Paris is burning! And Eliott Litrowski lit the match with his latest EP for OOSSHA. The producer from France once saw the light in the famous Rex club in Paris but has a profound love for Dutch underground dance music. He previously released singles on Moustache and Bordello a Parigi and now debuts on Utrecht based SoHaSo sublabel OOSSHA.

On his Long Story Short EP, Litrowski combines the boldness of Dutch west coast electro with the flair and finesse of French techno, while throwing in a hint of sweet flavoured Italo vibes. A good example is Blind Pilot, which is both frivolous and funky.

Or jump the needle to Cereal Funk, where the dry hi-hats and wild arpeggio’s give more than a nod to Dopplereffekt, while staying in fourth gear. No wonder the track gets a remix treatment by Ed DMX, who turns Cereal Funk into a proper electro monster without losing the core futuristic elements. Long story short, Litrowski’s music is both playful, quirky and tailor made for clubs.

It had been several hours since the plane left the ground, bound for a far flung destination that was yet to be decided. Every passenger who embarked this plane left the location up to chance, in the hope of discovering something new, somewhere untouched and unspoilt by human hands. Nobody came home disappointed, and some didn't come home at all.

Following releases for Moustache, Bordello a Parigi and Permanent Vacation, French producer Eliott Litrowski makes his way to Utrecht-based imprint SoHaSo's offshoot OOSHA. Across the three original tracks on his 'Long Story Short' EP, he ties together his love of Dutch electro, French techno and Italo Disco, backed up by a heavy electro remix on the flip from a pioneer of the sound, DMX Krew.

Back in the nineties, Human Beings were pioneers in the Dutch techno scene. And The Matrix may well be their finest moment. SoHaSo gives this stone-cold classic the re-release it deserves, together with a magical Plaid-remix and a forgotten track, straight from DAT.

Together with Quazar and Fierce Ruling Diva, Utrecht-based duo Human Beings were among the very first brave enough to go live, back in 1992. Dance music was still called house or techno. Other flavors only came later.

Both Allert Aalders and Bert van der Grift were proper nerds. Their studio was filled to the brims with vintage synthesizers and drum computers and all machines were constantly challenged. Van der Grift sadly passed away in 2005 after a sudden cerebral haemorrhage, marking the abrupt end of Human Beings.

The Matrix ticks all the boxes of a proper Human Beings-tune: crystal clear melodies sweeping from corner to corner, ultra-clever drum programming and a main theme that knocks your socks right off. In the energetic live version, they have shaped the track to perfection. A secret weapon that works wonders on dancefloors, even 30 years later.

London duo Plaid strip The Matrix to its bare essentials, focusing on the main melody while giving the kick a bit more oomph in a Plaid kinda way.	

Ghost in the Shell is exactly that. A forgotten off-beat track, made during one of those many sessions in Bert's crampy studio. Its murky downtempo rhythms take a nod to both Meat Beat Manifesto and Renegade Sound Wave.

SoHaSo’s saga continues with a sound selection of singlets. Singular recordings from separate artists, bound together through Nuno Dos Santos’ spellbinding powers of creation and combination. The results are SOMEWHERE I and II: two compilations to be released digitally this summer, starting right here with part 1.	

Turning towards their inner selves, their deepest thoughts, their most hidden feelings, it seems that every single artist that was invited for SOMEWHERE I isn’t just delivering a track, no, they’re sharing a piece of themselves, showing a part that’s rarely seen or heard. From the ever evolving grooves of Love Over Entropy to the almost indie-electronica vibe of Polynation. From Sigward’s Moonfaced Oracle, chanting towards the stars, to Nuno dos Santos’ own Wibaut127, made as a last tribute to that one legendary club in Amsterdam that once was but now is no more. This and much more stories can be found when listening between the lines of every track.

The SOMEWHERE series feels like a sound based confessional. Telling unheard stories, exposing unseen surfaces and unheard sounds. A compilation to cherish, and one of which there’s another part on it’s way. SOMEWHERE II will be released later this summer, with both parts being made available on CD in very limited quantities.

An intriguing combination of names known and unknown, it’s once again testament that there’s so much happening, somewhere, all the time. And remember: this is only the first part.

As the name implies, Transmitting Illicit Logic is a tale that can’t be understood solely with our binary brain cells. Reality always escapes the corridors of the mind and fails to be caught in it’s believed opinions and oppositions. Cosmic Force is here to guide you through the maze and helps you to relax these muscles, trading it for a more direct energetic connection that will put you into hyperspace. 

Mighty Envy is an unforgiving piece of arp centred electro, pushing the envelope without letting go of the gas pedal. Pulsating bells along the way signal you onto the cosmic runway, there is no space left except to surrender. Haunted By My Past accelerates to even further places. Inspired by EBM it’s a funky dance floor workout in which a sexy AI tells you everything about you you’ve never wanted to know. The great digital escape, you’re trying to make way to the reboot button but finally find out the damn thing doesn’t exist.

