Arriving hard on the heels of his Lobster Theremin debut, Swiss-born, Berlin based techno artist Chlär prepares the first ever release of Welcome to the Loop World with four devastating cuts of furious and fun pounding rhythms.
‘It’s a Common Thing’ is as subdued as it is raw; an unapologetically in-your-face energy with emo-vocal samples and tense, swirling sonics that allow no room for rest. ‘The Tribe’ begins with high-filter kick and wooden instrumentation that quickly evolves into a full-scale bassfest; not for the faint-hearted.
The manipulated synth-strings of ‘Staying True’ make for a contemporary-classical take on the typically black-and-white techno format, creating something new and exciting that is distinctively Chlär, before ‘Right Mood Supplier’ swaps harsh noise for something a little more progressive; wriggling basslines and jump-up-and-down energy creating something punchy and fun.

Abnormal is the sound of DJ JM ratcheting it up a notch, both in production-value and musical creativity. The title itself stands as a compact explainer of DJ JM’s constant sonic assignment – Abnormal consolidates years of JM’s work to keep club music weird and unexpected. Retaining the chunky percussion and quick-stepping rhythms he built his name on, the EP also contains intricate, cleverly designed sound-beds, and extends the menacing electro-techno swagger DJ JM began exploring on his previous No Days Off and Squash EPs.

Preferring synths over samples, Abnormal is filled with sudden bursts of psychedelic melody, off-kilter audio-manipulations and bubbling acid-trip basslines. The tracks also have a subtle but distinctly Lithuanian edge, drawing influence from the iterative, morphing patterns of the folk symbols and insignia carved into the remains of ancient settlements near Vilnius.

To this end, everyone at Turbo is grateful beyond words that venerable veteran’s veterans Extrawelt are bringing the full bore of their two decades’ experience to bear on this slice of genre-defiling excellence. The German due open with the thorax-pummeling EBM of the title track, followed up by the angry electro of “Angry Elektro.” And if you think the EP lets up from there, keep listening to find out just how wrong what you think is, because the next track is called “Angry Halibut” and sounds exactly what you’re terrified that sounds like. Grindmaster culminates with the goalie-on-acid-fantasy acid banger “Save City” and bottomless warehouse trip-soundtrack “Flunk.” 

Those of you who choose not to support your local record store will be rewarded accordingly, as Extrawelt’s own “Drop Outs in Heaven Remix” of “Flunk” is yours as a digital exclusive. We have no real problem with vinyl lovers but they should probably come to terms with the fact that digital music - and by extension, digital exclusives - is perhaps the defining trend of 2024.
