Fork and Knife - SIMPLYDUBS#011

Hello Fork and Knife, How's it going? One of the questions I'll start with is one I've personally wondered for a while, where did the origin of your producer name come from? 

Oh hi! So the name is actually from a song by a band called brand new. Very much a throwback to 00’s emo. It wasn’t even a song I felt particularly strongly about but for whatever reason the name resonated with me. Kinda like the idea of calling myself something inanimate and mundane. The amount of trouble the ‘and’ has caused me though. Some places I’m listed as ‘fork & knife’, ‘fork + knife’ or 2 separate artists ‘fork’ and ‘knife’. Spent a lot of energy trying to get it all the same but it’s not that easy. 

What is your favourite track from the mix and why?

That’s a toughy - I guess it’d probably be one of the collabs I’ve got in there. Always love working with vocalists. Seems like a more complete tune with a vocal on it. I’m still a big fan of ‘Chop’ - the collab I did with 6 Korean MCs a couple of years ago. The instrumental is actually a bit throwaway but everyone on the tune smashed it. Can’t take a whole lot of credit for it as it was all put together by Damndef who, if you don’t know, is a sick Korean MC flying the grime flag over there. Also the Juma collab ‘Pattern It’ is sick. Annoyingly got released just as we went into our first lockdown so still haven’t heard it in a club setting. I do find that, generally, the quicker I finish a tune, the more I like it. It’s those ones that write themselves that are the best. You don’t get time to get sick of it. 

You work with the label In:flux Audio quite a lot from what I can see, is there something that keeps drawing you back to this label? 

In:flux Audio… Those guys! I do work with them a lot don’t I. They’re just good dudes. Had the pleasure of spending a bit of time up in Leeds with them and they’re nice people which is a big plus. Their release schedule runs like clockwork too. Aaron’s got a real passion for organisation by the looks of things and is always on job. It’s healthy company there. They’re putting out some really forward thinking dubstep and 140 and genuinely put out some of my favourite music of last year. The output is so consistent and the accompanying art they have now is sick. So if you’re reading this and don’t know who they are (which is unlikely) check em out! 

What's your favourite release from this year so far? 

Well obviously love that new Tik&Borrow EP 😉 and the Fork and Knife release in January wasn’t bad either. Aside from that… LR Groove has just put out some stupidly heavy funky on Low Pitched called ‘silverback’. Feel like I’m gonna be playing that one for a long time. I’d actually go as far to say that’s my favourite release of the year so far. Ticks every box for me.

What should we expect from you in the future? 

Loads of releases basically. As well as In:flux, there’s a few other labels I’ve got good relationships with and release a fair bit of stuff. Cocobolo Sound, 4NCY, Reloaded Sounds (Check out my new collab with Hayz), 1Forty. I’ve got all sorts coming out covering various genres and bpms. The last couple of releases I’ve put out have leaned more towards the 140/ dubstep/ grime sound but I’ve got plenty of funky/ bassy stuff in the works for later this year. Lots of vocal led tunes are on the agenda which is exciting. Had a few of them back and they’re sounding massive. I recently moved to Bristol so am looking forward to getting stuck into the scene here (once stuff starts moving again) as it seems to be thriving.
