"For this inaugural edition of Temple, another new adventure alongside Josephine, I approached the set in a natural way, with only a few secure tracks and others chosen from many I've selected over months but haven't played for one reason or another. Given the volume of music circulating nowadays, my premise is mostly not to repeat them, a manifestly failed attempt to give visibility to so many creative and talented agents.

Horizontal listening events are my favorites. If we add that they are among familiar and new faces, it is in these moments where we can unleash our imagination without complexes and in a comfortable environment. "With closed eyes, I'm transported to a forest, surrounded by the scent of pine and wet grass. Sunglasses on, I settle into a camping chair as the psychedelic downtempo beats of the second day at Parallel Festival unfold. Feeling completely at ease, I sway to the music, and later, I rise from the chair to float, ensuring this magical moment becomes a cherished memory."

Hailing from Montevideo, Uruguay, Melina Serser (@melinaserser) began her musical odyssey in 2010 under the mentorship of Dj Koolt, emerging as a dedicated record collector. Over the past decade, she has developed a distinctive and refined musical style, establishing her standing as a respected downtempo maestro, recognized for her unique slow but danceable sound. In each performance, she skillfully mix a harmonious fusion of tribal rhythms, dub, ambient, down-tempo, mid-tempo and electronica. Sortilège was a soundscape created for a group exhibition of the same name at Nutshell Studios in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire curated by Patricia Brien & Viviana Rossi-Caffell. Rather than following and fitting in with any particular artwork I tried to stay true to the title, taking a random group of objects metaphorically throwing them into the air and ‘divining’ a pattern and ‘meaning’ from how they landed. I worked very quickly collecting sounds from household objects, scrap metal and from various old field recordings including bells from Gloucester Cathedral. Programmed, performed & processed using a Digitakt sampler straight to tape. No overdubs. 

About the artwork: 

‘Diamond in the Rough’, 2023, is part of a series of works deriving its title from the legend of the Genie’s Lamp. 
Originating from pre-Islamic mythology, Genies were initially associated with shapeshifting, possession and madness. In later Western popular representation and under the influence of Orientalism, they appeared in Western literature and film as wish-granting creatures living in magic lamps or bottles. Hidden in the depths of the Cave of Wonders, the Genie’s lamp can only be found by an individual known as the Diamond in the Rough: a person gifted by exceptional qualities and talents but unaware of them, lacking refinement and social skills. 
Drawing a parallel with the condition of the unknown artist and their work in their potential of becoming tangibly valuable only when found by the right hands in the Art World, ‘Diamond in the Rough’ draws playful connections with objects of desire, wishes and chance.

Awareness XXII: Ben Buitendijk

London-born, LA-based Ryan Griffin began @astrangelyisolatedplace a decade ago as a manifestation of his love for collecting and sharing music. The project soon grew into a vinyl label and a community of artists sharing a reverence for a diverse and esoteric range of genres, from ambient to electronica, modern classical to techno. Artists releasing on the label currently include Merrin Karras aka @chymera, Arovane (@arovane-1), Leandro Fresco & Rafael Anton Irisarri (@irisarri), @purl, and @markusguentner.

This atmospheric selection incorporates into A Strangely Isolated Place's signature sound additional elements of the trance and house music genres on which Ryan cut his DJing teeth. An organic approach to selection and mixing ensures a richly layered collage that manages to take some startling turns while remaining effortlessly cohesive throughout.

The goal of this feature and accompanying mix was to create a journey of escapism and comfort. Whereas the previous Portals feature, ‘Music For Sleeping’ could be deemed very similar, the approach here focused on keeping an attentive layer/s that ended up being more pure to Brian Eno’s definition of ambient music: “As ignorable as it is interesting”, which actually aligns very well with the definition of what it means to be mindful; "the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something”.
