Outside traditional paths these driving grooves and polyphonic structures take the adventure seeking dancer to Dionysian highs and places never been before. 

Prince of Morocco sounds from the big city: AkizzBeatzz. The night spirit master is reflecting the power of Gnawa, a cultural and social distinctiveness rooted in West Africa, flourished in Morocco by way of migration, both voluntary and forced.  From Senegal to Chad, from Mali in the North to Nigeria in the South Gnawa population originated from black West Africa. The enslaved people from the old Ghana kingdom (north of Mali), the great market of Djenne, the mystic order which marks exclusiveness, the ancestral memory , the artistic and spiritual parallels with the Bori in Nigeria, the Stambouli in Tunisia, the Sambani in Libya, the Bilali in Algeria, the Vodou in Caribbean….Across the path of the night, there is no doubt that AkizzBeatzz retain the spiritual authority and the source of inspiration that suggests the possibility of redemption for all sufferers.

Naive Is Bliss

Our Youth was recorded in April of 2020, written and arranged over 3 weeks in Melbourne, Australia. The concept of the album delves deep into the broken structures of todays society. The opening track Beloved, a love dedication and closing track  The Laughing Heart, shine the light of hope, bookending the album. Pillar tracks  “Youth” and “This World” head the theme of protest through out the album, brought to life with lyrics “We are alone, We are sold, Never break apart” on Youth. 

The Album is made with the intention to be of service in the wild and underpredicatble times we live in. May it open your heart, hold you when life feels grim and catapult you into the new paradigm.

The artwork is by @kitscheart. I wanted the art represent mother earth in her beauty, but also helpless, as her creation trampled on by privilege. This piece fit that intention perfectly.

Anka Foh is made up of multi-talented Malian singer/composer/songwriter and producer Dasmy Djo and French electronic music producer/DJ/composer and Curuba label head Ditti. The duo met at a series of culture mashing jam sessions between musicians from all over the world in Paris’ underground bars. The two artists clicked and came together to work on some of Dasmy’s compositions - within a few months they formed Anka Foh.

Shika Shika is excited to share their first EP, Kounady, four tracks of much needed upbeat, joyful, soul music that finds a magical sweet spot between Dasmy’s original compositions, inspired by Mandingue traditional music, and Ditti’s jubilant electronica.

Though the fours compositions are rooted in the West African mandingue tradition, they are taken into a whole new context. Dasmy’s vocals and instrumental lines sit alongside swirling, airy melodies, swaggering beats and Ditti’s trademark bleeps and psychedelic, dreamy synths - the recipe for an explosion of delicious flavours and colours.

This is summed up on opener Bara or the driving electro-blues track Tâtâ, a song about giving thanks to those that helped and supported us in our lives. The EP ends with the fittingly beautiful lullaby Kounady (a mandingue word that roughly translates as luck) about how we have to look after ourselves and avoid negativity.

On this celebration of borderless music, Anka Foh have created an uplifting and refreshing debut. Music that somehow combines the dancefloor, douceur (sweetness) and melancholy but, most of all, a big dose of fun.
