It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that Opium is currently the most talked about club North of Berlin. Vilnius based spot has built its reputation slowly but surely to become one of the brightest lights in the night sky of Europe. The club has earned the admiration of local crowd, loyalty of visiting artists and respect of industry insiders by nurturing unique local talent, bringing cutting edge House & Techno acts on a weekly bases, building a devoted community and rocking the parties of the highest intensity and unprecedented intimacy. Its no wonder Boiler Room and Resident Advisor both came knocking on the door in 2017 for special features and events.

2018 marks another milestone in club’s incredible journey: the first ever music compilation entitled “Opium of the People”, a rock solid collection of 13 unreleased tracks by core residents and the members of extended Opium family from all around the world featuring Tel Aviv’s producer and song writer Autarkic, Australia-born-Europe-bound New Age travellers Dreems and Kris Baha, Canadian smooth operator Thomas Von Party, Frankfurt’s Musikmaschine Lauer, German-Mexican studio encounter of Sebastian Voigt & Theus Mago, Berlin based Spanish fashionista Hugo Capablanca, Detroit legend Sharif Laffrey and Russian crate digging trio of Leonid Lipelis, Sergey Krylow and Ilya Simonov under the name of Plungerbird x Beard in Dust. Most of them are coming to Lithuanian capital’s hot spot so often, they could easily start their own fan clubs in town. The local talent also gets a well-deserved attention. Manfredas, Siaubas, Pletnev, and V find their place on the compilation and bring the modern sound of Vilnius nights to the vanguard.

“Opium of the People” has been conceived and compiled by Vidmantas “V” Cepkauskas, the head of programming and resident DJ of Opium, a well-known contributor to the electronic music scene for nearly two decades. He has reinvented a friends-to-friends after-hours place into an international music institution in a matter of six seasons and is the best candidate to curate and present “Opium of the People”.

Following the much loved release of cult 1981 Yugoslavian film soundtrack Visitors from the Galaxy back in March, the innovative @Foxandhisfriends label is back with another fascinating package. This time it comes in the form of a previously unreleased bit of experimental electronica from Zagreb and former Yugoslavian collective NEP, complete with a modern re-rub by @Snuffo. 

NEP was a loose multimedia collective formed in 1982 that saw founder Dejan Krsic collaborate with various artists in a quest to re-think the stale concepts of art history and the barriers between pop and elitist high culture. Influenced by Walter Benjamin and Andy Warhol in theory, and Brian Eno and Kraftwerk in music, Krsic created NEP as an umbrella term (meaning Nova Evropa) of diverse rule-breaking activities that covered graphic design, music, photography, video, news media and theoretical work. Musically, NEP focused on experiments in ambient and tape-music, mostly self-released or on hard to find compilations like The Cassette Played Poptones from 1988. 

NEP on this 1989 track was led by Dejan Krsic, now famous graphic designer and art historian in Croatia, but other collaborators include Laibach and Borghesia photographer Jane Stravs, artist and TV director Gordana Brzovic, Jovan Culibrk, now Bishop at The Serbian Orthodox Church and Anja Rupel, singer of cult Yugoslavian synth-pop group Videosex.

In 1989, as the group reached the peak of its powers, the ‘Decadance’ track presented here was conceived in the studio, but was never published. Restored and mastered from original reel-to-reel tapes and pressed on wax for the first time, this single is a sneak-peak into the world of POP NOT POP, an album and graphic book merged into one multimedia entity that will be released later this year

With pumping Roland 808 beats, sampled vocals from Linda Cooper asking herself “How do I dance to this music?” and a cold wave groove, it is brilliantly retro futuristic and is sure to become a real cult classic.

Remixing it is German producer Snuffo, the masked hero of the house, acid and old school loving Snuff Crew. He splits the title vocal into a new cut-up form that says, “Dance to this music” and reworks the track as seven wonderfully mechanical and metallic minutes of synth heavy grooves. Little stabs, crisp percussion and chilly drums all demand you dance.

This is a brilliant release that is sure to spark plenty of interest in the sorely overlooked collective that is NEP. 

What’s more, the first 100 copies bought directly from the label will include a bonus comic strip insert by Marvel collaborator Miroslav Mrva.

