Koan | ˈkō-än | noun, a paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to   demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment

Jack Shriner is a Seattle-based singer, guitarist, and songwriter. For Crude Koan, his second album under the Frames in Motion moniker, Shriner more than ever before turned to the writing and home recording process as a form of therapy and meditation—a process at turns fruitless and sublime. A mental health therapist by day, the pandemic years he spent crafting the songs for this album were among the most challenging in his—and many of his clients’—lives. Loss of free will and a quest for salvation in the natural world are both themes that permeate the sonic and lyrical landscape. 

A musical omnivore, Shriner writes harmony-rich, tightly-crafted music that merges elements of dream-pop, folk rock, prog, and neo-psychedelia. After playing many years with bassist and backing vocalist Matt Butler and drummer David Solomon, he has recently joined forces with several new collaborators, including Seattle artists Shelley Weiss on violin, Owen Ladner on keyboards, and Sam Veatch on drums.
