WOODPIG is the latest project from Hastings-based Al Mitchell, blending indie-folk and Americana roots with modern electronic production. Armed with just his guitar and a passion for storytelling, Mitchell draws inspiration from folk legends while using electronic textures to elevate his sound. His songs evoke a deep sense of change, loss, resilience and personal journey, channeling the rustic charm of traditional folk with a contemporary twist. WOODPIG’s music embodies a unique fusion of acoustic warmth and atmospheric electronics, allowing Mitchell to craft narratives that resonate in both intimate and expansive sonic landscapes.

We are honored to present ‘Bird Machine’, the fifth Sparklehorse album. Before his death in 2010, Mark Linkous, one of indie rock’s most distinctive and influential songwriters, had recorded tracks with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio, and in his own studio, Static King. The careful and important work of archiving these recordings and bringing them to light was guided by his brother, Matt, who describes these songs as “honest and pure; and without pretense.” The finished results are instantly and unmistakably recognizable as Sparklehorse, with all the tenderness and sense of wonder that Mark shared so beautifully.

Influenced by the awkward prophets of the American subculture before him (Grandaddy, Eels, Ariel Pink), but incorporating pop hooks worthy of indie-pop luminaries such as Beck, Pheonix, & MGMT, Mitchell is carving out his own fascinating path through the UK music landscape. The plaudits being received for his new musical direction the result of years learning his craft in and around the burgeoning alternative scene of his hometown of Hastings; a scene he can legitimately lay claim to having helped forge with his other bands Baby Goliath, Somnians and King The Native. But Mitchell is far too humble to make such proclamations, being as he is, the seaside town's poster boy for shy alternative rock. 

As is such for the introverted, he learned to be resourceful, honing his craft as both a songwriter and producer from the confines of his own four walls for the better part of a decade. In his latest incarnation, Al and his New Born Sinners strike a perfect marriage between his past and future musical directions, blending dirty guitars with beautiful synthesisers, and a passion for live drum sounds.
