Presented as part of the fourth instalment of the Nomadic Signals series by Leyya Tawil, ISSUE Project Room’s 2020 Suzanne Fiol Curatorial Fellow. A vessel for performance operating in what Tawil refers to as the “diasporic imaginary”, this programme of sonic and visual illusory spaces explores how sounds change in the diaspora; how they tether to their environment, accumulate, synthesise, adapt.

The film will be exhibited in the Medieval Undercroft at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum for the duration of the Coventry Biennial taking place from 6th October, 2021 until 8th February, 2022.

A multitude of processes, techniques, and forms unfold and unfurl within the work of Méryll Ampe,
an intermedia artist from Paris working through sound, sculpture, and installation using a wide assortment
of materials. What is immediately striking about Ampe’s work is the vibrant, non-linear approach to
electro-acoustic composition.
Here on the debut for Misanthropic Agenda, Ampe liberally reconfigures / deconstructs / genetically mutates
all sources: hydrophone recordings of vibrations through skin, analog synths, tape machinations,
sequencing programmed through algorithmic variability, and plenty of digital processing.
As Ampe describes it, the music on W7E is "a research with an experimental dimension, guided by notions that
systematically translate a form of ambivalence, between inside/outside, micro/macro. These intentions are
vectors of the dynamics, reliefs, depths and rhythm. My training as a visual artist also leads me to go through
mental images (such as a steep landscape, a boiling organism, an organic matter) which will then find a
sound form, states that I would describe as syncope, sound effluvia, abrasive arrhythmias. I look for a form of
plasticity in the sound medium, and that this energy become a living matter."
This multi-dimensional overlay through composition telescopes in and out of the body (not necessarily always
a human body, it should be noted), through a connectivity with technology that can influence psychological states
of being. The work addresses liminality, transitory slippages, and quantum theories of a particle being the two
separate places at the same time. If that can occur at the atomic level, why not through sound?
W7E stands as a dynamic, polydactyl album reflective of the aesthetics (if not concepts) of Keith Fullerton Whitman,
Francisco Meirino, and Bernard Parmegiani.

在數位影像當中，我們透過認知上的投射，來獲得對此影像的認知，而這些數位影像在電腦當中的認知卻只是像素上的座標，當我們透過AI電腦算圖時，我們獲得一張我們悉知的圖像，但圖像中卻又常帶有許多不協調感，而透過大量AI圖像的演化生成與聲響的引導，探討視覺經驗在當前人類社會為何。

In digital graphics, people's recognition of the image is obtained through cognitive projection. However, the digital representation of these graphics in computers is only based on pixel coordinates. When we use AI computers to generate these graphics, we obtain an image that we are familiar with, but the image often carries a sense of dissonance. Through the evolution of a large number of AI-generated images and guided by sound, this work explores the current human experience of visual perception in society.

J'emprunte ce titre "Immemorial Echoes" au livre du philosophe Bernard Baas "L'écho de l'immémorial" paru en 2016 aux éditions Hermann. 

J'ai réalisé Immemorial Echoes suite à une commande de @Radiophrenia Glasgow. Cette composition contient des enregistrements que j'ai fait à Aït Saïd dit Mayache, un petit village de Kabylie au nord de l’Algérie, en avril 2023 et des sonorités issues de synthèse avec mes machines. 

La composition musicale se présente comme l’espace de rencontre entre d’une part, le présent vivant qui m’entoure : ces voix que l’on entend sont celles de ma grand-mère Wardia et de son amie Aljia mais aussi d’un groupe de chanteuses traditionnelles appelées Medehates – chanteuses de louanges - invoquant la pluie en cette saison de printemps caniculaire, on entend aussi un passage d’instrumentation traditionnelle jouée par un groupe de percussionniste et de flûtiste, les Idebalen. D’autre part, les intensités vocales que je porte en moi, à même mon corps et qui s’expriment dans l’interaction avec mes machines. Ces deux pratiques à savoir l’enregistrement de terrain et l’improvisation électroacoustique se rejoignent et fusionnent dans une troisième pratique qu’est le montage compositionnel. Cette pièce est une tentative d’un dépassement des dualismes entre des écoutes morphologiques ou représentationnelles, elle prône une écoute fabulatrice et qui aurait à voir avec l’évocation d’un immémorial. Par-là, l’écoute devient une pratique existentielle accompagnée par une activité créatrice. Cette éthique de l’existence forme un matrimoine sonore, c’est la somme des éléments intérieurs et extérieurs qui résonnent ou expriment un silence amplifié, transmis à même le corps et dont l’une des expressions possibles est le cri. Dans cette écoute, signifiant et signifié, abstrait et concret, forme et matière se mettent en mouvement et s’inter-déterminent.

I borrow this title "Immemorial Echoes" from philosopher Bernard Baas's book "L'écho de l'immémorial" published in 2016 by Hermann.

What I call my sound matrimony is the sum of the inner and the outer elements that I hear and listen to when improvising with my machine and recording phonographies. It’s a magma of noises, concrete sounds, voices, languages, poetry, riddles, screams and, sometimes creepy stories. The composition came to me as the place where I could share the ghosts in me and the vivifiant present around me, going through a montage of phonographies and a deconstruction of the dualism in between which is a morphological listenning and a representational listenning.

This piece was commissioned by @Radiophrenia. Most of the speech and human voices arise from wonderful women, some of whom are my grandmother Wardia and her friend Haljia, but also a group of women called “Medahates” whose singing voices can be heard invoking the rain with traditional prayers because of this horrible spring canicule. All these voices were recorded by myself in April 2023 in Mayache, a little Mediterranean village in the countryside of Tigzirt in the wilaya of Tizi-Ouzou in the north of this very special and plural country – both beautiful and tragic – that I was born in: Algeria. The composition was made in my studio at Pantin, France.

Immemorial Echoes - Radiophrenia Production Commission 2023

The intricate sonic activity behind 'Live at default' testifies to Francesco Corvi's recent post-acousmatic practice. Intense multi-layered textures and rich synthetic soundscapes are fused with micro-sounds. Highly detailed digital noise is made warm and enchanting by the live performance and ambience recordings, and reaches its best character on magnetic tape.

"In my practice software is not conceived as an instrument, neither as a virtual agent, but rather as a dynamic network of interconnected components that exhibit emergent properties by monitoring their own behavior, adapt to changes and alter their own structure. Immersed in this ecosystem of sonic processes, I shape the unfolding of the performance by modifying the software on stage and responding to its behavior. This peculiar form of improvisation possesses a unique performative idiom that cannot be reduced to bodily gestures or human intentions, as the sonic activity itself becomes the medium for conveying the liveness of the performance. This release focuses on how such a feeling of liveness might be translated into a record, placing particular attention on the capturing of the acoustic space of the concert hall and the additional layer of meaning it creates."

Francesco Corvi (aka nesso) is a performer, composer, and multimedia artist. He works with custom digital technologies including live coding environments, adaptive systems, and spatial audio engines,
creating shows at the intersection of computer music, new media art, and deconstructed club. He released music on Superpang, Kaer'Uiks, Genot Centre, HEEL.ZONE, Mossa records, Riforma.
