of drought.
