Every year I do an improvisation on the anniversary of my dad's passing. This time around, I did two.

I am a little late this year, as recording challenges abound in my current living situation. A northwest wind assures that the planes from Logan intl. periodically take off in my direction. This resulted in an altogether different and more ambient piece on the first attempt ('northwest').

I recorded a second piece a few days later when the wind shifted to the southeast and the planes subsided. It closer reflects my initial impulse for something more raw and minimal. I have been gradually introducing more space and silence in my playing and I think that comes out in this piece. There was also a conscious effort in both pieces to avert my tendency to always crescendo into these more intense sections. This still happens in a sense, but conversely, many passages build up to moments of refrain or quiet reserve.

So, in stark sonic contrast to "Fourteen Years Passed (northwest)," this is an alternative improvisation in honor of the fourteenth year of my dad's passing and the tenth anniversary since I started this project.

After missing my first 2 shows due to car troubles on the way in, this happened to be my first show for the week, and ironically was the evening that the holy rains began to bless the desert. In fact, during this set we had some drizzles rain down, and you can find me incorporate a playful tune speaking to that moment in this set 😊 
I have the fondest memories from this night, and the lovely vibe this camp curated for us all.

DJ Johnny Blue @ Esoteric Festival 2024, Australia

It would be difficult to exaggerate Angelo Badalamenti’s contribution to David Lynch’s body of work. Unlike other director/ composer teams like Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herman or Stephen Spielberg and John Williams, where the music was written to existing film, this collaboration began when the stories were still part of Lynch’s meditations. Like a patient to a therapist, Lynch would describe moods and feelings, dramatic through-lines that were yet to be connected, with Badalamenti improvising a musical response. This might explain how the music feels so integrated within the films, seeming to know what transpired behind the white picket fences in the suburbs of Blue Velvet, or between the owls in the forest surrounding Twin Peaks.

Theirs was a perfect pairing of two men who were equal parts twins and opposites: Badalamenti found life in Lynch’s imagination, in turn, the auteur found a welcome restraint in the composer’s formality. The result is a union forged so seamlessly that it becomes impossible to determine where one of them stops and the other begins. The following is a mix of collaborations between the two, as well as selected pieces of pre-recorded music from Lynch’s films, without which some of Badalamenti’s efforts might feel incomplete.
