Fundamentally delicate and yet insistently, breathtakingly complete, Hatami’s keen ear for microscopic levels of sonic detail allows the album as a whole to sketch a wide-screen vision of nature at work. 

Thematically profound and tonally complex, the music charts a course through a fragile natural world, constructing an exquisitely intricate tone poem from the manifold sounds of the earth and its transitory inhabitants.

SHM Podcast #37: Aleks

I composed this album "nostalghia" after being inspired by several transparency films my grandmother had left me. The films were taken in 1967 during her travels in Britain, France, Italy, Denmark, Germany, the Soviet Union, USA and so on. She had rarely told me about her travels, (I am not sure why), except for a few funny stories. Nostalghia is the process of my efforts through composition in approaching a memory embraced in those film. The image of this album was designed by my partner Natsuko Yanagimoto (a vocalist of "Rimacona", she is also a photo-based artist). She designs with an unique method; scanning the films, printing them on cloths or papers, sewing them and re-scanning.

Awareness XXII: Ben Buitendijk

London-born, LA-based Ryan Griffin began @astrangelyisolatedplace a decade ago as a manifestation of his love for collecting and sharing music. The project soon grew into a vinyl label and a community of artists sharing a reverence for a diverse and esoteric range of genres, from ambient to electronica, modern classical to techno. Artists releasing on the label currently include Merrin Karras aka @chymera, Arovane (@arovane-1), Leandro Fresco & Rafael Anton Irisarri (@irisarri), @purl, and @markusguentner.

This atmospheric selection incorporates into A Strangely Isolated Place's signature sound additional elements of the trance and house music genres on which Ryan cut his DJing teeth. An organic approach to selection and mixing ensures a richly layered collage that manages to take some startling turns while remaining effortlessly cohesive throughout.

The goal of this feature and accompanying mix was to create a journey of escapism and comfort. Whereas the previous Portals feature, ‘Music For Sleeping’ could be deemed very similar, the approach here focused on keeping an attentive layer/s that ended up being more pure to Brian Eno’s definition of ambient music: “As ignorable as it is interesting”, which actually aligns very well with the definition of what it means to be mindful; "the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something”.

Pascal Savy is a French musician who lives and works in London. He creates organic ambient and drone music as a way to reflect on erosion, transition and decay. He utilizes tones, textures, micro-melodies and noise to explore atmospheres rather than narratives. His work often combines acoustic and electronic sources generated from field-recordings, pick-ups, tape loops, feedback, synthesisers or home made electronics which he transforms into dense and layered motifs. His works has been released on Hibernate, Feedback Loop Label & Twisted Tree Lines.

"Adrift is conceived as a sound exploration of a sea area in close proximity of the fictional island of Eilean. The land itself haunts the music as a spectral presence exerting a pull on the narrative and is occasionally seen through a thick veil of mist and fog. The eight tracks on the album works as a series of discrete but related mythical seascapes, each evoking in their own way the elusiveness and foreboding nature of this space."

isolatedmix 79 - Autumn Of Communion

Glåsbird returns following the debut EP ‘Drift Stations’ which was a digital only release on Whitelabrecs just prior to Christmas last year. The eagerly awaited full-length debut album is something that this currently anonymous artist has carefully shaped over a lengthy period of time and it is entitled Grønland. Those looking to the themes of the North Pole and travel through the treacherous Arctic Circle which were contained within Drift Stations, will see a pattern of travel or rather, migration developing. Next stop – Greenland, the world’s largest island as well as one of the most uninhabited landmasses on the planet, which is thanks to stark temperatures and the permanent ice sheet which occupies most of this land.

Glåsbird imagined that they were assigned the task of scoring the soundtrack to a film about Greenland and spent a great deal of time researching the subject. Hours of documentaries, drone helicopter footage, NASA and satellite images, Instagram traveller accounts, 360° photos, web articles and maps were surveyed, to the point where this artist felt sufficiently immersed in this sub-zero but beautiful land. One such traveller/photographer who has physically witnessed the splendour of Greenland is Lennart Pagel, who kindly provided the cover image; the shot not only captures the essence of this country with its iced mountains, freezing lake and primary-coloured cabin but also there is a bold starkness which lends itself to this soundtrack.

