Darren Harper [b.1970] is an American experimental/ambient sound artist residing high within the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. 
Drawing from both electronic and acoustic sources, his compositional output is based entirely on experimentation and improvisation, with a strong emphasis on minimalism, and often reflects a desire for a greater understanding of nature and self, and the relationship therein. 
Darren has released works on several international labels, including Shimmering Moods, Dronarivm, Flaming Pines, Analogpath, Rural Colours, Soft Recordings, Disq AN, Audio Gourmet, and Twice Removed, as well as several compilations, netlabel and self-released projects.

Anthéne is the music of Bradley Sean Alexander Deschamps. He is based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and also curates the Polar Seas Recordings label. His compositions are primarily created using electric guitar and synthesizers, with field recordings and occasional acoustic instruments. Over the past few years his music has been released on Home Normal, Constellation Tatsu, Past Inside the Present, among other labels.

Grand River mixes One Instrument

This week, we have received a 2h IDM and electronica set from Ingo Zobel. This computer freak recently released music on the labels Touched Music, Touched Electronix, Furthur Electronix, Mighty Force, Moatun7, Intellitronic Bubble, Neotantra, Neo Ouija, Fantasy Enhancing as well as DIN and Carpe Sonum. 

He started Djing in the late eighties. Between 1996 and 1998 he organised underground parties with some close friends, were he played IDM, Braindance, Electro, Breakbeat, Acid House and Techno.

In 1997 he founded the band "Drøn" with his friends Christoph Abert and Frederik Dahlke, which is his main music project since then, and is all about electronica and ambient. He also releases solo under the name Self Oscillate.

He is also a vinyl addict and like to discuss a lot of his music taste and new releases, and this set shares some of his findings! Enjoy!

Qui Danse Sur Du Verre ?

Mysteries of the Deep has released its third and final compilation, rounding out the three-part seasonal series that began earlier this year. Each has been distinct and reflective of the season of its release; the first, released in spring, leaned towards the organic and ethereal. The second—a summer release—was oriented towards rhythmic vitality. And the third installment in the series, like the winter season, is deep, dark, and contemplative: a call to turn inwards. The thread that connects each track in Chapter Three is mood: each one of these tracks brings to mind the inward spaces of winter. From the smoky, ghost-like vocals of Xexyz’s “Lost” to the percussive fervor of Birds of Prey’s “Escapement,” this compilation offers a dynamic range of sounds, while remaining sonically coherent.

Thomas Ragsdale’s “Kicking Ox” makes for a fitting opening, for its dark pulse and somber strings set the tone for what’s to follow. Much of this work seems to reflect the end of a long, chaotic year; often these arrangements are stark, unsettling and dystopian, like Push for Night’s tense, cinematic “Fingering the Fuse” and Israel Vines’ “Shallow Pursuits.” Elements like the ragged chords of Rafael Anton Irisarri’s “Haggard,” the steady, buried kick in Christina Giannone’s “Lapsed Contentment” or the sonic droplets of Radere’s “Harm Matrix,” lend to a sparse, wintry atmosphere. But, as within any bleak, snowy landscape, there’s the occasional sheen of light. Joachim Spieth’s “Luna,” and Rhaeticus’ “Standing on Concrete” are heightened and emotionally rich. Overall, the third and final release grounds itself in an identity that feels distinctly different from the first two chapters, and yet simultaneously completes the arc of the series, which has showcased over three dozen artists dedicated to their craft.

For our last POOLcast episode in 2020 we have another very special piece for you. We have spared no expense and effort to present you an improvised and live session of PLO.

Our new POOL studio allowed us to have a meeting of four PLO musicians in late summer under strict hygienic measures and since it is difficult especially for PLO to appear in the given times, we are even more pleased to end the year with one of their lively and unpredictable recordings. This time Demas, ANN, Walboot aka gnilyf and The Artist Formerly Known As From Karaoke To Stardom got together with their electronic keyboards, modular synthesizers and laptops. The result is a mix of jazz, dub, ambient, drone and musique concrete. Just the right thing to give your mind some headspace before the holidays. 

We wish everyone the best, health and strength, and a happy, hopeful new year to all.
