What the heck is Slowcore?

When Techno and Hardcore gained traction in the 90s, there was the tendency for the sound to get more heavy and dirty on the one side, and more frantic and speedy on the other side; tracks at 160 BPM, 180 BPM, soon at over 200+ BPM came popping out; until eventually genres such as Terror and Speedcore arose and you had tracks clocking at 800 bpm in 1998. And, after the millenium, genres such as Splittercore and Extratone became popular that took the speed to even more insane levels.

But after a while, an evolution towards the opposite direction took place, too; starting in genres such as Industrial Hardcore and Doomcore, some artists began to produce slower and slower tracks; this soon gave birth to the phenomenon known as "Slowcore". Tracks below 100 BPM, or 80 BPM, or 60 BPM, or even at 1 bpm (and slower?). Slowcore even has its own sub styles by now, such as Funeral Doomcore for very slow tracks, or Hadal Doomcore for even much, much slower tracks (think 1-16 BPM).

When exactly a track does enter the "Slowcore" realm is open to dispute. For this compilation we used the definiton: 125 BPM or slower (with one exception!).

So we called out for producers to turn in their Slowcore tracks for this compilation, and the response was awesome. We have something from all realms of slower Hardcore here, 120 BPM tracks, 60 BPM, 4 BPM... Industrial inspired sounds, Doomed sounds, slow Dancefloor stompers, Dark Ambient influences, Death Metal, odd experiments... everything you can wish for.

And, while listening to the tracks, we almost got the impression that there was a historic error in the development of Hardcore Techno: these slow tracks sound so natural and kicking, the slow drums underline the dark moods and atmospheres so perfect, maybe Hardcore had always been ment to be produced at half the speed, or even much less!

Hernán Ortega A.K.A Anatta, es un dj y Productor chileno, estrechamente influenciado por el Hard dance, precisamente por estilos como  Hardcore, Crossbred, Breakcore y Techno extremo; el cual se caracteriza por viajes psico náuticos catárticos de alta intensidad, cargados de sonoridades estridentes muy ligadas al Death Metal, Djent, Deathcore y Blackmetal, estilos musicales que formaron parte importante de su trayecto musical desde la infancia.


En este viaje sonoro, de ya casi 4 años, ha tenido la oportunidad de presentarse en diversos escenarios y ciudades del país, como: Iquique (Sacramentum), La Serena (Technique), Santiago (Espacio 93/ Psiquiátrico), Curicó (Equis), Concepción (Sesiones Raras), Pucón (Technoise), Osorno (Techno Sur), Puerto Montt (Festival Moon Rave) y Coyhaique (Patagonia Ravers).


Hasta la fecha, cuenta con un lanzamiento oficial en el primer V.A del sello Italiano “La Creazione”, donde participó junto a importantes exponente emergentes de la escena techno/hardtechno Europea, como son Valerio innorta, Hatelove, Bermind, Neagles y David Cortese, entre otros.


Desde hace 2 años cuenta con residencia en la radio Fnoob Techno de U.K, donde presenta junto a su colega Dkstle, su podcast mensual llamado: “The Outsiders”.


Cuenta con diversos podcast publicados por importantes sellos/Colectivos como: Clube Dos Lenhadores (Brasil), Rave Session (Rusia), Iwfta y Extortion Sounds (Australia), Música Nómada (España) y Mass London (Inglaterra).


Actualmente es miembro del colectivo nacional”Techno Passagier”.

This is a collection of new and old tracks in the Slowcore genre; sometimes close to Techno, sometimes close to Hardcore, sometimes close to relentless noize. 
The central piece here is "Open Your Mind To Slowcore", an exclusive track in both a smol and yuge mix, which tries to be a new anthem for the young Slowcore movement.

@noahstas is the moniker of Bence Barta visual artist, member of the art collective MŰTŐ.

Black bile is a bodily fluid - one among the four Hippocratic humors (together with blood, yellow bile, phlegm). In this theory the imbalance of these fluids could cause illness and disease: black bile was considered to be responsible for depression and melancholy.

The album is centered around self-repression: the disturbing mental states which indicate unsolved tension in one’s psyche, the hopeless urge to control these torturing inner dynamics, in vain. Exhausted in this process the subject dissociates and collapses. Then, by mobilizing a significant amount of willpower the psyche is ready to stand up from the breakdown - only to repeat the cycle.

The material was recorded live at one take during the lockdown in an empty art space - it was captured using tape loops, drum machines, analog synths, lots of feedback and a microphone to give it a spatial atmosphere.
