The arena-conquering duo glide from gritty rave to skyscraping arpeggios on RA.1000, a mix many years in the making.

A new name undeniably entered the pantheon of major electronic live acts over the past decade: next to Faithless, The Prodigy and The Chemical Brothers, now sit @feelmybicep.

The Belfast duo's music doesn't half reach for the stars: a melodic blend of ambient, breakbeat, trance and tech house, able to turn the biggest arenas into intimate affairs.

If anything, mainstream success, BRIT Award nominations and mammoth dance crossovers like "Glue" have only hardened Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar's resolve to keep innovating.

Their prized blog, running for nearly as long as the RA Podcast, regularly platforms upcoming artists. And you won't find many festival headliners releasing climate change-themed records with Indigenous artists, as they did recently on Takkuuk.

RA.1000 exists in that spirit. After many polite declines, and before a year off to usher in the next era, Bicep come through at the last: from dub techno and screwface breaks to São Paulo garage, before a tide of signature synths floods the zone. Stadium-sized intimacy at its finest.

Welcome to part 8 of our Discord Member's mix series. After a short hiatus for the Summer, we're back with an absolutely storming mix from Samuel Davey. 

Hey there! My names Sam and I’m a 24 year-old graphic design graduate from Sheffield. 

Having studied in Leeds for three years at an all-arts University, this experience allowed, and encouraged me to explore other creative disciplines alongside my degree, and I’d still probably class myself as a tourist creatively, always wanting to explore new ways of making things. I think it’s probably true for most creative people that exploring ideas through disciplines we don’t fully understand is often more exciting than through the one we’re most comfortable with. This is the general mindset behind most of my creative endeavours, and applies fittingly to this short mix.

I’ve always liked music, but wasn’t really until University that I began finding music I loved. Much of this discovery came through house parties as well as events at places like Wire, Old Red Bus Station, Mint etc. some of which are amongst my favourite venues I’ve been to. It was also around this time I discovered Bicep, having heard Glue at house parties during my first year, I didn’t know what the track was called, or who it was by, but was keen to explore that sound more. Once I’d got ‘Bicep’ I must’ve listened through their entire Spotify catalogue in about a week, many tracks (Just & Aura being my favourites) being on repeat for the next two years.

I’d still class Bicep as the start of my journey into electronic music, leading me deeper and deeper into the scene. With like Overmono, Four Tet, Floating Points, Joy O, Kelly Lee Owens, DjRUM etc. dominating my listening time. It was also the Bicep Printworks Live Recording which got me addicted to Live Music, another gateway into a different music experience. Towards the end of uni I began actively travelling to see live music and became obsessed with the experience. I feel blessed to live in a country with so many great venues, despite a worrying number of closures, especially Hope Works in my home city, there is such a wealth of electronic music history here. With seeing so much music live, I thought I’d give it a go myself, so bought a DDJ-400 in my second year and played a few house parties, with Glue being a staple in most sets. From this point onwards I’ve been mixing mini-sets in my room, building up to playing to more people.

I think this generally covers my journey to where I am now, very keen to carry on seeing and playing more music live, and hopefully start creating my own at some point in the future. I was also inspired to document some of the sets I’d been to, so started a mini blog [90.6FM] on my website, also very much inspired by the FMB blog.
