Leaders of the new generation and purveyors of dancefloor chaos Serum, Voltage and Bladerunner return to the frontline of drum & bass with their debut, self-titled album ‘Kings Of The Rollers’. Whilst each has their own high-grade production style, these three royals have managed to create a sum greater than their parts, as they steamroll through all the rules to deliver an absolute bruiser of an LP.

Across seventeen tracks expect up-front rollers, techy 2-step beats and pure knockout D+B bangers, complemented with slick jazzy numbers and a wide variety of vocal-lead tracks. It’s safe to say they've lived up to the hype with their most dynamic and diverse release to date.

Amongst the carnage highlights include ‘You Got Me’. A towering tear-out beast ladened with thrashing amens and a thundering bassline that’s ready to push every speaker to it’s limits. Having survived the treacherous path that now lay behind them, a group of ardent adventurers found themselves before the gates of a great temple, shrouded in mists atop the highest peak in their land. From within rang out a titanic voice that shook the earth with its every word, permeating the very souls of those who stood before the gate. “Hear me, supplicants to this temple” rang its initial call, “Know that you tread upon the grounds of Snake Monastery, and that you shall face many tests and trials should you seek to proceed in whatever quest hath brought you here. You now face the LAVA RUN, and should you hope to continue you must prove your worth.” These words the voice left to echo throughout the mountain peaks as the adventurers set to the task before with utmost resolve. Utilizing every ounce of their combined might, they heaved open the doors to the great temple, which shuddered open to reveal a most terrifying sight. Approaching unstoppably towards them was a boulder of titanic size, seemingly unseated from its pedestal by the gate’s monumental motion. With practiced synchronicity the adventurers sprang into action, preparing to meet the boulder head on in the midst of its fast approaching onslaught. Yet, at the last moment before their inevitable collision, one amongst the adventurers raised a single fist and struck with all of their might at the boulder’s core. With nary a second remaining before it would have crushed the party beneath its incomprehensible mass, the boulder was reduced to naught but dust, and the path forwards through the temple lay open. “It seems you are indeed of the strength to continue,” came the voice from within “but brawn alone will not grant you admittance to the Snake Monastery’s inner sanctum. Continue further, if you are truly worthy, and face the next trial!”

2019 #13: Kolt Siewerts - Bassfuttermix

Technique Recordings head-honcho’s @DrumsoundandBasslineSmith have had a massive year; adding to this their remix of @KennyKen’s iconic track “Everyman” and they’re looking to continue their explosive takeover of 2019. 

War on Silence debuted to the drum and bass scene in November 2018 and since this point they’ve had a consistent stream of stellar releases - spearheading outputs from the likes of Heist, Funtcase, Malux, Teddy Killerz, its creator Crissy Criss and many more. And following their forthcoming release, a remix from Drumsound & Bassline Smith, it’s certain to say they won’t be slowing down with their high calibre flow of records.

With the original legendary track also featuring DRS (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), it was first dropped in 1994, before being reworked by legends such as Kenny Ken himself, Benny Page, DJ Monk as well as a host of other taste making names over the years. Each time, the benchmark has been set even higher from the original; every artist has added their own signature palette with every version. Boasting of 24 years of history, the remix criterion is once again about to be brought through a new lens, although this time by Drumsound & Bassline Smith who add their own signature flavours along with the 2019 jungle drum and bass texture.

When Drumsound & Bassline Smith take on Kenny Ken’s “Everyman” you can instantly detect their moniker, peddling a different vibe whilst infusing a high level of energy, something which can be witnessed throughout their live sets. The junglist vocals offer the original warmth to the track, setting it up to face the twisting of its drop. It’s first breakdown will propel its listener across any dancefloor and with each almighty roar, it flourishes with the heavyweight crisp bass credentials Drumsound & Bassline Smith have become renowned for. 

It’s a remix perfect enough to deliver to the treasury of releases War on Silence have been building since their launch, as well as a remix which presents another stunning addition to the collection of revamps which have been 24 years in the making.

The lights went out. That’s what happened first. The portal we had opened required more power than we anticipated to maintain, and it plunged our laboratory into darkness, shutting down our camera feeds and security countermeasures. The portal closed quickly afterwards, and thus three of us grabbed flashlights in order to restart the generator. We were just opening the door from the lab when I heard it. An awful skittering sound, like bone on metal, broken into a hundred granular steps which ended as abruptly as they had begun. We all stopped to listen, but found only silence awaiting our ears. One of our trio swore they had seen something move on the edge of their vision, but myself and the other dismissed their suspicion. The portal had only been open for mere seconds: nothing could have gotten through unless it had been waiting on the other side. We turned our flashlights back to the hallway, and that was when the being struck. There, in the beam of my colleague’s torch, I saw but for an instant the most hideous creature I have ever laid my eyes upon. Its spindly legs, protruding spine, and trunk like orifice were held together by a body that seemed to mock any semblance of natural form. As the ray of light washed over it, it leapt at incredible speed directly towards my colleague, attaching that horrible trunk to his mouth as he screamed briefly in horror before dropping to the floor, drained of all life that had been within him but a moment ago. Terrified, I ran, dropping my flashlight behind me, and it was well that I did. For somehow as I saw it, a name came to mind, a name that revealed the truth of its kind. Drawn to the light, they’ll take your life as they skitter, for such is the nature of that otherworldly FLICKER.

CLASHTONE return to the EATBRAIN label for their latest single, which follows their debut Ninja Scroll EP and single “Pretender” from the label’s Divergence II compilation with similar cinematic flair. Composed within the multiple minds of the mysterious supergroup, FLICKER hones an amalgam of influences into a razor sharp single slice of dancefloor oriented drum & bass, introducing a new variety of monster into the ever-growing EATBRAIN horde.

Featuring four brand new selections from Burr Oak, their forthcoming ‘Feel the Truth’ EP once again solidifies why the duo were brought into the Trendkill imprint. Title-track ‘Feel the Truth’ opens the EP and begins with a deceptive intro, one which lulls you into a false sense of security before building into an almighty first breakdown. ‘Gokui’ follows a similarly epic soundscape, with static like bass slabs underpinned by rising synthesis, slowly dropping you into the magnetic drums of Burr Oak. ‘Carotide’ then begins with rhythmic drum, with a robotic, ominous spoken word sample taking you out into the deep. Soon your submerged by the track’s weight. Sliced and diced hooks cut through the chaos and they take you along for the ride. ‘All Alone’ is the final offering and its one which further highlights the complexity of Burr Oak’s skills. With strung harmonies opening up its first sequence, it’s a rolling freight train of chaotic patterns, one dipping back and forth between its growling underbelly.

Together these tracks present another climatic release from Burr Oak. They’re unafraid to cut open their repertoire and prove they’re a force to be reckoned with. One that Prolix and Trendkill have taken notice of.
