Up next for Tapes #115 is Xi’an-born and Toronto-based music producer, DJ, pianist, and radio presenter, Ciel. 

She is the creator of Work in Progress, a women-prioritizing concert series in Toronto; a co-founder of the immersive multidisciplinary events platform It’s Not U It’s Me; a co-owner of Toronto electronic music label Parallel Minds; a member of the internationally-renowned women & LGBTQIA+ DJ collective Discwoman; and also produces a monthly radio show on Rinse FM. 

Whether a label boss, grassroots rave promoter, established producer or adventurous DJ, the same strongly-held beliefs shine through everything Cindy does: that of focus on the community, upholding diversity and inclusivity, and playing her part to leave the scene in a better place than when she first entered.

"thanks for letting this mix live on Hue & Saturation : ) about the energy... naturally, since this was for our lesbian ambient night (LAN) the energy was very much in that genre (as in ambient). i remember being pretty emotionally charged this evening and i really wanted to move the set like a mixtape. i also really wanted to touch on a few of the songs (actually two) that have been sitting on my usb that i rarely get the chance to play. one in particular has been a longstanding favourite for nearly a decade now.. others a lil closer to recent years. 

i love @fuzzyamb cause it’s an opportunity to play music you don’t usually get to out and i love KWIA for providing such an inviting space to do so. i’ve heard this same statement from our featured guests so far @roza-terenzi, @ccl-url, and @gabriellekwarteng. the environment is so special, i’m in awe every time."



We’ve been blessed with a recording from one of the Queer Gods themselves, the one and only Jennifer Loveless who’s been traversing dance-floors and homes across the globe for decades, but finally made the Melbourne to Berlin pipeline relocation just last year. 

This recording is taken from Fuzzy, the lesbian ambient night happening at Kwia semi-regularly and who JLO @jenniferloveless is one of the co-mummas of. This mix once again highlights her versatility and ability to encompass a full spectrum of emotions in her sets. A softer, more sentimental side of her lesser seen than her usual all-commanding, club-music dance floor sets, it’s a rollercoaster that is as beautiful as it is deep and driving.

Back on track setting the tone for the new year with the highly anticipated EP "Speed to Burn" by T.E.C. This sonic journey blazes through a spectrum of tempos and moods, delivering five dynamic tracks that navigate effortlessly from floaty downtempo atmospheres to high-octane peak-time bliss.

On the A-side, "Angle Grinder" takes center stage as a club-ready anthem with snappy drums and trippy chords, destined to elevate energy levels. Following suit is "Hi Set & Lo Set," a meditative piece that glides through a serene ambient landscape, offering a mixed excursion of airy textures and subtle dynamics.

Flipping to the B-side, "Myriad" goes off with a trippy, pumping jam that’s as captivating as it is infectious. Next up, "7001 On Plastic" kicks in with a fast-forward techy chugger—a proper peak-time weapon designed to ignite the dance floor. Closing out the EP, "Wasp" delivers a phased-out, downtempo voyage that lures listeners into a hypnotic state with its breezy, introspective flow.

We are incredibly excited to have the amazing Byron Yeates as the 45th mix in our series! 

Byron is a DJ that really needs no introduction. As head of Radiant Records, based in Berlin, Yeates has served his signature sound at Club SMUT, Bassiani, Club Raum, Nowadays and Fold, amongst others. As well as heading up La Noche alongside S-CANDALO (sibling duo THC and DHC), Yeates also holds a bimonthly residency at Berlin's Refuge Radio. 

Yeates' sets, which have been known to span over 8 hours, bounce, tease, punch and often soar. They are inflected with an attitude that can at once be incredibly playful and theatrically sincere, a duality that animates the queer lineage of electronic dance music in which Yeates places himself. The femme vocal is mixed into thumping progressive trance, which in turn meets a throwback house track, or swerves down to the nod of downtempo. What remains consistent through Yeates' selections is a heady depth, keen and delicate melodies, and a forcefulness that never lets surprise step off the dancefloor.
