As we eagerly await the debut Edit Select album on Soma, the illustrious Glasgow based producer drops Horizon. Another clinical and wonderfully crafted EP that sees him continue his strong run of form, combining a teaser from the album itself alongside 2 exclusive compositions.

Variation 2.1 opens this latest release as Scott gradually builds with spaced out percussive elements and hauntingly ominous pad structures. The perfect opening track for any Techno set. Providing a glimpse into the the forthcoming album, Horizon#2 delivers a more emotive journey. Hypnotic drums and bell like percussion gently guide the ever evolving soundscapes that echo from the void. Closing out the single, The Space Between harks to Basic Channel/Maurizio like grooves with a more mechanical, pervasive edge. The trademark Edit Select ethereal melancholy is never far.

A suitably deep, stirring release and a perfect accompaniment to what is an outstanding LP

As we gradually build toward the release of Rebekah’s debut album on Soma, the hard hitting DJ/producer drops her 3rd single in the shape of the Code Black EP. Rebekah is on somewhat of a frenzied run of form at the moment with not only an exhaustive touring schedule but a slew of releases that stand as a testament to her dedication to Techno. 

Title track Code Black hits the ground running with ice cold percussion and thunderous kicks running the show before a more jacking vibe is introduced backed by some seriously perilous pads. Disaster looms even more as Relapse Paradigm tears in next with clunking beats and straight percussive workouts as screeching synths and hooks give an overall foreboding atmosphere. X Confessions closes out the EP in no less vicious terms and Rebekah sets out on the warpath utilising pulsing rhythms and calamity inducing sequences to really rip into the dance floor.

With each release, Rebekah hones her skills and never fails to deliver her very best.

Round 2 of the Soma 25 series sees the legendary Funk D’Void receive the remix treatment as his seminal ‘Jack Me Off’  taken from his debut Soma EP and further classic ‘Bad Coffee’ are reworked by Gary Beck, Christian Wunsch, Alex Smoke & Charles Fenckler respectively. FDV has been one of Soma’s most important artists, releasing some of the label’s earliest hits such as Diabla and working with the likes of Phil Kieran & Sian.

Scottish Techno phenomenon Gary Beck kicks things off with his take on Bad Coffee firing out a solid peak time burner in true Beck fashion and utilising the original’s quirky samples to great effect. Next up Jack Me Off is brought in the modern era by Tsunami label boss, Christian Wunsch who immediately sets about creating a sub heavy, hypnotic affair aimed firmly at the heavier edge of the Techno spectrum. Another well renowned Soma artist steps up to take on Jack Me Off as Alex Smoke brings his more diverse expertise to the table. A twisted, funk infused affair is the order of the day with fast paced and innovative use of the original definitely taking it to new places! Soma’s new blood, Charles Fenckler closes out the EP with his Rave Mix of Bad Coffee. Fenckler’s sights are firmly fixated on the dance floor with this version as he lets loose a no holds barred retake on FDV’s original.

Forest Drive West - Haze

Ostgut Ton’s Berghain mix series returns with volume 08 by Fiedel. Available on 12” vinyl are four new exclusive tracks by Electric Indigo, Stefan Rein, rRoxymore and Boris & Fiedel. 

Few figures in Berlin dance music can claim as lasting and multifaceted a presence as longtime Berghain resident Fiedel. A former resident at Berghain forerunner OstGut, the veteran DJ and producer is known by heads for his decades-long influence on left-field techno and bass music in the German capital, particularly as one half of celebrated production duo MMM with Errorsmith, and co-operator of the legendary Wax Treatment parties together with Mark Ernestus of Hard Wax and Basic Channel fame. Indeed, Fiedel’s broad vision of what works on the dance floor is informed by grooves both in and outside the realm of 4/4 – from, acid, electro and jungle to hip-hop, dub und breaks – all subtly present in hybrid forms on previous releases for Ostgut Ton and his own Fiedelone and Fiedeltwo imprints. So it makes sense that the four exclusive tracks he has curated for the 8th edition of the Berghain mix series radiate the same off-kilter, bass-heavy and deep techno sensibility. 

Veteran Viennese producer, activist and DJ Electric Indigo kicks blasts things off with “Registers”, employing her trademark dubby and sample-heavy rhythmic constructions, minor chords and distorted hats. Driving and atmospheric, “Registers” sets the bar high not only for the 12-inch but also as the explosive opener for the mix itself. This is followed on A2 by PURE-TRAXX founder Stefan Rein, whose deep, hypnotic “Panther” transcends techno-tool status with entrancing siren melodies and psychedelic builds and releases. 

