Emmer & Einkorn are a duo operating in the ambient dub techno department: with previous releases with their solo aliases Human Resources & Mallard respectively on popular underground dance music labels Devil’s Work (Idle Hands) and Rhythm Section INTL, not to mention a prior EP on Esker Tapes back in 2020.

Biodiversity’s second release builds off the first with a deep and rewarding LP from these enigmatic producers. In those 4 years since their s/t (ESKER03) tape, the ambient dub aesthetic has built underground acclaim off the relative streaming success of acts like Purelink, Gi Gi and Cousin - releasing often on tape focussed labels existing within the Bandcamp ecosphere. With E & E keen at work on ‘Karst’ over these past few years, the intersection of European producers with the majoritively American online scene thanks to labels like Jungle Gym and IDS Recordings, is finally here.

Karst represents the concept presented in Arthur Conan Doyle’s quote, creating a sonic landscape inspired by specific features within the Peak District - heavily explored by the artists in their native Derbyshire. 

Shute Shelve (Beetlerun) is an excellent peregrination of ambient, dub and techno elements.

Into Linus' Rabbit hole is an adaptation of a previous piece for Bass Clarinet. Everything is built up around 80's King Crimson style guitar patterns, creating these patterns around harmony and melodies i already had is what drove the writing of this music.

Into Linus' Rabbit Hole - Linus Fenton Quintet

Seattle’s DJ Zumba, labelhead to the freshly-minted ‘Tech Startup’ imprint, holds responsibility for the latest addition to the mix series. The set is inspired by his recent travels, the folks he spent time with along the way, and ultimately, his return to the Pacific Northwest. Cool, calm, and collected sounds help compose the synth-rinsed hour, bubbling up with breaks and occasionally plunging deep down with dubbier grooves.   

Tech Startup’s inaugural 12-inch, ‘TS000001’ by A Psychic Yes, points towards the labels complex and energizing sound - available currently on their Bandcamp. On the horizon, they’ve got a party lined up on November 24th at the Timbre Room with support from RX-0 Banshee, Streets 1:10, and one of Seattle’s clean-up hitters - Livwutang. 

A stripling with his hands in a lot of pots, Zumba shows promise for what Seattle has in store. Enjoy.
