Having tapped Guy Andrews for our 28th Truancy Volume in 2011 on the brink of his first Hemlock release, we've been following his career closely and excitedly. This looks to begin a new chapter with the release of his debut album Our Spaces, which shows his maturity as a producer. Produced over a period of two years during a time of reinvention, the album sees Andrews refocusing his style and his approach to production while also taking in influence from break-beat and industrial, to softer touches of electronica. The album finds a home on Fabric's Houndstooth, whose recent releases from Snow Ghosts and Throwing Snow help set the tone for the sort of compositions and experimentation the album deals with. We were kindly asked to pick one of the tracks for an online premiere and having caught the private live album show at Fabric back in November, it was 'Spirit Ritual' that we felt captured the emotional and personal embodiment that Andrews talks about below, the most.

“The new album really encapsulates all my influences and production experiments, and fuses them together. I wrote the album without a label in mind, and when it was done Houndstooth just seemed like the absolute perfect fit. They’ve really helped me complete the aesthetic and put out a record I’m truly proud of. It’s different to what I’ve put out before, but I’m more confident that this work embodies much more emotion and personality than I’ve ever previously been able to express in my music.”

"Convivium" is Mario Diaz de Leon's third album under his ONEIROGEN alias, and follows the "Plenitude" EP, released in 2015. It was developed over a period of two and a half years, primarily through live performance in the metal and noise underground of NYC. Like its predecessor, the album's core instrumentation is an array of hypnotic synthesizer riffs, pummeling percussion, distorted vocals, and surging noise. With "Convivum", Diaz de Leon has crafted a powerful and singular work of heavy electronic music.

A charged sense of anticipation permeates the music, sustaining tension and mystery through spans of repetition and moments of rupture. The songs build towards hedonistic climaxes, which yield to sparse, expansive passages in which every sonic detail is vividly heard. Inspired in part by Bataille's "Erotism", which connects the "rupture of boundaries" common to sex, mystical ecstasy and ritual sacrifice, as well as the work of psychologist Stanislov Grof on the impacts of birth trauma on the human psyche, "Convivium" is an incantatory journey through primal and dark creative forces.

The artistic output of Mario Diaz de Leon spans a wide range. In addition to his work as Oneirogen, he is highly active as a composer of modern classical music (with a 2016 commission from the LA Philharmonic and releases on Tzadik and Denovali), and is the frontman of Luminous Vault, his recently formed death metal band. Envisioning all of his activity as part of a spiritual practice, he considers Oneirogen to be the most personal side of his work.

"It's just me producing everything, and of course I perform it alone as well." he explains. "Each album is a kind of personal trial or rite of passage. As someone who also works in the classical tradition, I think of them as my symphonies. Its a project where i'm open to all my influences, and i'm entering into mystery and the unknown, battling to carve essences out of formlessness."

Lapsus Records proudly presents the third release in its “Perennial” series, dedicated to reissuing contemporary electronica classics from established artists. 

The third release is from Christopher Scott Leary, who over the last two decades has produced a plethora of material under his pseudonym, Ochre. 2019 marks 15 years since the original release of “A Midsummer Nice Dream” in 2004; on British label Toytronic, which pushed Leary to the forefront of the experimental electronic music sphere. To celebrate the releases’ fifteenth anniversary, Lapsus Records will reissue a special collector’s edition of this IDM classic in the form of a double tri-colour vinyl release, re-mastered by John McCaig (panicStudios). It will also include a full-colour print of the new artwork, re-designed by Portland (Oregon) illustrator Nathaniel Reeves, who has worked alongside Ochre for almost a ten years. 

This special deluxe reissue entitled “A Midsummer Nice Dream (15th Anniversary Edition)“, features unreleased material from the same period and includes three bonus tracks on its vinyl version, six on its digital version, making it a truly unique release. It therefore offers a golden opportunity to rediscover an album that navigates through several genre domains such as ambient, IDM and experimental electronica in its purest form, stylistically reminiscent of the likes of Autechre, conveying a sound considerably ahead of its time. In its entirety “A Midsummer Nice Dream” is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable electronica glitch albums to be released in the 2000s, when the genre experienced its zenith, largely thanks to the advent of significant breakthroughs in digital production tools.
