Well *that* was something else. Truly.

This was the fourth successive year I'd played a sunrise on the Playa with my most excellent friends at the Nutz camp, and this year *everyone* upped the bar. The One Series (my vehicle for DJs to express themselves fully through uber-long sets) effectively sprang out of the love & passion for these ethereal mornings at Burning Man, so it seemed fitting that this would become One Playa Sunrise.

As with every year the sun was shining, everyone wore a vast, passionate smile with wonderful sights & sounds filling the air. We were joined by The Dusty Rhino & Painkiller, along with most of Distrikt. It was the perfect morning.

At the end, six intensely wonderful hours later, I dissolved into tears, not for the first time this week & the dancefloor submerged me.

August 2023 Mixtape

A RE:CONSTRUCTED set is a *long* way removed from a standard DJ set. Here's how it works.

Simon takes hundreds of tracks from his huge library, painstakingly deconstructs them (using Ai if needed to separate elements from the original tracks), and then pieces everything back together to create a hugely emotive and immersive musical story.

He uses Ableton Live and multiple controllers to trigger up to 16 individual channels of audio at any one time during the performance, and also performs live keyboard overdubs. The end result is a hugely addictive, compulsive and compelling blend of music that's often new, often familiar but always utterly unique.

This is storytelling on a giant canvas, and in 2024 we will be adding visuals and further live instrumentation to these RE:CONSTRUCTED sets.

Simon Shackleton has been a Force to be reckoned with in Electronic Music over the past 25 years. He cut his teeth in the original acid house era when he performed in bands with Thom Yorke (Radiohead), went on to provide soundtracks from Hollywood blockbusters (The Matrix, Charlie's Angels) under his Lunatic Calm guise and then forged his own way with his Fused & Bruised label, home to his output as Elite Force for several years. 

After stints on Moonshine and City of Angels in the US and Whole9Yards in the UK, he founded U&A Recordings back in 2006 as a vehicle for his own music, including his Zodiac Cartel productions. More recently, he has diversified with new imprint Stereophoenix, and recording under his real name has been responsible for a whole host of deeper, euphoric, techy productions. He also founded The One Series, a bespoke series of events featuring One DJ, One Room, All Night, at which he's played a number of 6, 7 and 8-hour sets.

A Burning Man regular, Simon has also played many of the world's biggest festivals, including Coachella, Glastonbury, Future Music Festival, Shambhala, Rainbow Serpent, Kazantip and many more. This exclusive one-hour mix was compiled during a recent trip to Beijing, China.

We'd been waiting for this one since NYE when an impromptu tag set happened between these two and we knew it was fate at it's finest hour.  We got the boys together and the result was incredible, a 4 hour B2B set with The Scumfrog also providing some live drums to compliment the set had Mighty in a frenzy of dance.  We are certainly looking forward to doing this again!

This is the beginning of a new series of mixes and live events I’m calling CHPTR – a space for storytelling through sound.

Each mix will explore a different emotional arc, unfolding like a narrative across genres, tempos, and textures. Some will be recorded live in the studio, others captured live at CHPTR events. They’re connected by a shared intention: to take you on a journey.

Each set is crafted to unfold like a narrative – rich in texture, emotional depth, and movement. Not just a collection of tunes, but a journey with intention behind every transition, shift, and silence.

CHPTR 001 is, in many ways, a psychedelic selection – not in the hippy sense, but in how it gently alters perception over time. It starts slow, ambient, and introspective, gradually evolving through hypnotic grooves, off-kilter house, breakbeats, and late-night techno. It’s cinematic, immersive, and designed to be experienced as a whole.

Featuring music by Mark Barrott, Jose Solano, Dizharmonia, LTJ, Josh Wink (Adana Twins Remix – Simon’s VIP Edit), Left/Right, BRONSON, and unreleased edits and reconstructions of my own.

The dust blew in hard. Relentless. All Burn long. Destroyed pretty much everything. Beautiful it was.
There was true love, crushing loss, epiphany, change.

We were challenged, confronted, baffled, amused.

It threw us curveballs, softballs, thrashed our weary minds to the point of burnout.

In the middle of this Carnival of Chaos, were the twin techno towers of DISTRIKT, letting fly with winning smiles, throbbing bass, passionate hugs, rainbow tears and a sense of unity through the beauty of the beat.

We wore black. And we fucking rocked.

Decoded Magazine Presents Simon Shackleton

This is a partial recording of an amazing morning I had in Vegas this summer at my good friend Andrea's birthday bash. A whole bunch of reprobates from legendary West Coast crews (Space Cowboys, Distrikt, The Nutz) took over the Artisan hotel for two full days and nights. Reprehensible behaviour clearly followed with Andrea taking the lead on her newly 'acquired' mobility scooter.

I took to the decks around 4am, 'fresh' from having played at DefCon, a giant hacker's convention in one of the big casino hotels. I was playing off a (borrowed) USB stick for the first time, and amongst the shenanigans unfolding was me loading up a few more tracks off my laptop whenever we ran out and hot-swapping the decks as we rolled into the next day.

It's unclear how long I played for, as this is just an excerpt of the set which randomly dropped in my mailbox several months later, but I figured it'd be nice to have for posterity for those who were there ... and for the mildly curious, of course.
