Every two years composers, musicians and critics descend upon Darmstadt to discuss new music in the world. Some of these people decide to do Words On Music, to discuss music criticism, and discussion. Or at least they think.

Stockholm Syndrome: Kevin Free

In August 2023 legendary saxophonist, composer and pedagogue Anthony Braxton conducted a landmark performance by the Darmstadt Summer Course's first Creative Orchestra. In this short documentary we go behind the scenes to discover the story of how the performance came about, through the words of the participants, conductors and Anthony Braxton himself. We also hear from some of the extraordinary composers who were in the audience for the performance.

Stepping into Anthony Braxton's Musical Universe: Darmstadt Creative Orchestra: Sinead Hayes

This audio piece presents my personal reflections on, and journey through, rating concerts from the Darmstadt Summer Course 2023. How do we evaluate music? Is it possible to neatly categorise a piece as good, bad or average? Does a 10-point rating system truly capture the essence of musical value? Join me as I delve into my experience of rating concerts I've never attended, mistakenly labelling one as "pungent ear candy," and navigating the intricacies of a 10-point rating scale.

Rating Darmstadt: Marat Ingeldeev

This piece was initially inspired by the news stories about UFOs in the Supreme Court that I was following before arriving in Darmstadt. Rather than providing satisfactory answers to the questions asked throughout, the focus of the piece is on painting a picture of the slightly unhinged conversations about aliens and new music I subjected my colleagues to throughout the festival.

War Games is scored for flute/piccolo, B flat clarinet/bass clarinet, piano, violin and cello. This track comprises a recording of the work by Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble. I submitted War Games for Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble's first Peter Rosser Composition Competition (2016). Having been shortlisted, I was awarded first prize of £1000 at an event at which HRSE gave War Games its premier performance. HRSE's performance of War Games on BBC Radio 3's “Exposure” programme was aired on the 28th September 2017, thus broadcasting the piece to the nation.

War Games was composed as a musical commentary on the conflicts evident around the world in early 2016. Reading news articles concerning the rise of populism, nationalism, and violence perpetrated in the name of religion, I was struck by humanity's apparent inability/unwillingness to learn from past errors. This notion of historic recurrence inspired me to compose a work in which musical material is developed, but does not transform completely. The identity of  gestures therefore persists stubbornly throughout the course of the dramaturgy. Moreover, Marx's statement that history repeats itself, “first as a tragedy and second as a farce” had a significant influence on the design of the work's dramatic structure. Themes that occur in the introduction are parodied in the coda. Thus, the finale of the work is intended to serve as a sardonic reprise of the opening section. Scored for a small ensemble of wind, strings, and piano, War Games represents a synthesis between my long established employment of post-serial procedures and my newfound interest in sounds produced via unconventional performance techniques. My primary influences therefore range from Boulez and Ligeti to Lachenmann and Sciarrino.

The Living Layer + Vælv is taken from the new live album THE PIRAMIDA CONCERT by EFTERKLANG & COPENHAGEN PHIL - released June 10th 2013.

The Piramida Concert by Efterklang & Copenhagen Phil was recorded live at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Music Concert Hall in October 2012. Over the course of two sold-out nights Efterklang - plus Peter Broderick, Katinka Fogh Vindelev and Budgie (Siouxsie and The Banshees) - teamed up with classical orchestra Copenhagen Phil and German conductor André de Ridder to perform the Danish act's fourth album Piramida in its entirety. Staged for the first time at the Sydney Opera House in May 2012, the orchestral arrangements were written by fellow Dane Karsten Fundal and New York composer Missy Mazzoli. The Piramida Concert also features 'So', a song written during recording sessions for Piramida, and 'Vælv', a classical piece commissioned by Efterklang and composed by Karsten Fundal. The live performance was mixed to tape by Francesco Donadello in the Vox-Ton studio in Berlin.. The Piramida Concert will only be available digitally and as a limited edition deluxe double gatefold vinyl (one black, one white + CD inside), designed by Danish artists Hvass&Hannibal.