It's already been 5 years since the last Zombie Zombie album "Rituels d’un Nouveau Monde" has been released, after which the group has explored other territories by signing 2 film scores; "Loubia Hamra" by Narimane Mari and "Irréprochable" by Sébastien Marnier, as well as creating the music accompanying a contemporary circus show called "Slow Futur" by Martin Palisse and Elsa Guérin.
Wouldn't these beautiful parentheses make you want to return to the sources? After 10 years at Versatile Records, 2017 also marks the anniversary of the release of their first album "A Land for Renegades" in 2007, at the time considered to be one of the 10 best albums of the year according to Rough Trade.
This new opus "Livity" seems to plunge us into science fiction, with a cover designed by the mythic cartoonist Philippe Druillet, who is also the founder of the Métal Hurlant comic series. The title of the album is somewhat misleading, as one could think of a certain dub record made in Jamaica at the famous Compass Point studio at the Bahamas. If you didn't know, "livity" or "life force" is actually a Rastafarian concept. The record was finally recorded last winter in Paris, in a very short time frame. 7 tracks played live in 7 days, by Etienne Jaumet (synthesizers / rhythm box / metallophone / sax), Cosmic Neman (drums / vocals / sound effects), and Dr. Schonberg (percussion / electronics / trumpet), recorded at the Red Bull Studios by Thibaut Javoy and Jerome Caron, their 2 very competent engineers. To keep it in the family, the album was then mixed by another member of the Versatile stable, the mysterious and legendary DJ/producer I:Cube, done in the label's studio, Victor Studio.
On this album the principles that are dear to the group rest being respected, still as far as always from the standards of 'radio play'. A living kind of music, composed of long instrumental moments recorded with analog synthesizers and drum machines, accompanied by drums and percussion. But I:Cube's touch may bring that unique energy that one finds at the group's concerts; on certain titles like Livity (with its classic 808 drum kick club side, well ahead and bewitching with jungle sounds recorded in Laos) and especially on Hippocampe, which gives the impression of hearing an old school hip hop rhythm with the power of a metal band, having replaced their guitars by synthesizers: recommended to listen to in a convertible at the ring road.
The cinematic connotation is still strong, on titles like "Ils existent.." or "Acera", originally composed for ciné-concerts accompanying films by Jean Painlevé et Maurice Pialat. The energy of the beginning is still very present, as is - of course - the kraut inspiration. But it's also an album that takes new directions, like on “Looose”, which brings to mind the "Art Ensemble of Chicago", like a groove of James Chance in New York in the early 80's, with the free sax solos of Etienne Jaumet and Dr. Schonberg with the trumpet. The group also offers some slower and calmer titles, like "Heavy Meditation", as well as to explore new more experimental tracks in the line of French 70's groups such as Lard Free or Richard Pinhas, for example on the bonus track "Black Moon".

Berlin, the capital of Germany, has birthed a new sound: Berlin Afro House. Yes, you wouldn´t associate the techno focussed city with an African diasporic community nor with the rhythmical magic tracks that currently emerge from countries such as Angola, South Africa or Mozambique. Yet, a small but very well connected group of DJs and party promoters recently put Berlin on the international Afro House map.

With their monthly party-series such as “The Afro House Experience” or “Black Paper” the Berlin based DJs Mista Wallizz and Cambel Nomi have created a unique set of club nights that focus on the current club sounds emerging from across Africa that re-define the club sound of Berlin. Not being satisfied with their successful nights and increasing international DJ bookings, Wallizz and Cambel decided to start their own artist project and called it Freak de l´Afrique (The freak from Africa). The debut single is here now, and it´s called “Mama Eh”. In this club banger you hear the best of Afro House clashing with the melodies of UK grime and the grumpy attitude for which Berlin has become internationally known.

Cambel and Wallizz travel regularly to Luanda, a global capital for Afro House Music, and recently they also shot the video for “Mama eh” there together with the local dance community.

Of course “Mama Eh” is released on Man Recordings, Berlin´s only record label championing club sounds from the Southern hemisphere for more than a decade. Two remixes accompany the single release. First up is Jowaa from Accra in Ghana, the producer and DJ team consisting of Benjamin Lebrave of Akwaabaa Records and Accra allround talent Gafacci. The second remix dives into deep Afro house with X-Trio from Luanda, Angola who smoothed out the in your face sound of the original into tribal territories. A stunning debut track plus two hot remixes – Freak De L´Afrique are here to stay!

With an arsenal of stellar music releases already under his belt, Ponty Mython serves up the delicious “Pink Tango” EP for Futureboogie.

Having carved out a reputation for some of the finest cosmic house productions on labels like Omena, Dirt Crew and Quintessentials, the Lithuanian based producer delivers three new cuts on this release, which comes ably backed by a remix from Italian producer Fabrizio Mammarella.

On the title track, Alex Pletnev (Ponty Mython), goes for breezy synths and wandering melodies over a chugging mechanical beat and an FM style bassline, whilst Fabrizio Mammarella (Bear Funk/Les Disques De La Mort) toughens things up slightly on his remix, plunging into a darker sound aesthetic for a great reinterpretation of the original.

On “Time Spiral” an unhurried groove is laced with layer upon layer of meditative synths and percussive rolls for a fat dose of eighties soundtrack vibes, whilst EP closer, “Appreciate It While It's Not Too Late”, settles down to a head-nodding pace with funky bass and key melodies and live drum samples for a real earworm of a track.

'Opium Of The People’ was conceived and compiled by one of the residents at Opium, Vidmantas "V” Cepkauskas and is the club's statement after its growing international reputation. Featuring both local and international artists who have supported Opium's musical vision. The compilation is being released through @LeTempsPerduOnline 

This compilation has been one of the highlights of the year for us so far with many stand out tracks. One of which ‘ Patterns of An Idiot’  coming from one of the most promising producers to emerge from Tel Aviv in recent times, @Autarkic, who creates a typically funky, psychedelic  track with a distinctive retro flair.
