The third release of SHIFT Digital Audio comes from Varlamis. Born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece, and educated in the U.K., he is now based in the United States, where he has built his own analog studio.

Gentle chord progressions smoothly build up the atmosphere on 'Purple Tahoe.' Tight breaks from the drum machine add an energetic groove that makes the track work on any kind of dance-floor.

'S.V.' presents a seamless interlacement of harmonic chords and rolling drums, which creates a bold modulation and evokes the feeling of pure analog sound. Rhythmic claps and crisp hi-hats establish a swift pace, while the underlying bassline completes the resonant foundation of the track.

Distorted synths and synthesized organic sounds form the core of 'Morse.' A creeping melody permeates the track, leading both the music and its listener to unknown places. The sweeping arpeggiator adds some flavor and accentuates this exploratory desire.

Sharp percussion overlays the melodic bassline in 'STE 013.' The magic of spontaneity is exemplified on this track - simply press 'Record' and let the music flow. The resulting product is an undiluted gem that stems directly from feelings of pure joy and fulfillment.

Overarching synths lead the final track, as ambient white noise fills in the gaps. The heavy kick drum and arpeggiating bass provide a resounding and complementary framework for the remaining sonic elements.

Gem Records is back with a string of releases planned after a two month silence from the Dutch record label run by Secret Cinema. They start with a release by the Berlin based brothers from Japan: SUDO. 

Isao and Takashi Sudo are known for their energetic techno in the studio as well as on stage with releases on labels such as SCI+TEC. They deliver a strong 2 track EP with the massive A-side ‘Seventh’. The track has been tearing down roofs everywhere Secret Cinema plays with its driving groove, melodic break and frantic drop. Must hear!

B-side ‘Neu’ is a typical Gem with its melodic yet powerful sound. A simple setup, the song is built up of a piano lead, sawtooth bass line and a thumping groove that just keeps going. 

Those who follow Gem closely will notice that their latest release proudly ushers in new artwork designed by Josaiah Chong. The artwork tries to convey the colourful nature of Gem Records with its wide range of music with which it aspires to steer clear of the sound of the moment and present a more timeless alternative that still does its job on the main stage. 

Many releases are lined up on Gem Records for the second half of 2018 from the likes of Egbert, Ferdinand Dreyssig, VNTM and the long awaited follow up to Seance by label boss Secret Cinema. Stay tuned...

When was the last time you felt your feet lift off the ground?

SHIFT Digital Audio is a pioneering music label that distributes techno music written and produced by emerging artists. We release music that fills the missing void in today's electronic music landscape, or as we call it, SHIFTed frequencies.

The root of our concept stems from an idea that was born behind the scenes. As newcomers we were given a respectable amount of exposure in the foreground of the industry, and now our intentions are to complete that circle – by promoting new artists and always striving to further the evolution of techno. We will never neglect what’s happened in the past two decades, but our aim is to have one eye on the future so we can continue to drive the scene forward. 

Our catalogue will be updated with releases and podcasts from artists who are well versed on the virtues of our scene.
