VARIA is pleased to present the next episode in its podcast series, featuring EJA.

EJA is the solo alias of one half of Duplicity, a now London based label and podcast series. As Duplicity, EJA emerged onto the local Scottish scene in late 2019, playing at events around Edinburgh and Glasgow. As Duplicity, EJA has led the direction and spearheaded the label's overall sound through careful curation of podcast guests & artists for the label's releases, which have seen solid success. 

EJA focuses on deep, hypnotic, groovy and loopy elements, largely inspired by artists such as Rene Wise, Setaoc Mass, DVS1, MARRØN, Kaiser and has been working on his own productions, with a growing arsenal of unreleased works and a few select releases which have had consistent global support from the likes of Slam, DVS1, Beste Hira, Lobster, Justine Perry, Lea Occhi, Laura Van Hal, Vinicius Honorio, Border One, Kaiser, Annabel Arroyo, Lacchesi and been released on labels like SOMA, Duplicity, BCCO, .defaultbox, Calosc, PRTLWRX.

This episode continues VARIA’s mission: championing considered electronic expression and lasting artistry.

VARIA 026 - EJA

The term annex typically describes a structure joined to a main building, offering extra space or function. In this spirit, Tresor Records revives the ANNEX series with a new end-of-year collection that serves as an extension of the label and club’s output, adding to the creative life that has unfolded within Köpenicker Str. 70 over the past years.

Since the club moved in 2007, the Kraftwerk complex has been repurposed from its original use as a power station to fulfil multiple functions that bring people together to collaborate and congregate: Office, venue, club, exhibition space, and home to the Berlin Atonal festival, the Tresor Foundation, and the Academy of Subcultural Understanding. With the arrival of the Hard Wax record shop in 2023, the building now offers another way for the like-minded to come together and to share ideas in a common space.

ANNEX echoes the many roles of the building by fostering introduction, connection, and creation: all of the music within was created by individuals directly linked to Tresor: from club staff and residents to Hard Wax employees and long-time friends.

Across 28 tracks, the compilation unites artists from various backgrounds and generations, some collaborating for the first time, creating a moment in motion as Tresor heads into a new year.

DJ, producer and label manager Marcel Fengler is the best example that talent isn’t just a matter of luck, but the will to believe in your own passions while constantly developing them. Today, Fengler has not only been quoted as "one of the finest techno DJs“ (Resident Advisor), he has earned international respect for his "well-crafted body of production work“ (FACT) introducing his unique and "multi-faceted personality“ (Electronic Beats).
For almost three decades, Fengler has developed a versatile and dynamic DJing style, making him one of the first resident DJs at Berlin’s legendary Berghain / Panorama Bar in 2005. Known for his ability to shift pace, atmosphere, and energy in response to the dance floor, he seamlessly moves between industrial-drenched hardness, broken beats, gloomy dubs, and melodic grooves.
In 2011, Fengler launched his imprint, Index Marcel Fengler (IMF), a label dedicated to his timeless techno vision while serving as a platform for emerging talent. This philosophy took on new dimensions in 2024 with the launch of "KISHIKAN", an event series combining elements of his "IMF label showcases", "Marcel Fengler Invites" events and the newly established HARDPROOF VA project. With KISHIKAN, Fengler contiznues to push boundaries, creating a fresh space for artistic innovation and musical exploration.

Soma Records are pleased to present an extra special compilation of tracks from the last year, mixed exclusively by Gary Beck in what is his first ever commercially available mix CD. After the hugely successful 20th anniversary celebrations, Soma continued with their high quality output right through 2012, forging ahead with new and old artists alike. 2012 saw the debut album from Gary himself that immediately made its mark on the techno world, demonstrating his amazing talent as not just a techno producer but as an artist. Further albums from Deepchord who followed up his first album on Soma with the deep and uniquely expressional ‘Sommer’ that also spawned 2 separate vinyl releases. Heavy hitters Pig & Dan showed the versatility of Soma’s output also with their own 10 year anniversary album ‘Decade’ complete with fantastic remixes from Justin Berkovi, Carlo Lio & more. On the singles front, there were some particular standouts. Soma stalwarts Slam & Silicone Soul also released new material that became instant classics in the house & techno world. New signing Mark Reeve burst onto the scene with his Dice EP, Harvey McKay collaborated with Saytek on the tough as you like ‘Push EP’ and we also saw the Envoy classic, Detroit inspired techno groover, Seawall, reworked by Chilean wonder producer Ricardo Villalobos. All in all, making it a very tough decision to compile last year’s tracks into one CD! Gary’s mix is a perfect example of why he has become one of the busiest DJs around. Kicking things off with Deepchord’s perfectly dubbed out ‘Tonality Of Night”, Gary quickly picks up the pace, moving fervently through tracks from Joe Stawarz, Heiko Laux & Steve Rachmad into Claude Von Stroke’s excellent mix of Scott Grooves’ Mothership Connection. Mark Henning’s infectious “You’re Digging Into Me’ funks things up before launching head first into the peak of the mix with Pig & Dan and Mark Reeve tracks doing the damage along with Gary’s own ‘Algoreal’. Exclusive to the Soma21 compilation is the Christian Smith & Wehbba remix of the eternal Funk D’Void classic ‘Diabla’. This unforgettable track is given a very modern day rework and doesn’t fail to trigger in all the right places. As the mix begins to wind down we find Gary finishing off in epic style with the fantastic Matthias Tanzmann rework of Silicone Soul’s ‘Right On, Right On’. Closing on Ricardo Villalobos’ interpretation of Envoy’s ‘Seawall’.
