Produced off the back of a profoundly inspiring trip to his homeland last year, Luigi Madonna crafts the pin-sharp ‘Italian Shocks’ EP. The Amsterdam-based artist is a key Drumcode contributor, who runs the label off the back of last year’s well-received collaborative EP ‘Mad World’ with Roberto Capuano. 

The title track is brain-spangling, industrial and brilliant, characterised by a suspenseful narrative, which is typical of Madonna’s creativity in the studio. ‘This is the Future’ is crisp and rolling, an intelligent tool for every set. ‘Enveloping Times’ is punchy and hypnotic, an immense transcendental belter ready to be unleashed this summer. ‘Interfrequencies’ is an exhilarating rush to the head, as a killer bass synth and piston-like drums for a rave-ready finish.

Slam deliver yet another on point release for Soma as the duo drop the Signifies EP. Stuart and Orde have been on fire of late with not only their releases doing the damage but with a string of gigs across the continent and their own Pressure events in their hometown of Glasgow going from strength to strength, the pair seem unstoppable at the moment. This latest EP once again shows great depth in their production going from hard- hitting techno to stripped back and jacked up machine funk.

Structure kicks things off and Slam state their intent on this one as one mean sounding hook plays the main role alongside fairly punishing drums. Title track Signifies is up next with yet more intelligently made patterns used a little more subtly but with no less impact. Functional closes out the EP and takes things a little deeper with is simple yet effect and pumped percussion striding across a tweeked out vocal sample.
With this huge release, Slam once again maintain their claim as being one of the most innovative acts in electronic music right now.

For our next release we look south to two of Italy’s finest exports and rising stars: Luigi Madonna and Roberto Capuano. Both hailing from the coastal city of Naples, the two have been on fire for some time now and their ‘Midfield’ EP is a perfect representation of their approach and sound that is winning dancers the world over. Kicking things off is the title track ‘Midfield’ with infectious percussion, hefty drums and an absolutely unforgettable lead that will, without any doubt, create full on dance floor mayhem. ‘Wendy’ follows up with rapid fire drumming and a soul drenched vocal laid over a booming kick drum resulting in a simple yet highly effective sonic excursion. Rounding out the EP is ‘Dark Soul’ which does the job using only percussive elements like racing shakers and colossal, crunchy impacts balanced perfectly with a lush vocal shot placed a few times throughout the track in the most effective moments. – In short, three stunning tunes from our Italian cohorts Luigi Madonna and Roberto Capuano to be played loud and often!

While the world takes a forced hiatus from clubbing, Risa Taniguchi’s new EP for Second State offers a visceral hit of big room energy and dancefloor transcendence. "How We Dance Again“ reminds us of the incomparable unification and freedom found on the dancefloor and soundtracks the celebration that awaits once the club doors reopen.

The title track bristles with untamed intensity, spiky, ravey synths and tantalising breakdowns. It’s a thrilling peak-time cut destined to cause absolute chaos in venues around the globe. "Slipped My Mind“ takes a slightly moodier tack, threaded with tickling synths, chilly atmospherics and a crisp, distant voiceover. “It just... slipped my mind,” Taniguchi murmurs. The keys on "Sodium“ would almost sound housey if they weren’t so dark in tone, sending a doomy memo perfectly pitched for the witching hour. Closing track "Unchained“, meanwhile, sets a weirder, wonkier tone. A portentous, distorted male vocal has a hypnagogic effect, offset by zippy stabs and a thumping kick.

On this storming, all-killer pack, Taniguchi – whose bonding with Pan-Pot’s label Second State reaches a new level – proves why she’s one of Tokyo’s hottest exports whose future star status is more than certain.

Footwork’s head honcho Jay Lumen pays homage to his trademark heavy bassline and vocal samples in his contribution ‘Dust’, a rasping cut with a rebounding male vocal, that evolves into rave territory for its final ascent.
