Sofa Beats presents Sofacast 01 - The Oddness

Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Podcast Series,

The Oddness is the project of Melbourne producer and performer Warwick Ferguson. The sound of the Oddness is Downtempo yet energetic, with punchy tribal drums and huge bass lines wrapped around the long slow burning structures of progressive house.

The Oddness Launched his live set in 2018 and has since performed at some of Australia’s premium festivals including Rainbow Serpent, Let Them Eat Cake and ChiWowWah Town. The set is full of improvisation and can go anywhere from laidback and melancholy through to a chunky, driving gut punch. Recently he has been joined by Multi Instrumentalists Dylan Jarred and Timmus, performing as a 3-piece band.

His first release came in early 2018 on Uone’s label Beat & Path with a huge remix from Electronic music legend Adam Freeland, quickly followed his debut album ‘Culmination’ on Griff’s new imprint Corymbia Recordings. 2019/20 saw a string of releases and remixes for labels Pipe & Pochet, SolSelectas, Shango Records, LNDKHN and Sofa Beats, as well as remixing Satin Jackets huge hit Automatic for Eskimo Recordings.

A European tour was booked for 2020 including Boom, Noisily and Vibronica festivals, but was cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation. This led to some serious studio time culminating in his second album ‘Observations as a Stranger’ out now on Beat & Path.

Music consumes a big part of my life, from writing tracks, collaborating with singers and musicians, preparing for gigs, running my record label Smash bang, stressing if its good enough… It goes on and on and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve reached a lot of goals that I set for myself, one of which being able to travel internationally to play music, but there’s many to go and that excites me to no end.

Sofa Beats Series continues w/ Portugal duo ZEN RACOON by the artists also known as Zen Baboon.

Zen Racoon are Daniel Rosado and Henrique Palhavã. Both were born in the 70`s in Portugal and since an early age kept a close connection with the musical world, focusing on great sound quality and original construction. Daniel is a sound engineer that worked in a studio in Lisbon and started producing electronic music in the late 90′s. Henrique, a zoologist, lives and works in his own farm and started as an ambient DJ, ( ̈DJ Henriq ̈) and producer in 2001. They got together in 2003 and decided to melt their musical preferences and create Zen Racoon.

Andshe fuhr letztens mit uns nach Leipzig zum Auftakt unserer zweiten Sea-Watch Solitour und begeistert uns direkt, sowohl  künstlerisch als auch menschlich. Als Teil der Kollektive @kybelean und @rolandsons-seasidetrip war sie uns schon sehr nah, doch nun lernten wir sie endlich persönlich kennen und luden sie auch gleich zu unserem neu aufgelegten Resocast ein.
Sie ist DJ und Produzentin und veröffentlichte ihren ersten Track in der Hystereofonica Compilation über @tropicaltwistarecords. Mit einer erstaunlichen Sensibilität erkundet sie die Grenzen des Downtempo-Genres und lässt raushören, dass sie von der dunklen Berliner Szene beeinflusst und begeistert ist. So wie wir von ihr!

Aus herzhaft warmer Kehle, lacht und spricht sie frei (*1). Im Blick des frohen Mutes, wirft sie Witz und Mut herbei. Im Netzwerk starker Schwestern (*2), trotzt sie schallend klar, dem ewig Räume raubenden Partypatriachat.
In zugleich selig säumelnden und starken Schritten, steigt sie schnurstracks in stabile Höhen, doch auch in steilen Tiefen schroffen Seegangs (*3), greift sie liebevoll nach verwöhnenden Tönen.

Es sind viele Jahre vergangen , als ich die Idee hatte .. Musik mit Geschichten zu vereinen.
Nun entstand eine Interpretation in dem ich die Geschichten von Manfred Maser ( Texte ) , Nina Sander ( Sprecherin DE ) und Musik die ich sehr mag entlich vereint habe.

Auf dem Album  " Ich zeig Dir was " ( 2009 ) von Pit Baumgartner ( DE PHAZZ ) , Manfred Maser , Nina Sander und weiteren Musikern ,sind einige bezaubernden kleinen Geschichten ,sowie wundervolle Musik und unglaublich schöne Bilder von Christopher Winter  ( http://www.christopher-winter.com/gallery/virgin-forest-ii/small ) 
 zu finden.

Diese Interpretazion ist der erste Mix meiner geplanten * Themen Serie * mit dem Thema Geschichten und Musik. 
Geplant sind weitere Themenmixe , die ich nebst Casts ,Guest Mix , Mixtapes oder Interpretationen zukünftig veröffendlichen werde.

Für den heutigen Podcast haben wir das flämische Mysterium Hekske eingeladen uns eine musikalische Geschichte zu erzählen. Die „Bibi Blocksberg“ der downtempo Szene hat für uns eines ihrer bisher dunkelsten Sets aufgenommen und wandelt auf den Spuren des japanischen Haiku-Dichters Matsuo Bashō. Ihre Verbundenheit zu Kunst, Literatur und Natur spiegelt sich in dieser experimentellen deep story auf einzigartige Weise wieder. Taucht mit ihren verspielt düsteren Melodien in das Japan des 17. Jahrhundert ein und begeht die Fade des Wissens der alten Meister. Als Inspiration diente Hekske folgendes Haiku von Bashō.