French-born, Berlin-based producer rRoxymore takes a sonic left turn on B-Side opener “Tropicalcore”, where bleepy, distorted and complex drum patterns recall both classic DMZ and later post-dubstep funk. Finally, B2 belongs to Fiedel himself, who teams up with fellow veteran Berghain resident and Berlin techno stalwart Boris on “Div’hain”. The track teems with with bubbling bass-lines, cowbells and claps shaped by modular synths, as well as elements of electro and boogie – but jacks hard. It’s a fitting closer to one of the mix series’ most eclectic 12-inches – made by one of Berghain’s most fearless residents.

Soma present a exclusive set of remixes taken from the debut album of the still unknown duo, Gemini Voice Archive. The pair have had an incredible journey so far on Soma with huge support across the techno world, made up of DJs & fans alike. The remix EP sees Slam, Inigo Kennedy & Matrixxman select their favourites from the album and give them their own interpretation.

Slam are up first with the space age Framauro’s Plains. The Soma label heads quickly and expertly delve head first with a fairly intense remix utilising the original’s hook but with more aggression. The maestro, Inigo Kennedy serves up a unique and almost Orchestral version of Singularity. He carves up the original beautifully adding finely tuned soundscapes. Closing out the EP is a more downbeat and dubbed out remix from Matrixxmann. His version of Significant Proportion of The Speed Of Light is a more subtle & atmospheric affair - typical of his style. 

There’s plenty more to come from the GVA boys with 2 more singles slated for 2018. Watch this space.

A unique and well constructed sequence sits atop pervasive kicks, utilising subtle vocals and layered percussion to work the groove. 1 9 9 4 O N harks to tougher times with huge broken kick patterns, twisted synths elements and a darker vibe throughout. Things get deeper and more tripped out with Fano. Here, a more hypnotised & narcotic feeling is in effect with percussive and synth elements washing in and out of the mix whilst still retaining a solid drive. Delafix closes out the EP bringing together Tensal’s creative range under one track. The hypnotic tripped out vibe is prevalent throughout as vigorous drum workouts keep things at a fairly fast pace. 

Tensal in undeniably one of modern Techno’s most well respected and innovative producers and one that continues to add to his already prodigious catalogue.

Hybris is a state of dissoluteness, of loss of control, of greed and of lustfulness. Following that motto, Wice takes his listeners on a journey through a hybristic process on his second Steinlach EP, which chooses an enchanting and euphemistic entrance into hybris with Absent (No Aggression). Gentle pads create a peaceful and dreamy world that is turned into a fascinating landscape of sound by trippy drums and dopey synths and so pushes wide open the gate to hybris. The threateningly booming HB11 then finally enters the state of hybris: synths and drums pump adrenalin in heads and bodies, dancing turns into greed, the complete lack of control sets in. That lack of control riots towards its peak with the eponymic Hybris, which tears the listener in technoid and gritty manner into the abyiss of hybris and holds him captive down there. Hybris is followed by Nemesis, the devine punishment ending in death: Wice interprets this transition towards Nemesis with Hertz, a playful and breaky good-night kiss, which feels pretty damn good and resonates bittersweetly. Jacob Husley - Le Côté Obscur ft The French Edge

Denmark born MHM One teams up with local band Atoi to deliver the seventeenth release for prolific house and techno label and party WetYourSelf!, in the form of the ‘Once Upon A Time’ two track EP. His ultra creative deep house and techno cuts are already well known after releases on the likes of Tartelet, Fantastic Friends and Fake Diamond, as well as longstanding residencies at Copenhagen’s Culture Box and Zur Wilden Renate, Berlin.
 
Original track ‘Once Upon A Time’ sees MHM One explore his playful side, without losing sight of his inherent musicality and artistic instinct. Bongos, a dub-tinged bassline and breathy gasps set the scene for the slow burning house track where melody takes a humble back seat. A striking spoken word vocal steals the limelight until a mystical woodwind ensemble springs up to welcome a greater focus on minor organ chords and lively flutters and trills.
 
The late Martin Dawson has twisted MHM One’s unusual track parts into an instantly more driving remix, where the subtle bass notes take on a more relentless quality, melodic riffs are brought straight to the fore and the percussion takes on a more traditional dance floor focus. Interestingly, the remix only makes use of the sounds of the original, albeit heavily manipulated. Staying true to Dawson’s great legacy, he at no point loses the playful essence of MHM One’s original work.
