I absolutely thought the SPEW and house elf storyline was building to an actual point for later books: I assumed it was to make some of the good guys complicit in the evil of slavery and show its the system itself, with a later book showing them how wrong they were and how Hermione was right and the house elves as a whole proving crucial to saving the day in book 7 and all of them gaining their independence. Imagine my surprise when it's never mentioned again...

Chamber of Secrets chapters 17-18. We've done it! Our second book comes to a close, but we have lots to discuss, including: anagrams, phoenixes, and Harry's continued cluelessness until the bitter end. After our own plot discussion, we visit Pottermore's officially selected Book Club questions in an attempt to figure out what the hell is in the water there.
