Endurance on the mix:
"When Tet invited me to put together an hour for the show, she left it quite open-ended as to what I could do – a straight up mix, a collection of Endurance or Muzan tracks, or a live session. However, one thing that stuck with me was her suggestion that it might be interesting to do something uniquely from Japan, i.e. that listeners in Germany and in other countries might not get a chance to hear. This put me onto the idea of creating a mix using live material that would reflect the sound and atmosphere of the ambient parties I’m involved in here.
Coincidentally, the 8th edition of Osaka’s Don’t Dance party was happening right around the same time (Nov.21 specifically) and during the event I asked Hideo Nakasako and Chie Otomi to contribute to the mix. They were kind enough to agree, so the mix is basically three 20-minute live recordings from Endurance, Otomi, and Nakasako (in that order).

My contribution to this mix is the most minimal of the three. However, since that’s the direction my live performances have been going in recent years, I thought it would be good to include it. This piece was recorded live on modular synths around 4am after hearing Wata Igarashi play in Osaka. It’s perhaps one of the most sparse sets that I’ve done, but I really like how the minimalism helps to emphasize each sound more potently. I hope you enjoy.

Chie Otomi is one of my favorite producers. We’ve released two of her albums on Muzan (Namisen in 2018 and Touch Again in our latest batch) and she’s a regular at most of the events we organize. Primarily using a Waldorf Blofeld and a DSI Tempest, her sound is totally unique. She creates intense fourth world vibes, but on the micro level! I imagine a lot of her music as field recordings from some hidden ecosystem where things float and glow in a beautiful phosphorescent dance. The set she provided me is a very good representation of her live performances.

Closing out the mix is Hideo Nakasako. He is an ambient producer and the organizer of Don’t Dance, an ambient listening party that has been going on for a few years now. The most recent party, held at Club Daphnia, was a day party (from 3pm to 9pm), but the previous installments have mostly been all-night affairs, with ambient performances and DJ sets running from 11pm to early morning. Nakasako is also one of the most talented ambient artists in Japan, but since he hasn’t released a ton of music it’s likely that a lot of international listeners will be hearing him for the first time. His albums and monthly track releases are all top-notch, but his live sets are simply transformative – picture pitch-shifting, drifty synths and expertly processed samples that flow around the stereo field at a glacial pace. So good! Muzan released his incredible Texture of Days in 2019, but expect another Nakasako tape from us at some point in the new year..."

From a unique curation of Siné Buyuka, who is behind the London based Injazero Records, comes a record of Iranian descent, featuring two Tehran-based musicians: Shahin Entezami aka Tegh and Adel Poursamadi. The former has previously appeared with his experimental, noise, and drone works on labels such as Opal Tapes, Hibernate, Dronarivm, Midira, Futuresequence, and Flaming Pines just to name a few; while the latter is an established violinist (including the making of the instrument) and an active member of numerous ensembles and orchestras. Together, they have created an incredible soundscape, merging the electronic with the acoustic, and a focus on Iranian traditional music. “The album attempts to speculate new definitions of certain feelings – anger, confusion, excitement – in a non-anthropocentric, futuristic world, where human beings must seek new tools and approaches in attempting to express themselves to post-human creatures.” With the darker and harsher territories of the sonic palette becoming the ground base of Ima, the album takes the listener into uncomfortable territories and thereby requires one simply to feel all those suppressed and subconscious emotions which have been felt by this land for all time. Today I am sharing with you the third track from the album, titled Ijād (ایجاد in Persian, which means “creation”), traversing some powerful and stirring territories between sensations not felt until now.

"What if one day in the distant future, human beings, living among new forms of strange species, encounter unknown types of feelings? Feelings that simply do not ignite any sort of nostalgia and do not have the same physical/mental effects as common feelings” Ijād ایجاد attempts to define a new particular type of feeling, a combination of hatred and anger, that could make individuals feel deeply delighted or truly excited."

Halina Rice is a London-based electronic musician and AV artist renowned for her vivid and eclectic style, using multiple effects and sampling to create original and unique sounds. Uniting elements of ambient, experimental and dance music, her sound ranges from evocative and melancholic soundscapes to beat-driven tracks.

Releasing her debut album ‘REDUX’ in 2017 to critical acclaim, her music has been described as “sublime and infectious” by Electronic Sound magazine and as a “world of fragmentary beauty” by Clash, and on the 30th September, she is set to release her sophomore album ‘ELISION’, via Injazero Records, home to such artists as Heinali, KMRU and Hinako Omori.

‘ELISION’ takes its cue from abstract and actual worlds fusing together, a common theme in Rice’s music, with a vision of uniting music, art and technology. Ranging from experimental to IDM, the ten tracks across the album represent a breadth of styles and pace. Tracks fuse natural or analog sounds with unrealistic treatments “The idea is to evoke places that don't exist – like a surreal parallel world,” says Rice. Further tracks such as THIRD and HELIX draw influence from artists such as Rival Consoles and Max Cooper to create more dance-orientated compositions.

On ‘ELISION’, the album title track, Rice used audio tools to morph sounds together to help bring her sonic vision to life. The voice and synth are melded together, resulting in an other-worldy sonic experience, while the carefully crafted sounds of ‘HEY’, ‘HUNTER’ and ‘THIRD’ were initially concieved as part of a commission for the WITCiH digital festival, supporting Rice to explore innovation.

