Using a mess of Native Instruments virtual tracks, I put together a little something funky for the new year.

Native Funk

Performed by the 2016-2017 University of Northwestern - St. Paul Symphonic Band (directed by John S. Herlihy)at their Winter Concert on 24 February 2017.

A sudden thought: two large drum hits followed by a minor horn solo; ethereal landscape of tinkling percussion; massive chordal brass. That initial idea became the beginning of "For the End of Time" with few modifications, and the rest of it came from development of the primary theme (introduced in the horn solo) and other bursts of inspiration. A sense of mystery pervades throughout, as open brass chords evoke the shrouded past while the changing meters and open ending alludes to the unknown future. The combination of ancient and forthcoming events along with grandiose and even bombastic intensity culminates into an overarching apocalyptic flair, thus providing the Revelation-esque title of "For the End of Time".

Brad Rau received a scholarship to attend New England Conservatory (NEC), and received a Master’s degree in 2015 with academic honors. At NEC, he studied classical guitar under Eliot Fisk who was the last pupil of Andres Segovia. Brad has performed in countless masterclasses with instructors including; Sharon Isbin, and Andrew York both Grammy award winning guitarists. Brad’s personal learning methods have enabled him to memorizing over 8 hours of the most difficult repertoire for the classical guitar. Brad was a semi-finalist in the International Texas Guitar Competition of 2008.  Brad currently studies under Grammy awarding winnings guitarist Jason Vieaux. Brad has been performing music for over 20 years all over Boston, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware, as a classical guitarist, rock guitarist, and rock drummer.  Brad currently teaching music lessons at Taylor’s Music in West Chester, and performs every Friday at the Brandywine Distillery.  Brad has mentored hundreds of students of all ages, styles and levels. Many of Brad’s students have gone on to develop their own music careers and teaching studios.

Brad’s unique teaching style combines music, physics, philosophy and humor, making him a well-rounded instructor for a variety of students.

The lore of Azteccia comes from a series of recurring dreams in which I (in the form of a fox) would explore a dreamscape divided into four quadrants, each with its own animalistic rulers. The south is a massive rainforest with swamps and lush foliage. Banto, a gorilla who rules from an overgrown medieval-style castle, values affection and respect above all else, believing it can conquer even what nature might try to forbid. The north is mountainous, scattered with crag rock and tall slender white firs. Raza, the lioness of this region, lives in a stone house on the edge of a steep cliff, living most of her days in a drunken stupor. She values the blissful pleasures the world has to offer as well as the authenticity of self-expression. The east is a desert land, filled with dry shrubs and red mountains. Tsame, a tiger who lives in a blue and green oasis, values an appreciation for the complexity of a world filled with contradictions. This concept can easily be applied one’s own personal beliefs. Each warns him of the tyrant bear of the west, Giriyama, a conqueror who lives in an ancient pyramid surrounded by forest and vines. He values strength above all else, and offers to share his mystic power to the fox (in exchange for blind servitude). The fox refuses the bear’s offer, and instead seeks to dethrone the tyrant of the west. The music was written to encapsulate these characters, and to provide sketches of an overall larger story. All titles and subtitles were provided after the fact to make narrative sense of the chaos that is a dream.

I have no idea why I called it Sandwich Dream. I only remember writing it a few years ago when I finally upgraded my FInale and wanted to experiment with the shiny new instrument and sound options.


The instrumentation is harp, flute, and violin and may or may not be playable.
