Thie week's Somethin' Else takes a look at the short-lived label 'Obscure Records'.  Curated by Brian Eno, in its 3 years of existence between 1975-1978 Obscure Record released 10 LP by a number of contemporary avantgarde players of the era. From the ambient systems recordings of Brian Eno's 'Discreet Music' to the pop-folk-jazz compositions of Penguin Cafe Orchestra and a lot more inbetween. This was recorded at the 2BBB studios in Bellingen broadcasted on Tuesday 8-10pm and repeated on Sundays 4-6pm 107.3 and 93.3fm

In March of this year (2024) Haino appeared in London for a 3 day residency at Cafe Oto, so today's show covers a few of these recent events, as the world wide web shrinks the world a little bit. It's not the same as being there, but better than nada!.

Somethin' Else - Keiji Haino Part 3 - Live Residency 26 - 3-24

Somethin' Else this weeks explores the unusual sounds created over the last 40 years by uncompromising work of Ross Bolleter. Bolleter's main preoccupation has been with the sound world of "runied" pianos. "A piano is said to be ruined (rather than neglected or devastated) when it has been abandoned to all weathers, say on a sheep station or tennis court, with the result that few or none of its notes sound like that of an even-tempered uptight piano". Bolleter's explorations have led to some of the most interesting and innovative free music.

In case you are unaware, Slacky is a DJ and curator based in West Yorkshire who runs the Space Ritual label. In addition to this, he is a co-director of the wonderful Narr Radio. 

Being heavily influenced by acid house, techno, krautrock and psychedelic music, his mixes often create an intergalactic voyage for the dance-floor and today's mix is no different, featuring the likes of CPI, Zu Mu Party Crew, Coil, Jenson Intercepter, I-F, and much much more.

Highest recommendation to this little known Irish label.

Somethin’ Else is a weekly radio show in the Bellingen shire of mid North Coast NSW, Australia, delving deep into music forms that exists on the outer edge, taking the listener on a journey into who, why and how of music creation…touching on avant-garde, experimental expression, free jazz, weird folk, post punk, psych, minimalism and much more. At times focusing on an artist, micro-scene, labels or specific genre, Tune in and have your ears and mind challenged!

Presenter Mark Morris has spent many years before moving to Australia, working in the music industry, from his early days at Ray’s Jazz Shop in Soho, London, independent record labels, culminating in the curation of his own record label Bo’ Weavil Recordings. A labour of love, Bo’ Weavil catalogued free jazz, noise, drone and folk from contemporary musicians while reissuing long out of print gems from across the globe. Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to his weekly broadcasts.
