About Light Leaks:
This is the first installment of Slow Change Ambient Sessions, which I hope to continue on a more or less yearly basis in the future.
My focus in composing these tracks was on creating multiple loops of varying lengths and letting them evolve generatively over time to form slowly modulating layers of sound. As such, this album leans more towards the meditative and calming side of ambient. When I'm not listening to other people's music, these are the kinds of compositions that I set in motion when I want a soundtrack to work, read, or think to at home, and I thought that some of you might enjoy them as well. I certainly hope that that is the case and that listeners will feel just a little more relaxed and happier about being in the world.

ALEXANDRE BAZIN​ is a member of the ​Groupe de Recherches Musicales​, better known as the GRM, for which he writes documentaries about music for the radio. He is passionate about experimental music and more specifically acousmatic music created by members of the GRM, such as Bernard Parmegiani, Francois Bayle and Guy Reibel. Due to his background as a classical and jazz pianist, Alexandre Bazin is also passionate about instrumental music by the likes of Steve Reich, Erik Satie, Brian Eno ... This album attempts to synthesize these two worlds that are so dear to the composer, either in symbiosis or in opposition to one another with simple and loose melodies as its main theme. The use of analog synthesizers and acoustic sounds are at the heart of the composer's creative process. His music has already been heard thanks to Umor Rex Records in Mexico and the Moogfest festival in the USA.

OCEANS :

"Oceans" ​was written for Marimba, Piano and Buchla Music Easel, in 4 movements around the theme of the Ocean. Simple and loose melodies, played on piano and Buchla. They rotate around the marimba which evokes breathing and the rhythm of the swell. Suspended melodies reminiscent of Generative music although in this case they are an improvisation around a simple motif. Through its title and movements, this work evokes a reflection around climate change and our relationship to Oceans: water, breathing, the repetition of movement, but also its immensity which reminds us of our limits. The piece was performed by Alexandre Bazin on Piano, Buchla Music Easel and Marimba as well as Gabriel Benlolo on Marimba, a member of the Radio France Philharmonic orchestra.

Prairie is the project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Marc Jacobs, hailing from Brussels with roots in The Netherlands. On stage, Prairie plays with two or three musicians and together they re-create a free association of musical ideas and atmospheres. Prairie has played in selected venues and festivals across Europe  and for instance toured with Apparat.

“And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me” is the second full length album on Denovali Records.

This album was inspired by the silence of the birds, by the tone between a mother and her daughter, by the Sandsnipe twins, by constant wailing sirens, by the memory of a Vangelis track. Composed in the city, in his studio Les Lacs and in the mountains of the French Cévennes, Jacobs integrates his various recording locations into his magnificent sound design. By using various recording techniques, analog gear, guitar pedals, synths, amps and human voices, “And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me” creates a fountain of sound layers which coalesce to synthetic and noise infused manipulations, dramatic crescendos and subtle field recordings.

Jacobs focuses on melodies, sometimes hidden melodies, or straight out melodies that took him back to various musical influences, current ones but also from his past, lurking into pop and loving imperfection. The lyrics of "Cut me Open" are the spine of the record, the scenario where various species of birds lead the way, and where each track is a short chapter of the flight.

Jacobs once again showcases a deep sensitivity to narrative and rich cinematic textures by creating a technicolor soundtrack.

MANSUR is the newly initiated project by Jason Kohnen (ex-The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble) joined by Dimitry El-Demerdashi (ex-Phurpa) and introducing Martina Hórvath on vocals. The sound of MANSUR navigates between the waters of musical fantasy and reality - it morphs and blends traditional instrumentation with modern day electronica.

Horváth, El-Demerdashi and Köhnen return to their otherworldly worldbuilding with their debut album ‘Karma’ on Denovali. MANSUR leads the listener into mystical and magical unknowns, that lie far past the realms of material perception.

As astronomer Carl Saga once wrote “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known”.  Universal lessons of life, brought by teachings and teachers of ages. Unimaginary worlds in all our capacities of being created.  MANSUR is the transformational vessel guiding you to these non-physical realms. The realms you seek are already there, its up to you to find them.

Karma

Mansur - Memento Mori

I nodded ascent and began to stare. Of course, I did. I always followed Grandfather’s instructions. As did almost everybody else. 

I concentrated on the flame. Grandfather spoke, but what, I cannot remember. Then I heard him move. He stopped, spoke again, and walked slowly on. Now I lost track of him, lost to the flame. The flickering grew brighter and brighter, the darkness around me swelled. Suddenly, I was aware that the blackness held within it colours that changed in waves. But still I stared. And then I could smell…Grandmother’s perfume, a bonfire of leaves, then new-mown grass, freshly fallen snow…. I tried desperately hard to remember them all, I knew that this was something Grandfather would want to know. 

I awoke sometime later. Grandfather had draped a travel blanket across my shoulders. It was warm and tickly. When he saw me stir, he got up from his chair by the dying fire. “Bed, I think, yes?” 

As he tucked me in, I told him of the colours (gold, blue, red, and green) and the smells, although by then I couldn’t be certain of any. He smiled. “Good.” 

In the doorway, he stopped, silhouetted against the landing light. “Next time, no candle. You are ready to see.” 

He was right. I did. I still see them now.
