“The Tara that can be understood cannot be a cosmic Tara. The Tara that can be expressed in words, cannot be the infinite Tara. Yet Tara is the source of everything.” This quotation is adapted from the Tao de Ching by Laozi and encapsulates how we need to think in order to approach Tara. Rinpoche introduces us to Tara and guides us to make a connection with her, both through elaborate pujas and in simple, unelaborated, daily practice.

Teachings given on March 8, 2013 by Lama Tsering Gyaltsen, a founding teacher, at Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute in Eugene, Oregon, USA on the subject "The Six Bardo's - The Intermediate States of Existence" 

“Bardo” is a Tibetan word meaning literally “between two,” which in Buddhism refers to the idea that within Samsara all states of existence are not static, but are actually continuous, successive, ordered facets of beginningless transition.  What we usually refer to as “life and death” are only two among the six bardos that are traditionally enumerated. 

Each Bardo has its own form of expression and development, and each presents beings with unique opportunities for the realization of enlightenment, or for advancement toward enlightenment, or conversely for decline into greater suffering.  Bardo teachings such as these are an important key to knowing where we are, which way to go, and  how to proceed.

During the solar eclipse of 21 June 2020 Siddhartha's Intent hosted a global recitation of the Samantabhadra Aspiration Prayer.
We were fortunate to receive a teaching from Rinpoche, who painted a picture of the mind that, for lack of a better word, "composed" a prayer which has no composer: our naked cognisance, our naked awareness. The Kuntuzangpo prayer is just there; it's being recited and answered all the time. When a beautiful sunrise appears, if the owl doesn't see it because it's blind, too bad! If we can't see these prayers that are being answered, we're like an owl. There's not much we can do, just pray not to be an owl, which is what we do when we recite the prayer.

The triple gem refers to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha: the three pillars of the buddhist path. When we take refuge in the three jewels we let go of our old values and step outside our comfort zone to begin to deconstruct the paradox of how we exist as a mass of tangled emotions, while at the same time we are the Buddha. Ultimately there is only one jewel, which we will eventually have to discard, just as we abandon the boat we have taken once we reach the other shore. Letting go of the path will be the hardest and most interesting part of our journey.

A unique feature of the Buddhadharma is the seemingly paradoxical interdependence of wisdom and method. As method is more tangible, it is easy to forget about wisdom. Meditation, for example, has become a popular method for stress relief. But making our lives more comfortable is absolutely not the purpose of Buddhism. We are entangled in habitual patterns and these habits, as they become solid, become an organized and rigid system. Using wisdom we can try to destabilise our habits and for this we need method. There are infinite methods to choose from, one of which is chanting OM MANI PADME HUM, the mantra of compassion associated with Avalokiteśvara. On a profound level, chanting this mantra creates a vibration in our mind, prana and chakras which will help to deconstruct our habitual patterns and enable us to see the truth.

The Heart Sutra or Prajñāpāramitā is the quintessence of the Mahayana teachings. This sutra can protect us from all the problems caused by our deluded conceptions of this mundane world. Our projections lead to action and action to reaction, to create an ordered system: samsara. “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form” gives us the tools to destabilise samsara and find liberation, but we can only experience this emptiness directly through practice. Meditation is a method for us to access the wisdom of emptiness but eventually must itself be deconstructed, just as a boat is abandoned once we reach the other shore.