A key component of Rice’s work is the creation of immersive experiences and in 2020 she launched the NEW WORLDS project – where each release comprised both music and the creation of a virtual environment in which Rice performed live as a digital projection. She also works closely with partner L-Acoustics to deliver performances in spatial audio. “In one sense, immersive is a technical description of how I might present sound or projections, but from an emotive stance, it's more about the desire to create an experience for the audience which takes them outside of the day to day. I try to create tracks which evoke an emotion that translates to the listener.”

As a producer of electronic music working with an international team of visuals artists, Rice has consistently strived to create increasingly immersive AV environments in which to envelop her listeners, with her sold out live shows being described as “part rave, part art-happening.” She has performed at venues including Abbey Road Studios, Copeland Gallery, Sonica Arts Festival and Iklectik. Recently, Rice collaborated with Zaha Hadid Architects, creating a virtual reality installation. She is set to perform a series of live shows this autumn – details to be announced.

Almost one year after his debut LP Feed The Tape, Orson Hentschel enters new musical terrain wearing old shoes. His second LP Electric Stutter, which is almost 55 minutes long, is only loosely connected to his debut. Whereas Feed The Tape was strongly shaped by Classical Minimal Music, Hentschel now incorporates influences of Trip-Hop and Electronic Pop Music. Since his childhood, he considers artists like Massive Attack, Portishead and Björk as some of his most important sources of inspiration. The influence of this kind of popular music is clearly audible. Hentschel’s new tracks are shorter, more shaped and reduced in the density of their sound material. Pattern-oriented repetitions, which where in the focus of Feed The Tape, now fulfil the function of sophisticated sub-components of the overall composition and are subordinate to the melodic forms or merge with them. Also the amount of sample-based material has decreased in order to create space for synthetically produced sounds with melodic character. Electric Stutter is more complex and more detailed than Feed The Tape. At the same time the reduced density of sound material and the higher amount of melodies form a kind of music that is more easily accessible.

Whereas the Düsseldorf-based composer started off with classical piano, he by now concentrates on electronic and experimental music and film compositions. Even though Hentschel has experienced a classical education, his composition techniques are anything but traditional. His creative starting point is rarely rooted in musical ideas, but consists of finding appropriate sound material. His sources are diverse: sounds and samples like soundtracks, film sounds, music albums or internet findings encounter polyphonic vocal-music from the 14th century and composition techniques of Minimal Music such as Steve Reich. In his compositions Hentschel draws a cross-section through the history of music and its genres in order to form his own musical expression. Considering his studies of music science in Düsseldorf and previously in Vienna and Dresden, his musical time-jumps appear less surprising.    

Describing Orson Hentschel only as a composer of contemporary music does not do him justice. In his self-conception as an audio-visual artist he creates his own live show, combining lights, visuals and fog to a stunning atmosphere, which cannot be eluded. Supported by live-drummer Lukas Baumgart, Hentschel delivers a sound, whose energy is physically palpable and electrifies the audience. A live-show generating an intense experience, going to the limit and erasing any sense of time. Orson Hentschel moves perceptions not merely through sheer volume, but with driving repetitions and extensive tension.

Heinali is the alias of self-taught composer and sound-designer Oleg Shpudeiko from Ukraine. Now well established under the name he brings along his latest full length ‘Iridescent’ due for release on October 12th on Injazero Records. 

Having garnered rapturous responses to his earlier output and last year’s ‘Anthem’ Oleg continues to push the boundaries and experiment with altering mood and atmospheres of any space - with abstract yet deeply personal transmissions of ambient synthesiser work and subaqueous, minimal techno contortions. 

‘Iridescent’ consists of fragments of studio improvisation sessions recorded in 2016 and 2017, some of them recorded in one unedited take on a modular system and some layered and later morphed into compositions. As the title suggests Heinali crafts shimmering, incandescent portraits, rich in his unique characteristics and compositional liberty. 

Apart from the “musical sculptures,” that represent the bulk of this LP, Oleg was interested in the exploration of polyphonic capabilities of the modular system. ‘Rainbow Folding’, a loose homage to Terry Riley’s 'A Rainbow In Curved Air,' features an interplay of several independent, but distinct voices and their processed shadows — ‘ghost voices’. In 'Shadow Invention’ eerie atmospherics steal the spotlight and dominate the composition, ending in a cacophony of the ‘ghost voices’. 

Oleg says of the album, “it’s a kind of studio dairy. A reflection on the development of my relations with the hardware instruments and exploration of them as channelling vessels for my experiences and ideas.” 

“One can think of Iridescent’ as ‘musical sculpture’ analogy — when the body of music stays the same, but its surface is flickering with various colours over time — sometimes in a subtle manner, sometimes loud and clear. Or it can be understood in the context of various colours of polyphony, or as a liminal condition of the colour as if it’s being ‘stuck’ in the mist of twilight zone between neighbouring colour-states, so it can’t become a particular colour and is in a flickering kaleidoscopic state.” 

‘Iridescent’ bares Oleg’s style of sonic storytelling and austere, otherworldly textural embellishments that bring to mind Ben Frost, Akira Yamaoka, and Oneohtrix Point Never but also plants the seed for much more club ready electro. ‘Starling Reprise I’ is a scorching piece of ambient techno that conjures Four Tet, LTO and Susumu Yokota’s blissful, kaleidoscopic synth work whilst ‘Starling Reprise II’ retains the frosty, steely ambience that has become Heinali’s calling card.
