Acid Arab 'Zhar'

Having shared stages with names like Bonobo, Aim, The Bays and Giles Peterson it’s about time Outlook got this interesting Scottish Band down.
Combing jazz with cinematic emotions the four piece band draw influence from Radiohead, Madlib, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher. As well as two live drummers the band trigger live samples and use live instrumentation on Cello and Brass. Their debut album ‘Night Walks’ was funded by the Scottish Arts Council and features guest appearances from distinguished Scottish musicians. Released on Brighton based label Tru Thoughts, ‘Night Walks’ shows off energetic originality unlike any other band.

Mungo’s Hi Fi held a recording session with Sugar Minott in Glasgow in 2009, not knowing that he would sadly pass away six months later. This record features his raggamuffin vocal which has been complemented with Daddy Freddy at his growling best, which he was proud to record alongside his friend and mentor. 
The 12” features on one side Mungo’s Hi Fi’s original dubby smasher, which has been one of their most requested tracks since they started playing it out on dubplate. The other side is their first collaboration with Chimpo, who has pulled out all the stops to take the homage to Zinc’s Super Sharp Shooter to the next level. You need this record.

I have always been almost obsessed with the concept of time. In recent years I am investigating and attending the world of meditation, and – about a year ago – I started to practice it regularly twice a day. While meditating we get into a very different dimension where feeling of time ceases to exit, when we are deeply into meditation we move away from the concept of time… Tracks presented here are not drones in the classical sense, as conceived by La Monte Young as having no beginning and no end, but for me they represent a possible soundtrack to the daily journey from matter to transcendence.

We’re pleased to announce the first track from our new album  ‘The Exquisite Corpse’, created in collaboration with artists from one of our favourite record labels ‘Moderna Records’ and based on the surrealist game.

Taking Leah Kardos ‘Little Phase’ from our Summer Compilation as its starting point, the piece will be reworked by a series of composers and producers to create an album of tracks which continually evolve as each new version is passed from one artist to another, adding to and transforming material from the original piece. We’ll be releasing a new track from the album every 2-3 weeks so keep an eye on our social media for updates!

Imagine stepping into a bumping dance party at the peak of the night and feeling the movement of the dancers around you; take a psychedelic walk through the Malian desert with a boom box, or meditate on some modern dub as the night winds down. Afrolicious brings musical treats for you to feed your mind, body and soul which mixes a love of dj and dance culture along with a passion for organic soulful live music from around the world. With their first official release "A Dub for Mali" they have created a recipe that will satisfy diverse musical palettes, with elements of Afro-Beat and Disco brought together for 'Thursday Night Kinda Swing', Electro-Dub, reggae and down-tempo on the title track 'Foolin' and a funky mix of Malian blues, psychedelia and beats on 'A Dub for Mali' the ep is a reflection and a taste of the wide spectrum of sounds that have been cultivated weekly at the San Francisco based Afrolicious party, hosted by real life brothers Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz.Afrolicious' debut features some outstanding vocal performances from Burkina Faso's Yacouba Diara and Trinidad's Fresh is Life; locked in percussion and scatting vocals of Baba Duru,tight horn work of Billy Magic and Aaron Lebowitz and the wicked slide guitar, funky bass and arrangements of Joey "Pleasuremaker" McGuire.Produced by Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation the tracks were recorded in an improvisational atmosphere that helped capture the magic of the Afrolicious party environment, a place where magic might happen if you give it a chance.The vibe of the Afrolicious party and the years of working with outstanding musicians, vocalists and djs in clubs all over are captured on this release.



THURSDAY NIGHT KINDA SWING

On "California Dreaming" Afrolicious combine soulful vocals, infectious hooks, funky bass lines, energetic horns and tight beats, while retaining the soul and feel of classic funk, disco, Latin, Tropical and Afrobeat recordings. These are songs you can dance to at the club but will still want to listen to in your house or car. The album's title refers to the current state of the California dream and questions the reality, illusion and the fine line between them for people who are searching for their dreams in California and beyond.


The musicians that make up the Afrolicious collective come from a wide spectrum of places and reflect the diverse make up of California. Vocalist and percussionist Baba Duru was in the original Headhunters and recorded on the classic B-Boy anthem “God Made Me Funky”. Freshislife who sings lead on several of the tracks on ‘California Dreaming’ was originally a star Calypso dancer in Trinidad and Tobago before relocating to San Francisco. Many of the artists on the record met at the weekly Afrolicious party at the legendary Elbo Room in San Francisco. Founded in 2006 by real life brothers Joe and Oz McGuire, aka DJs Pleasuremaker and Señor Oz the weekly party became a place to collaborate with other musicians and DJs and the dancefloor became a testing ground for original compositions and musical collaborations.

Afrolicious released two EPs of original music produced by Rob Garza of Thievery Corporation on their imprint label ESL Music. The EPs and their remix work together garnered critical acclaim, radio and club support from top DJs and tastemakers which has created excitement for their first proper album.
