Bebe Cool (born 1 September 1977) (real name Moses Sali) is a top African Reggea and ragga musician from Uganda. He started his career around 1997 in Nairobi, Kenya, but a few years later he moved back to his native country. Bebe Cool was one of the first artists affiliated with Ogopa DJs, a production house and record label in Kenya.
Two of his popular singles are "Fitina" and "Mambo Mingi".[1] He also collaborated with Halima Namakula, a Ugandan veteran woman musician, on their crossover track "Sambagala". He has released two solo albums, Maisha and Senta. His lyrics are in Luganda, Swahili, and English.
Bebe Cool is a three times winner of the Artist of The Year Award at the Prestigious HiPipo Music Awards[2] and won several accolades at Pearl of Africa Music Awards (PAM Awards).[3] He was nominated for the Kora All-African Awards in 2003 and 2005. He has toured in the UK and the US.[4]
Together with Kenyan duo Necessary Noize, Bebe Cool has formed a reggae group known as the East African Bashment Crew. They have released one album, Fire, and two hit singles, "Africa Unite" and "Fire". The group is nominated at the inaugural (2008) MTV Africa Music Awards.[5]
In January 2010 he was injured when a policeman shot at him.[6]
On 11 July 2010, Bebe Cool was performing at the Kyadondo Rugby Club when a bomb set by Somali Islamist terrorist group al-Shabaab exploded (July 2010 Kampala attacks). According to Cool, "Most people who died were just in front of me. The blast was so loud—the next thing I saw were body parts flying over."[7]
Bebe Cool performed Nelson Mandela 46664 concert at Hyde Park London and was also named the by Nelson Mandela as the 46664 African ambassador. 46664 is a campaign of raising awareness against HIV /AIDS that was initiated by the late Nelson Mandela. At the concert Bebe Cool put up a great live performance that is still memorable to millions of music fans across the globe.
In 2012, Bebe Cool was voted Uganda’s greatest artist since Uganda's independence on 9 October 1962.[8] A poll conducted was conducted by Kasuku media services all over Uganda as part of the event “Ugandan music at 50 years since independence” Bebe Cool polled the highest number of votes beating his bitter rivals.
In 2014 Bebe Cool’s Born in Africa remix song was voted among Africa’s greatest songs of all time.[9] The song came at number 15 in Fifty anthems for the African continent. BBC World Service listeners suggested the African songs that summed up the continent to them.[9] This was to mark the 50th anniversary of the African Union – formerly the Organization of African Unity, From the suggestions, the BBC’s DJ Edu, who hosts a weekly African music show on BBC radio, compiled them into a special five-minute mix of 50 songs from 50 countries.[9]
Bebe Cool has performed in the Big Brother house twice.
In 2013 Bebe Cool had a music battle with one of Nigeria's top artists D'banj in a neutral place Glamis Arena Harare Zimbabwe.[10] The show was organized under the theme Battle for Africa Bebe Cool put up a great performance at the battle.[10]
Bebe Cool is husband to model and former Miss Uganda contestant Zuena Kirema and is now a father of three; two sons and a daughter, Alpha Thierry, Beata and Caysan respectively.

Music and songs from Faytinga, African woman singer and musician from Eritrea, with a Kunama heritage.

Faytinga — born Dahab Faid Tinga and also known as Dehab Faytinga — comes from the Kunama people, one of Eritrea’s many tribes, where women and men have equal rights. Born in 1964, she joined the liberation struggle at the age of fourteen, where she was given education and later become a combatant until the liberation in 1991. Her mother grew up in the highlands of Eritrea, while her father was a revered figure among the  Kunama people, fighting for his homeland. He was given the nickname of ‘Fighting gun’ (taken from his name ‘Faid Tinga’) by the British administration in the early 50’s.

Her dream to become a singer came true when she was sent to entertain troops on the front, using her songs as a message of hope and determination. She composes her own songs and also interprets work from well known Eritrean poets and composers. When singing, she plays the krar, a small lyre. An           accomplished and elegant dancer as well as talented singer, she became a leading figure and source of inspiration to her country men and women.

In 1990, she toured the US and Europe as a member of the Sibrit band, the National Folkloric Troupe of  Eritrea. She toured for the first time as a solo artist in 1995 after releasing her first album on tape. She won the 2nd prize and 1st East African women singer at the 2000 Ma’ Africa in Benoni, South Africa. It took until 1999 and an appearance at the Africolor festival in France, before she could record her first album ‘Numey’.

The CD album ‘Numey’ is her first international release on the Paris-based Cobalt Records label. All of the songs on this album are in Kunama, a very old African language. When listening, some ties to West African music surface. The Eritrean bass-lute called the wata is remarkably similar to the ngoni. Another similarity with music from the other side of the continent, many of my songs are ‘advice’ songs, such as  Numey’ (‘Don't interrupt the teller’). However, her delicate vocals are decidedly East African, as are the lyrics of songs like ‘Milomala’, a song from Eritrea's struggle for independence in the 1980s.

In 2003, still finding her inspiration in Eritrea’s musical tradition with krar and wata, she also brought guitar, flute, and percussions in her second album ‘Eritrea’. Freedom fighter woman turned musician, she has always been interested in music and developed her style ‘in the field’ that represents her own blend of several traditional music forms.

Faytinga has been performing around the world representing Eritrea as a 'cultural ambassador' for her country. She participated to Expo 2005 in Aichi, Japan and to Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China. She also attended the Earth Summit 2002 held in Johannesburg, South Africa. In addition, she has been collaborated with other artists such as the group Ouï-Dire in an attempt to mix her voice, her music and culture with that of other continents. 

Faytinga is one of the first Eritrean artists engaged in support of people living with HIV and AIDS. She has participated in numerous World AIDS Day events including as guest-star singer on 1st December 2003 during the event held at the Hotel Intercontinental, and in June 2005, together with Kenyan singer Achieng Abura in an exceptional gala diner concert for the benefit of women and children affected by HIV and AIDS. She also performed on the occasion of the opening of the Namibia gender-based violence Art Exhibition on 10 December 2013 at UNAIDS Headquarters in Geneva.

Daniel J Gerstle's current project, Songs for the Bomb Shelter is an intentionally low-fi double album collection of psychadelic folk demos, live jams, and other b-sides mostly on the theme of surviving war and building peace. The low-fi bomb shelter theme reminds listeners that many around the world must cope with war in hiding without electricity, so for them it's important to have songs you can jam in the bomb shelter whent he lights have gone out. The album's mix of tracks are recorded in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Kenya, the US, and the UK. The project was previously developed under the band names, Mostar '96 and Kilometer Zero.

Daniel is an American writer/ filmmaker/ musician/ concert producer who has performed live in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Somalia, and the United States. He also produced the historic and dangerous 2013 Mogadishu Music Festival in Somalia, the 2013 Journey of Peace Festival in refugee camps in Kenya, and co-produced the 2011 Sound Central Festival in Afghanistan. 

Starting with hometown grunge band, Inferno, and college rock band, Green Jelly, Daniel later returned to performing with Yula Be'eri's post-punk outfit YXFM (Yula & the Extended Family, formerly known as Nanuchka) in the United States. He has recorded backing music for Somali hip hop group, Waayaha Cusub, and YXFM. His current project, Shrapnel Core: Songs for the Bomb Shelter will be completed in 2018.
