Australia’s Soul Wun is a young skater making beautiful sun soaked deep house jams, previously for the likes of 13th Hour, House Cookin’, Feedasoul, Clipp.art and of course SlothBoogie where he returns here following his appearance on the first ‘Dancing With Friends’ compilation.

Opening the release is ‘Piero’s Strings’, merging twinkly piano lines and cinematic strings with winding bass grooves and organic drums. ‘Japan Theme’ follows next, fusing hazy brass licks, a walking bass line and jazz keys with a swinging drum groove and spoken word Japanese samples.

Opening the B-side of the release is ‘Lily Flower (Adele)’, laying focus on an amalgamation of warm piano tones, a swinging rhythm and plucked bass tones throughout. ‘Sun Lady Statement’ is up next, taking things in a more acid jazz direction via broken percussion, psychedelic guitar licks and hypnotic, poetic vocal chants.

Lastly to round out the release Houseum and Axe On Wax artist Jesse Bru delivers his twist on 'Lily Flower (Adele)’, bringing a more upfront House aesthetic to the table courtesy of shuffled drums and driving low end, while the original’s ethereal textures ebb and flow within.

Swedish label Omena's latest signing is an auspicious one - especially if this release is any indication. Coming courtesy of little-known British producer Books, the Sour Grapes EP is indicative of the label’s undoubted penchant for groove-soaked gems. Featuring three originals as well as a fittingly astute remix from one of 2017’s best breakthrough artists, Laurence Guy, this is an EP that’s stuffed with good-time party vibes throughout.

The head honcho’s over at Better Listen Records have been on a short hiatus to get their heads together and figure out the future direction of the label. Whilst we’ve missed picking up a hot BLR release every couple of months, if this new EP from Swede Dorsi Plantar is anything to go by, it’s been worth it.
 
This is only the second full EP from Dorsi and the guys at BLR felt it right to bring him back for the label’s first repeat of an artist. Tack Farsan (“Thanks Dad”) is the first of four classy productions and it’s vintage BLR. Cleverly-freaked city pop samples surround a driving groove and every now and then we’re treated to a cool as hell vocal snip. It’s light, it’s summery, it gets us dancing. It’s fucking great. Welcome back BLR.

The second release in Teen Daze's "Reality Refresh" series continues down the path that the first one set up: meditative rhythms give way to soft grooves; field recordings and nature sounds blend into gentle melodies and textures.

Meditation, the first track, sets the tone perfectly, as its dancing percussion opens up into a vast, lush atmosphere, all tethered by a pulsing kick drum. Oskar's Groove is the groover (as the title might imply) of the bunch, nodding to boogie and mid-tempo disco sounds from the early 80s. Some people might describe it as "light & funky". New Destination proceeds down a more introspective path, again diving deep into hypnotic percussion and hand drums; a hazy, swelling whirlwind of synthesized and natural sounds. Finally, we reach Oskar's Lullaby, the come-down after the build up of New Destination, easing us out of this release with its gently picked guitars and looping drum machine. There's some serious emotion in this one; a beautiful send off.
Reality Refresh 2 was recorded by Jamison Isaak during the month of March 2020. It was mastered by Nik Kozub.

Tom Jarmey releases his debut album for Lobster Theremin sub-label Distant Horizons (formally known as Distant Hawaii) with the beautifully serene ‘Amber Glass’ LP.

On Amber Glass, Jarmey draws on influences from ambient, house, breakbeat and techno, combining dusty drum sequences on top of cosmic synth patterns and classic, warm, tape-driven production. It’s a rare treat in the post-rave, home-listening dance spectrum and showcases a knack for brooding, laid-back grooves as well as a killer melody and rhythm. Chock full of breaks, bubbling electronica, deep diving tones and emotional textures, the album is a glimpse into the work of a rising producer, but one who nonetheless sounds comfortably in their prime.

Jarmey seamlessly blends breathtaking soundscapes, luscious vocals and soaring synth hooks on this debut long play following releases for 13th Hour, Shadow City and R.A.N.D. The LP sets the tone for future excursions on Lobster from the versatile Manchester-based producer.

Long-time musical collaborator and saxophonist, Ed Hodge, joins Jarmey for a clutch of tracks on this project, with Hodge performing sax on both ‘Bees In Meadow’ and ‘Deeper Pacific’. Amber Glass features the stunning artwork of London based designer CMDP.
