This beautiful song which has been churning around in my head on and off for decades was composed by Philippe Sarde (with lyrics by Jean-Loup Dabadie) in 1970 along with the rest of his score for Claude Sautet's "Les choses de la vie". Romy Schneider and Michel Piccoli who starred in the film also lent their voices to this song, which I believe was the first and last time the former ever did so. Some might argue that it was a wise decision :-/  

I was delighted that Anne agreed to take on the role of Romy in order to sing on my instrumental cover of "La chanson d'Hélène" whilst I filled in for Michel :-) As luck would have it she shares a similar subtle German accent and airiness in the voice, but with the added bonus of being simply incapable of singing flat :-) I think she did a brilliant job ...
