For mix number 17 in the PPRZ Podcast series, we have a mix from New York's aka-Sol @acaciabaila

aka-Sol is one of the monikers of the Ecuadorian DJ, producer, and multidisciplinary artist Sol León. Sol is based in Brooklyn and through their Acacia Baila label, they're also a connector: they've released their own tracks as León, Brouhaha and dp1x as well as collaborations alongside releases from artists all around the globe and the closed community. Sol is part of the collective running the "Dripping" event series and festival and also holds a residency at Mansions. As a DJ, their sets are dynamic, genre-defying and psychedelic, weaving musical stories that bridge the gap between heady, trippy sounds and percussive grooves that go straight to the body. As a live performer and composer Sol has gathered and directed multiple experimental multidisciplinary ensembles, working with electroacoustic musicians, dancers and visual artists to convey their expansive and mostly improvisatory based creations using all forms of extended scores with graphics, text and animated visuals. 

In addition to their solo work, León collaborates with a variety of artists, such as their new duo Gaze with Relaxer, as well as projects with Hank Shoklee (Public Enemy & The Bomb Squad), Nona Hendryx (Labelle), Jessica Mitriani, Juan Miguel Marin, Benton C. Bainbridge, Æirrin Ricks, Gryphon Rue, and many more. Their solo and collaborative work has been presented in The Museum of Modern Art of Bogota (MAMBO), The Hunter East Harlem Gallery, The Fridman Gallery (NY), Alice Yard (Port of Spain), Frieze week (NY), Sustain-Release Festival (NY), Nowadays (NY), Dripping (NY), Videoclub (BOG). 

Mix Description:
As a DJ that is interested in creating narratives with different styles of music and tempos I've been wanting to put together a mix focusing on the deep and psychedelic side of techno. I wanted to create a mix that feels like you are sliding down through an infinite spiral, sort of like when Alice goes down the rabbit hole. Seeing Rrose performing at Dripping was a big inspiration to aim for that hyper-textural and ever-expanding sound.

Glad to share with you the first volume of our new mix series, lazed. A monthly rendez-vous imagined as a new playground of musical expression focused on listening music. 

For this first episode, we're glad to welcome the artist Elvira. Inspired by her different sound practices in the performing arts and the electro-acoustic environment, she owns a very singular take on electronic music that is slowly making its way to ears around Europe. 

Elvira: « I imagined a cockroach wandering in a desert, the sun hitting hard causing dehydration leading to hallucinations. Sometimes voices appear, other times insects squeak. At some point the cockroach is tormented cus it falls on his back and is incapable of turning around. »

It had been a while since I wanted to make a slow mix, around 100 BPM.  I’ve been collecting quite a bit of music around that tempo that never gets to see the light of a dancefloor laser. The selection broadly belongs to the "noisy synth excursions” category, with a strong cinematic sensibility—I'm thinking John Carpenter's soundtracks, and lots of noise with a side of chaos.
