Helge Tømmervåg aka Mind over MIDI is a mysterious figure coming from the deep north of Europe, Norway. Residing in Kristianssund, Tømmervåg explored electronic msuic since his techno excursions in the late nineties to then land into the ambient/dub/experimental realms. Mind over MIDI has been a trustworthy beacon in the icey seas of Nordic electronic music.

For the fourth installment of our ‚Identity formation‘ podcast series, we are happy to present Mind over MIDI (@mind-over-midi-1). Hailing from Kristiansund on the northwest coast of Norway, Helge Tømmervåg has been crafting electronic sounds since the early '80s. His earliest work recorded under the now-familiar Mind over MIDI moniker arrived in the early '90s. He's released scores of highly regarded and stylistically uncompromising sounds over the years, appearing on labels including Silent Seasons, Diametric, Hibernate, Whitelabrecs, ROHS! Lontano Series, Shimmering Moods Records, Slow Tones Collages and via his own Berserk Fabrik.

His music can be described as sounds for daydreamers and nighthinkers. Inspired by the icy winds, snowy vistas and frozen landscapes in Norway.

If you can picture the very furthest, coldest, darkest part of Norway, that's where Mind over MIDI resides. If you want to get an idea of what it's like there, and can do without the frostbite, then this is the perfect solution.

SHM Podcast #75: Høstfarger by Mind over MIDI

We have journeyed far to the Eastern coastline of Scotland, to join hitherto unseen dots between the Firth of Tay Estuary and darkest Africa...Set along the edgelands where the city meets the water, engulfed by the cries of weird animals and the treacherous slurp of river mud, we find the place jutting out from the muck like remnants of some unrecognisable creature washed up on the tideline... Its bones slowly bleaching in the Sun, but its the place, cause exactly there is a creative workshop of our hero - mr. chOOn!! 

Caked in hiss, we knock on the door...Silence...Only drops of drizzling rain like tribal rhythms began to drum on the roof...Looks like nobodys home...Strange...We scan the walls of the crumbling artifice for clues and find the remnants of a crudely taped piece of parchment on the rear window ledge...It’s a map! In the upper part of what written by calligraphic handwriting flaunts the inscription:''Ravennatis Anonymi Cosmographia''...As we squint closer at the array of asterisks and cross-cutting lines our eyes converge on a pulsing black dot. Zoom in further and it becomes a throbbing planet - a mountain - on the Isle of Skye!

chOOn!! greets us with strong arms on the largest island of the archipelago... With each step it becomes clear why we met here - transformative things happen when you let yourself be part of nature - you might find yourself or lose yourself...Before reach our final destination, we embark on a midnight trek through the vast and lonely expanse of the Black Cuillin - an unforgiving mountain range dominated by towering cliffs and dramatic waterfalls followed by one of the most beautiful bays on the Island on the banks of which our camp awaits... 

Conversation abounds long into the night, much of which is taken up with rhythm and its transcendental components - Sitting, watching a tide come in slowly from one viewpoint over four hours, discussion centres around the creation of a cosmic mixtape - inspired by the surrounding area throughout the seasons and woven into a complex tapestry of the manmade and natural, synthetic and organic. Rooted in an impulse both ancient and original, the sound of the inner world hurling through a meticulously explored outer space - a natural ritual confronting the digital future. Subtle, hypnotic percussions as a response to world chaos...
