Joris Voorn returns with another sterling release on his Green label. I Ran The Zoo is a lesson in stripped-back contrast and subtlety, with an acidic groove bleeping away over driving percussion and delicate atmospherics in its Digital Version, the tension growing with every thud of the kick drum. A dizzying breakdown raises the bar with snare rolls and dramatic pads, with the wide-open space therein soon sucked back into the void when the beat drops back in.

Meanwhile the special Analog Version harks back to Joris’ techno sound of old. The throbbing kick and bass and acid blips are set against rising, white-noise drenched synth swells and simple percussion to create something moody and tough yet teasingly pared back.

These two heads-down mixes make this release a stark contrast to some of his more melodic, riff-fuelled releases of late, once again demonstrating Joris' endless versatility and shape-shifting abilities.

Dresdener Jonas Woehl kicks off the fall season by bringing his driven and melancholic style to Simina Grigoriu’s Kuukou imprint for the first time, in the shape of two original tracks and two remixes.

The release opens up with a slow paced, gradually unfolding melody. Lasting is a poised, laid back piece whose dance-inducing groove is fit for the mellower times of a set, ready to wind up the crowd.

Times dives in with a bit more panache, in the same progressively unraveling manner. Using metallic synths and zig-zagging riffs, the artist channels a dark ambient in a highly dynamic composition.

Julian Wassermann swoops in on the remix, turning it into a winding slice of late night Techno that raises pulses and spirits altogether.

Taking on Times, Munich-based Future Proof showcases his remixing chops, having previously released on labels such as Moonboutique, Whatiplay and Bouq. The result is a morphed, jarring rendition of the original, with an emphasis on a bouncy and impetuous bassline.

Premiere: Julian Jeweil - Hyoid [Drumcode]

Hidden Empire is the brainchild of Branko Novakovic and Niklas Schäfers, who describe their musical vision as an 'impulsive, deeply moving soundscape, using the very essential and deepest elements of House and Techno'. Having dropped vital releases on the likes of Stil Vor Talent and Suara in the past couple of years, the boys now release Caterpillar - four tracks of sleek, purpo- seful techno on Oliver Huntemann's ever dependable Senso Sounds label. Lead track 'Caterpillar' is a lean, focussed and deadly example of their craft - synths are laser guided, while the rhythm
is pulsating and hypnotic. Similarly, 'Jack Haze' cuts away all the excess and hones in on a purity of purpose - slick beats and urgent percussion make this a standout cut. '20000V' is cut from
the same cloth, a dance floor-ready destroyer with tonnes of kinetic energy and perfectly pitched dramatic tension. Lastly, 'Tribute' completes the quartet - deep vibes and a wonky off kilter synth line add to the sense of euphoria.
