Somethin' Else takes on a long drone into the psychedelic improvisations of the Taj Mahal Travellers. This cult Japanese free-wheeling drone based improvising unit, recorded in the early 70s on the top of mountain tops and beaches for hours and hours, creating some beguiling music unlike anything that had come before. Only 3 records were released in their days in the sun. This week's show takes all its material for 2 records

Somethin' Else - Cardinal Fuzz part 2 16-4-24

Somethin' Else this weeks explores the unusual sounds created over the last 40 years by uncompromising work of Ross Bolleter. Bolleter's main preoccupation has been with the sound world of "runied" pianos. "A piano is said to be ruined (rather than neglected or devastated) when it has been abandoned to all weathers, say on a sheep station or tennis court, with the result that few or none of its notes sound like that of an even-tempered uptight piano". Bolleter's explorations have led to some of the most interesting and innovative free music.

Somethin’ Else is a weekly radio show in the Bellingen shire of mid North Coast NSW, Australia, delving deep into music forms that exists on the outer edge, taking the listener on a journey into who, why and how of music creation…touching on avant-garde, experimental expression, free jazz, weird folk, post punk, psych, minimalism and much more. At times focusing on an artist, micro-scene, labels or specific genre, Tune in and have your ears and mind challenged!

Presenter Mark Morris has spent many years before moving to Australia, working in the music industry, from his early days at Ray’s Jazz Shop in Soho, London, independent record labels, culminating in the curation of his own record label Bo’ Weavil Recordings. A labour of love, Bo’ Weavil catalogued free jazz, noise, drone and folk from contemporary musicians while reissuing long out of print gems from across the globe. Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to his weekly broadcasts.