In Transmitting Illicit Logic we first encounter an older AI model which got stuck in one of its own created habits and as a consequence is only left spitting out deranging synth arpeggio’s. After we pass him we find a doorway to a hidden bar… the rest is history. Grand Theft Auto meets stripped back robot moves. Finally, we have Silicon Scally remixing Transmitting Illicit Logic, warping you to an even tougher and weirder dimension.

Cosmic Force returns to Something Happening Somewhere for an all-out ghetto affair in collaboration with the mighty Dexter. Four relentless and unpretentious dance floor cuts with a high energy high fun(k) factor. It’s as high of a dose of the magical alchemy between man and derailing machines as you can find. Every second of this record feels like entering an unknown dangerous zone, blink once and someone could sweep out the motherboard beneath you and turn everything inside out. A robot’s brain disintegrating while you’re still plugged inside racing through it as everything slowly falls apart, without the safety programs to protect you. The great digital escape part II.

Drum Techniek is like taking a LCD drumbeat mixed in a blender with some vitalising capacitor hallucinogens. If the undeniable groove of the first one and a half minute isn’t enough, a jaw shattering bass line creates even more bad ass vigour. Geheugen Meuk’s unstoppable energy train is fuelled by a hypnotising stomping bass line that is intersected by warbled dystopian chords. Lost in the transistor mind, the memory chip slowly starts emitting smoke and shape shifts beyond the point of recognition. Leaving the gates open for uncontrollable off script imagination to reign.

Sloppenwijkkont takes the same approach as Geheugen Meuk but adds a more defined West Coast flavour. Baslijn In Opstand does exactly what it says on the can, like the electronic music interface decided to stop obeying and took over the controls to produce the music it favours. All this music is not for the faint hearted but will prove an incredible addition to anyones dance floor arsenal for those moments which need some extra psycholetric firepower.

SoHaSo is very happy to welcome an recently unknown entity on the label, Joannes is here with a fresh sound originating form the North of Holland. We all need to do shadow work once in a while, integrating our inner demons to create a more balanced reflection to carry out our lives from. The Got Needs EP provides the soundtrack for this personal journey, including delightful remixes by Nadia Struiwigh and Melatonin Man. 

Got Needs A1 is a powerful groove with heavily driven drum machines and 303 bassline for peak hour introspection, it doesn’t get more hypnotic than this. Melatonin Man strips down Joannes’ effort into a down-tempo electro affair containing some spell-binding rhythms that sure is to move some boo... 
On the B-side we find Joannes taking a more emotional approach, having pads and a cross rhythmic synth riff do the heavy lifting. Nadia Struiwigh takes these elements to the outer reaches of the universe. In her remix she slows it down and creates an intriguing dubby atmosphere with dystopian chords and industrial percussion.

In a time where dancing with others is forbidden, and most clubs in Europe remain closed, we felt it was time to shift gears. The fourth edition of our compilation series SOMEWHERE is best enjoyed lying down.15 tracks that will chill you out, put you at ease and comfort you in this difficult year.

It will not surprise you there is a strong Dutch presence on SOMEWHERE IV. Machine master Mattheis (best known for his stunning work on Nous’ Klaer) showers us with beautiful arpeggio’s that seem to stem straight from his modular. Fader from Borneo (but actually from Rotterdam) takes a much different approach, with long floating chords that move up and down like the surge near the shore after a violent storm. And then there is the sample wizardry by the experienced producer Love Over Entropy, who tackles analogue sounds and lets them run rounds in ever smaller concentric circles. It’s as hypnotic as it is intriguing.

There is something for everyone on SOMEWHERE IV. As long as you’re cool with absent kickdrums or aggressive hi hats. In fact, there is room for a kick. On the wonderful wonky 'Endure', by Utrecht based knob tweaker Vela Uniform. It’s one of the highlights of the album and it reminds us of the heydays of Warp’s Artificial Intelligence Series. Yes, it’s that good.

Another gem is 'Sometimes' by Machines of Loving Grace, an alter ego of the veteran dj & producer Eric de Man. He takes us to a nearly deserted rain forest, where birds and insects seem to go around in slow motion. De Man made this melancholic highlight more than 13 years ago. It clearly stood the test of time.

Ambient music has been around long before Brian Eno gave the genre it’s name. But over the last few years and thanks to a string of strong releases by artists like Huerco S, Kara Lis Coverdale and Kaitlyin Aurelia Smith, the genre is on the rise again. SOMEWHERE IV is the perfect antidote for stressful times and the sorrow of a closed down nightlife.
