A beautifully warm, diverse and wiggly mix from Oakland, California based Wonja (@wonj). Alongside being a talented dj & avid record collector, Wonja makes up one half of Motoko & Myers with her partner Dan. 

I'm constantly impressed by the wide-spanning range of genres, styles and moods that make up Wonja's mix catalogue - always new and always fresh.  For this mix, she's put together a playful and eclectic mix of glitch, groove and interesting soundscapes.

Lindsey Wang, the mind behind Polygonia, is a versatile musician and artist based in Munich, Germany. A long time before her electronic music journey began, she explored the realms of several acoustic instruments intensively. This skill combined with studies of various other art forms, inspired the artist to translate her understanding of rhythm, composition and experimentalism into the digital
music language.

Her sound identity is driven by a mystic, deep and organic character which is enriched with acoustic elements built into the genres of deep techno, downtempo and ambient.
Polygonia already released her music on several labels like Lowless, Jazz-o- Tech, On Board Music, Lett Records, Alexandar and more. She expresses herself in various ways through Live- and DJ-Sets. Her audio color palette covers a huge spectrum from calm and harmonic sounds to polyrhythmic dark grooves.

Together with Dycide and MTRL she founded the ambient and deep techno label
IO.

Next up in our Mix Series is Sweden-born, and Berlin-based DJ Philippa Pacho. Pacho is the co-founder of Positive Source, a label started with Blue Hour, focusing on progressive artists while paying homage to our roots in early club culture.

The mix for is a live recording from Vault Sessions, BRET Amsterdam from February 26th, featuring energetic and groovy techno mixed in mixed super seamlessy and skillfully.

(@xenianogravity) Xenia Nanou regularly presents her own show on Athens Movement Radio. In addition, the native Greek is currently revitalizing the techno scene of Vienna with her music. While Polyxena was the lover of Achill, she devotes a lot of time and passion to acid, electro and breakbeat as Polyxene. With the experience of a sound engineer she also has the skills to prod the dancefloors with her style. We are very happy to have her on Hypress. It's almost like we were just waiting for her to bring the trademark sound of our label together in one mix. Acid meets Leftfield. Bass meets techno.

Physical Therapy has as many vibes as he does aliases. You never really know what you're going to get from his sets—you can probably count on a bit of UK garage and some breakbeats, but beyond that, it's a free-for-all. He's gone through phases ranging from DIY pop edits to grayscale Berlin techno to all the fantastic and unpredictable music on his label Allergy Season to his latest EP of vocal-heavy 2-step tracks, part of a recent move towards more emotional dance music that he says captures his "twee" side. If there's anyone that truly believes in the power of crying on the dance floor, it's him. 

He's an expert at themed mixes, pulling together loosely categorized sections of his vast and sometimes hilarious collection. (Other sets, like his revered Honcho Campout recording, are gloriously all over the place.) But for his RA Podcast he's gone straight for the dance floor, choosing the kind of thing he would play at a club rather than one of his NTS sets. It's typically era-spanning and adventurous, yet woven together with an expert touch, running from an underrated Texas dubstep label (Pushing Red) to old-school IDM to vintage Miss Kittin and even an obscure (or just forgotten) turn-of-the-millennium cover of "How Soon Is Now" that would only really sound right in his hands.

Hailing from Granada and now based in Berlin, acidheaven (@acidheavenn)delivers amazing breakbeats, garage, and acid. Her mixes are characterized by styles such as ghetto, electro-bass, and broken rhythms accompanied by vocals ranging from 90s r&b to dossier pop. In her sessions, you will also find sounds like acid, trance, or techno beats. Her style is eclectic and wide-ranging, going from nostalgic melodies to hardcore club stompers and back again.

Coco Cobra (@cococobra) has been DJing since 2019. During the pandemic she navigated herself through various influences and tries to combine crisp breaks, heavy bass and fast paced rhythms with a lot of feeling into their sets. Coco Cobra is also a member of the club and DJ collective, soft spot, which was founded in 2019 by queers and FLINTAs in Hanover, Germany and blend experimental, electronic sounds with queer-feminist politics in and outside of the club.

Scuffed Recordings with Marshall Applewhite, Young Muscle & Gag Reflex - 30 December 2022

Gag Reflex's moniker is an apt embodiment of her musical output. It's propulsive; pushing you forward then pulling you back, dragging you under then spitting you out.

It's down to the intriguing spread of influences that fuel the US-born, Berlin-based producer and DJ's work. While there's nods to percussive noughties techno, classic rave and early UK dubstep in there, you'll hear echoes of her formative love of punk bands like Crass and The KLF bubbling underneath the surface too.

As a DJ she's made quite the name for herself in the US, holding residencies in Portland and San Francisco, as well as her former home of Seattle, where she ran transfeminist club night BLOOM: a space to inspire connection, catharsis and experimentation within the local scene and beyond.

The connections that she's made have led to releases on international labels like Scuffed Recordings, Violet's naivety sub-label and, most recently, on the former's newly minted sister label Angel with her Lush EP, which drops on 21st April.

In the lead up to the release she takes the controls of this week's Shine A Light On mix with a blend of murky, percussive and weighty sonics for the heads down and the hands up crew...

Hot on the heels of the Summer solstice, tonight's full moon catches us at an apex of abundance. Gilding the moment with music is Gag Reflex, who's woven together a mix brimming with droney, pensive intensity, and interspersed with percussive fervour. An incantation to the earth as the moon waxes into Capricorn; a reminder of how indebted we are to its seasonal bounties.
