This year marks the 30th anniversary of Napalm Death’s infamous Scum album.  At the time of its creation, Punk had already burned itself out but the ethos had been etched into the worldview of a large proportion of disaffected youth. The band preached a message of personal and social responsibility, they shouted their vision of an anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian society from the stage and implored their fans to start putting on their own gigs and set up record labels in their bedroom. Fans started tape labels and edited their own fanzines. The overarching message was to Do. It. Yourself.

This poignant anniversary offers a moment to explore Punk/DIY culture and its effectiveness for social change. 30 years on, how does the ethos translate to music and art today? What impact does anger in art have, if any? Who uses this anger and why?

Panelists include journalist Jamie Thomson, author of ‘How punk changed cities – and vice versa’ for the Guardian, Beirut based Khyam Allami of Nawa Recordings "For art/culture to move you it needs to be risky and fearless, but I believe that fearlessness is a privilege”, London based black feminist punk band Big Joanie, “I don’t think you can be a woman and not be political. I don’t think you can be a black woman and not be political. Your body is a political force” and Napalm Death co-founder Nicholas Bullen. Chaired by Nancy Beenie (BBC Radio 3)

Heading from Oslo straight to the breakfast club Crussen wakes anybody with his heavy trumpet and eponymous tune ‘Breakfast in the Hut‘ that is part of
Underyourskin‘s latest four tracker by the Norwegian. Grooving on a downtempo pace delightfully playing with chimes that alternate and merge with different synth patterns Crussen creates the cereals for a strong day and night. Viken Arman abstracts the original synths and raises the beats per minute to recreate a deepish and summerish remix anthem with a subtile melancholy. The EPs second and highly anticipated track ‘The Lambert Interpretation‘ is a melodical masterpiece combining piano and guitar elements smoothly before sweeping one into different spheres. Crussen‘s reinterpretation of the original is enriched with a choir like vocal that pours down all the emotions on the dance floor and hunts one throughout the night.

Now settled in fertile east London, Snapped Ankles maintain the feral energy of the forest. Fight or flight. Primal motorik rhythms, the rush of white noise and post-punk angles; an aural onslaught played out on homemade log synths, electrified guitars and sticks beating hell on taut animal skin.

Snapped Ankles have flourished in the sub-tropical climes of warehouse and squat parties, moving onto performance art collaborations with filmmakers and shows in unlikely locations such as barber shops, games arcade and the forests they once called home. They plough a singular furrow at improbable angles. The woodwose have discovered electricity and they’re not afraid to use it.

Teaming up with gun up 'n' coming producer Tobiahs Fakhri and getting killer chorus featuring 14 year old Kian Brownfield on the hook. Fresh from providing Futureboogie’s pivotal 50th release back in March, Christophe leads the charge on the label’s annual Summer Riot compilation EP, now on its sixth installment.  On “West Side Critters”, a bold and brooding kick drum that the early acid pioneers would be proud of, tethers a malleable acid bassline to its stable pattern, whilst incessant cow bells, distant tom hits and metallic piano chords pep up the production for another class track from Christophe. The Mexican duo, Zombies In Miami, have impressed for labels like Love On The Rocks and Correspondent over the years, and bring their own brand of spiritual dance to the Summer Riot party.  A collage of colour erupts on “The Legends Of The Hidden Temple” premiered here, with sitars, guitars, vocals and synths all weaving their magic over a chugging house beat with a bubbling acid underbelly. Formerly one half of previous FBR recording artists, Lizards, Lee Forster teams up with Ollie Warriner (Tunnyl Records) for a their new Forriner project, contributing the excellent “Spero” to the comp. Warming pads glide over lazy percussive beats, as a piano motif holds the breakdown before kickstarting the track to its glorious groovy finale. Bringing the Summer Riot VI to a cosmically charged ending, Yuki Tosaya channels the spirits of 1990’s ambient house in a superb track titled “Acid Dawn Breaks”.  Chugging, transcendental house at its finest, Tosaya teases 303s, piano riffs and cascading synths in a production that will no doubt see the break of dawn at many gatherings for a good while to come.

Never Let Me Go (Cover Feat. Florence Welch)

Seven months ago the band Lemonade shared with the world their song "Neptune". It's a wonderful pop song, with wonderful melodies and connectable / perfect lyrics. As I tend to do with most songs I hear and love. I covered it, as an exercise usually only for myself, but this time I sent it to the band.
At the time I loved the lyrics, but right now seven months later... i fully appreciate the lyrics, so in the absence of new Blood Orange materiel... here it is.
