On December 2, a dope single of reworks by Hans Hass releases via The Outer Edge. You can now stream my contribution for this single. Please note that I did not “remix” the track, but it is “RE-MIXED”, which means there were several mixing adjustments to make it more suitable for DJs. The main drums were raised in volume, the guitar is a bit more mono, the psych part at the end got cleaned up and was made playable by adding drums to it, etc.. Special thanks to the mastering engineer Robert Wenzel! A smidgen of geographical context for you then. The Trans Mara District was a former, standalone region in the former Rift Valley province of Kenya before merging with the neighbouring Narok county in 2010. Its a place that Charif Megarbane - an über-talented Lebanese multi-instrumentalist - really bonded with. So much so that Trans-Mara Express has become one of his many monikers for dipping into the cultured pot that is East Africa.

Not an iota of 'express' or disposability seeps into 2, which was produced in Nairobi and tallies up as his 60th project to date. Instead, ounces of Somali funk, J Dilla off-kilter hip-hop and mbira are masterfully ladled into its every nook. Charif also adds fresh meaning to the term one man band, composing and mixing the album with a myriad of instruments being plucked, scratched and tapped: 6 string electric guitar, electric bass, double bass, MPC and nyatiti all become his play things at some point during the 21-tracker.

"Every Frame A Painting" is blissful, summer-coated stuff; kickstarted by contagiously foot-shifting melody before tobogganing into languid, reverb-drenched lounge territory. It's instrumental hip-hop with all the tasteful snippets of the equatorial region.

It's out via Hot Record Société digitally and 50 copies on cassette.

‘Dirty Girls’ is a reflection of my roots and inspirations that lie deep within jazz, trip-hop, synthwave and soulful music.

The track explores gender and sexuality through hip hop lyricism. Sexuality is a natural occurrence while gender is a social construct. Our society's gender-based morals expect women to conceal or isolate sexuality in our lives. In relation to slut-shaming, the Madonna-Whore dichotomy explains the polarised perception of women as either “good,” chaste, and pure Madonna’s or as “bad", sexual and tainted creatures deserving blame. In Dirty Girls, I denounce this gender-biased morality that prevents us from accepting women as fully-fledged, sexual humans.

The single alludes to deeper meanings. I use my lyrical dexterity to break down my worldview, with an eloquent and thought-provoking critique of topics such as slut-shaming, gender-based morals and the media’s role in normalising the misrepresentation of women. On ‘Dirty Girls’, I reclaim the definition of “Dirty”, to demonstrate that talking about sex and sexuality does not affect who I am as a woman, my credibility or my intellectual ability. 

On ‘Dirty Girls’, I surrounded myself with talented musicians leading the lines on Trombone (Laura Impallomeni), Piano (Maria Graspa) and Drums (Shakira Malkani) and Bass (John Wright). Ultimately, ‘Dirty Girls’ is a tool to push the boundaries of gender and genre, inspiring conversation within the hip-hop and wider music communities, and challenging the status quo.