Two releases in and whilst we’re no clearer as to who is behind this project, it is clear that Glåsbird is becoming synonymous with storytelling and specifically travel or migration, if you prefer.
The music itself adopts a Modern Classical approach with icy piano shards shimmering alongside glacial violin and cello drones as well as the occasional hint of grounding electric guitar. We’re told that the artist even recorded some sections of sounds to cassette before placing the tape in the freezer to give an added chill factor.

Harold runs Australian label and mix series Steeplejack. After a string of wicked releases, Steeplejack recently announced their debut LP, put together by Glome. 'Popular Moments For You And I' will be released later this month and we highly recommend you check it out.

Marie Wilhelmine Anders is a wanderer in music.

Since she was 5 years old, she has had violin and music theory lessons. But it was the piano that had to come into the house. For three years she taught herself and invented music whenever she came along. Her wish to study composition was fulfilled at the University Of The Arts Berlin, but only after a excursion into sound engineering, the East Berlin underground music scene (as a keyboarder) and drum playing. Her versatility was probably as much a part of her cradle as her enormous musical talent. She made excursions into sound art (sound installations in Berlin and Nuertingen) and could not be satisfied with writing a score. She therefore completed her music studies in Stuttgart, where she was able to realise her great talent for musical improvisation, her joy of movement and the desire to become a music teacher.

During this time, in addition to her solo activities as an improvisor (piano and electronics), she founded two ensembles - Unterton and Hammerhaus - which brought together groove and free-flowing improvised forms from different perspectives. She initiated and directed "momentmusik" - a "concert series for experimental and improvised music, visual arts, performance and language" at the "Theater Rampe Stuttgart", which established the connection between her ensembles and the national and international scene.

In 2005 she ended her concert activity and moved back to Berlin. She learned to play the electric bass, began producing her music with Cubase and publishing it under the pseudonym Marie Wilhelmine Anders.

She discovered the poems of Robert Louis Stevenson and began to develop her new electronic musical language along his verses. Marie's conceptual thinking and her craft as a modern classical composer allow her to congenially translate his lyrics into a modern electronic language, which is influenced by techno and electronica. She has released three albums since then. Particularly noteworthy among them are the 2020 releases on the Munich record label Broque: "Andersworld" and the recently released "Andersworld Remixes".



Her best friend writes:

"Marie works her way out of all restrictions and experiments with styles and musical directions. Whereby she adapts formal means and creates something very own. As always, I am impressed by her accuracy in everything she does. Marie is the secret phoenix among my friends, who puts on a new and even more splendid plumage after each ashes. I have great admiration for their consistency, uncompromisingness, unconditional honesty, absolute fidelity and loyalty. One speaks of the phoenix as an eternally youthful bird. And he can fly anyway. Only that it cannot be seen by everyone. But times are changing."

2021 is coming in hot with Xique-Xique's Remix package of @noema's „Twilight“! In his remixes, Xique-Xique (@djdunwich) creates a psychedelic trip using warm subbass, driving percussions, dubby effects and gritty synth sprinkles. We fought in the format wars wielding consumer level melody and parking lot chords tuned to bird scale and after school static. 
We knew that nothing would ever happen and that we were never here. Our lives are not events. We are the eternal moments of isolated reveries and home video laments. 
We are 3:30pm. We are the hot strawberry table outside the Dairy Queen and that pack of matches we keep from that gas station in Oregon. 
We are these songs. 
What do they say? 
They tell us that once before we were the whole of the river but now we are just jewel toned drops pouring out alone over the cliff's edge. 
They walk with us to the ocean's mirror to practice our speeches but they know that on our way home we will speak only to ourselves. 
Nostalgia is cheap but elegy is necessary and these tracks are written as a ceremony for our wounded present using the forgotten past. 
Will you remember us when we are the river again?
