José Soberanes (Tula de Allende,Hidalgo (MX); 1983) An artist inspired in experiences with people, college life, film scores or just listening to random sounds. He has developed a trajectory within experimental and alternative electronic music since 2012, publishing a bunch of albums, ep's and singles on many labels around the globe and performed series of concerts and collaborations with several artists as well . 

Currently mixing digital & analogue, both instruments and resources on his sound works, focusing on minimalism, singularity of field recordings & improvisation; as a main tool. No studies, no academic education, no scholarships, pure learning by doing self-taught appropriations of his creative skills.

He's the current founder and label manager of Nova Fund recordings and partner in crime with Mauricio Sotelo on We Only Share (WOS) label, also they project  called “Particle Assault”. 
As an artist he appears on:Abolipop/Suplex, WOS, Impulsive Habitat,  Twice Removed,  Sonospace, Éter Lab & White Lab Recs

SHM Podcast #62: Reflexiones De Ventanilla By José Soberanes

For the first half of the twentieth century, Ellis Island stood as the gateway to America. For some twelve million people, it was their first encounter with the land they hoped to call home. 

Directed by acclaimed artist JR, ELLIS tells the story of one such migrant. Starring Robert De Niro, the film winds its way through the crumbling hallways of the abandoned Ellis Island hospital complex, now home to JR’s Unframed art installation. It’s a place that reverberates with the hopes and fears of those who passed through it, the echoes especially resonant today.

Entwined with the narrative is a score composed by Woodkid, performed and co-written by Nils Frahm. The delicate piano motifs of Winter Morning I culminate in a crescendo of strings, while the harmonium swells on the B-side are the foundation for De Niro’s narration: an encomium for those who shaped modern America. 

There’s perhaps never been a more fitting time for this story, with all the proceeds going to the Sea Watch initiative, a non-profit charity dedicated to the protection and rescue of civilian refugees. 

Following a screening as part of Nils’s Barbican Weekender, the ELLIS score will be out July 8th, the same week as America’s great federal holiday. It will be available via Erased Tapes as a mini album on CD, vinyl and in digital format containing a 12-page picture booklet.


IN THE ARTISTS’ OWN WORDS:

Nils Frahm: ‘The opportunity to work on JR´s fantastic short film ELLIS came through my good friend Yoann aka Woodkid. We agreed on recording the piano parts in my studio in Berlin and so it happened that JR and Woodkid were guests at Durton studio on a wonderful late summer day in 2015. We managed to record all the crucial elements that day. The music fell in our laps and melted with the images: a wonderful experience. The film has stuck in my head ever since; it moved my heart and changed my soul.

A couple of weeks later I had to cancel a trip to Brussels because of a terror warning; all events got cancelled and I stayed home, having an unexpected day off. I felt rather depressed that day, thinking that the Europe I knew was already gone. I sat down at the harmonium, listened to Robert De Niro’s voice and played for the rest of the day. The result is ‘Winter Morning II,’ the B-side of the ELLIS soundtrack release.

Robert says it all in 17 minutes. We are not facing a refugee crisis. We are facing a crisis because we do not embrace, we do not sympathise and we cannot give up fear. Art can encourage so I hope this project will help fight the fear in all of us.’

Yoann Lemoine, aka Woodkid:  ‘Ellis is my second collaboration with JR after the New York City Ballet piece for Les Bosquets. I initially wanted this piece to sound like it was recorded on an old piano that we found in the ruins of Ellis Island, in the restricted area that is not open to the public, where JR pasted the pictures on the walls for the film Ellis.

I had worked with Nils before and I wanted him to create a sound for this piano part that I composed that was extremely gentle and organic. I wanted the listener to hear the mechanisms, the breathing of the instrument. I wanted it to be imperfect, to sound like a ruin, a trace, an echo, the way the pastings on the walls seem to be ghosts, almost imperceptible.

After a few rehearsals, Nils stripped down my piano parts and we removed almost all orchestration around the piano. He then worked on the extended version that is his interpretation of my piece, with Robert de Niro’s vocals.

Because this film and this recording is historically meaningful, it was important for us to create this piece as an echo to the immigration situation in Europe, and decided to release it in support of Sea Watch.’

“Dérive” inhabits the beginnings of a new world. An inverted world, where fledgeling organic forms sprout from digital nuclei. Through rhythmical catenation, its primordial origins grow into sophisticated polymers of granular sound. The intricate background textures, like the distant field recordings of nature emerging from its binary source, uncover Derive's uncanny resolution -- a warm, pixelated atmosphere still coming into focus. Meditative mallet chimes, melodic synthesis and choral pads offer signs of the architect, Dimitar Dodovski, as he knowingly tweaks each parameter of creation; testing each derivation with every track.

I have always been almost obsessed with the concept of time. In recent years I am investigating and attending the world of meditation, and – about a year ago – I started to practice it regularly twice a day. While meditating we get into a very different dimension where feeling of time ceases to exit, when we are deeply into meditation we move away from the concept of time… Tracks presented here are not drones in the classical sense, as conceived by La Monte Young as having no beginning and no end, but for me they represent a possible soundtrack to the daily journey from matter to transcendence.

Martian Arts is Nectarios Meidanis. A BSc certified audio tech engineer and sound designer aficionado, that loves making psychedelic music using modular synths.
Has been releasing music under various projects, on various labels, including, TIP Records, Goa Productions, Zero1, Nano Records, Neurobiotic Records, Phantasm Records, Blue Hour Sounds.

Inspired by yesterday’s riffs, pushing forward in new styles.

MARTIAN ARTS | On the Way to Ozora 2017 | 06/05/2017

As highlighted by us in September last year, then Romanians have unwittingly formed a new blend of dance music, blending minimal techno & groove laden deep house, sewn up and exported to some of the clubbing world's hottest cities. Djs Rhadoo, Raresh and many more have helped to define a new sound amongst an overly-familiar genre - including hot export Priku. This Romanian musician and DJ shares a special 2 hour live mix with MEOKO, recorded at Bucharest's Snrs48 party, in turn delivering a live and unedited snapshot of his driving, deep and at times, subtle sound. A dynamic mix - playing with the space between notes and veering into minimal, atmospheric tapestries - Priku's focus on nuances in sound, percussive elements and thick slabs of bass running throughout shall take the MEOKO listener on a far flung, left of centre journey into a lesser known aesthetic.
