Il y a toujours eu un piano à la maison. Mon oncle Pascal en jouait parfois, ma mère à de rares occasions. Moi je n'ai jamais "appris", mais j'écoutais, m'aventurais parfois à pianoter quelques notes… Ce que j'ai continué à faire jusqu'à aujourd'hui, écouter beaucoup, pianoter un peu. Il y a toujours un piano ici qui ne sert pas beaucoup, avec sous chaque touche cette sorte d'émotion latente, particulière, au potentiel immense, qui ne demande qu'à être activée par un toucher sensible. Et cela tout le monde en est capable, musicien-ne ou pas. D'où cette idée de faire un mix spécial Piano Day, avec un maximum de contributions originales enregistrées pour l'occasion. J'ai lancé des invitations à participer, trouvé un bon micro à prêter - merci Yvan! - et enregistré quelques beaux moments, la plupart improvisés (ou presque). Parmi les participant-e-s, il y a des ami-e-s dont la musique n'est pas forcément la pratique principale (ou le piano pas forcément l'instrument de prédilection) et d'autres que je ne connais pas mais dont la musique m'a touché lors de mes pérégrinations internautiques... Mélancolie douce XXVIII (Spéciale Piano Day)

Live performance as part of TIME AS A SONIC GESTURE - a durational concert for headphones by Jacqui O'Reilly.

The very start of the recording features a live variation on first track (The Frequency of a Leaf) off my forthcoming album.

From Jacqui "The concept for Time as a Sonic Gesture, emerged in response to Katelyn Geard’s work, I Have Something to Say, (exhibited in GRAPHITE, at DRAW Space, April 2024). This work was described as a drawing ‘soft as a whisper’ in its reach beyond two dimensions.  Time as a Sonic Gesture plays with this notion of persistence of vision, to instantiate time as a trans-disciplinary gesture of collective presence in the making and sharing of art. Throughout the evening local guests artists Laura Altman and Alexandra Spence will improvise with O’Reilly and play solo, to unfold an experimental and immersive soundscape performance."

Disquiet Junto Project 0704: Right on Cumulus
The Assignment: Compose 8-bit music inspired by a Cory Arcangel / Super Mario video.

In 2002, the media artist Cory Arcangel created a work of art titled Super Mario Clouds, which removed everything from the 1985 Super Mario Bros. video game except the blue sky and passing clouds. This means that Arcangel’s video was silent, because also excluded was Koji Kondo’s classic score.

The asignment is to record a very sedate 8-bit music that does feel aligned with Super Mario Clouds. So while listening please watch the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCmAD0TwGcQ).

Mario Clouds [disquiet0704]

This is a recording of what we believe is a culverted stream below Fallenbrunnen in Friedrichshafen. We noticed this almost as soon as we arrived there, the night before we played at VOD-Festival (19 July 2025), right across the street from Kulturhaus Caserne, the festival venue. The recording was incorporated into the live show, a hidden sound from somewhere almost beneath our feet as we played.

The last place

Jason van Wyk is a Cape Town (South Africa) based electronic music producer whose music I often wish could have been my own. From cinematic soundscapes to soft piano keys and mesmerising passages, the elements of his pieces are all the necessary ingredients that I often try to combine in my music. And that is basically the highest sort of praise that I could give. There are many incredible ambient musicians who truly inspire me with their ability to create and transport me to their fantastic sonic worlds. And plenty have contributed to my growth as a musician - I am permanently indebted to many of them, whom I am honoured to call friends. But in my soul, I am a pianist, and the instrument [or its echoes] inevitably make it into my tracks. And this is what I love about Jason's music. His most recent release on the beloved n5MD, Inherent, is a more upbeat, forward-driven progression, combining his skills of crafting dance-oriented grooves with atmospheric soundtracks. For his upcoming EP, Jason reworked three tracks into pure ambient pieces. To truly appreciate the transformation, start by hearing the original track, followed by this alternative version. If you want to dig deeper into the process behind the composition (including the details of the actual effects chain used, like the Space Echo, etc.), you can read up on Headphone Community, where Jason revealed it all when he was a featured artist for the entire month of July [the content is still up there!].
