It all started in the late 80’s. I was like 12 years old when I found a tape called ‘Dr. Acid & Mr. House’. Since then, and while I was on holidays in Spain, I plugged in forever! Later on, I was composing my first tracks with the ‘Protracker’ soft (Commodore ‘Amiga’, 4 tracks, 8 bits!) under the nickname ‘Chinook’. During the mid-90’s, after having frequented the international House scene (France, Italy, Spain, USA, and above all Switzerland), I started as a DJ under the name of ‘Tchiko’ (a.k.a. Rico Tinelli). Sitting on radio shows as ‘Culture Dance’ (Radio Framboise) or ‘Métissages’ (Couleur 3), regularly on Meyrin FM (Back on Plastic), ‘One FM’ or ‘Rhône FM’, 

I performed all around french speaking Switzerland in places like the ‘Montreux Casino’, ‘Palladium’, ‘New Morning’, ‘Rêve d’Ô’, ‘Ancien Palais’, and many others. I ended (definitively?) my DJ career in 2001 with the famous compilation ‘Mythical Funk & Disco Hour’ and the second volume called ‘Mythical Funk & Soul Hour’. As I had neglected a bit the composition aspect during that period, I came back in force around 2004, working on PC, first with ‘Modplug’, then with ‘Fruity Loops’. Since 2009 I work mainly on ‘Adobe Audition 3’ and ‘FL Studio’, supported by ‘Roland', 'Vermona', 'Jomox', ‘AKG' and 'Behringer' Hardwares. I was surrounded by music from a young age; when I was only 2 or 3 (in the late 70s) I knew already by heart many Disco hits (special mention to 'Michael Zager Band - Let's All Chant' but also ‘El Coco' or ‘Boney M.’, among others) and Italian pop songs (Adriano Celentano, Jimmy Fontana, Nico Fidenco, ...). I like almost all styles of music, as long as they can arouse emotions.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Deaf Safari is an audio collage of subjects that interest me and speak of the world I live in.
It is an album composed of sampled recordings from the media landscape that has been the soundtrack to my life over the last ten years.

The most important development in my current music and as can be heard on Deaf Safari has been my understanding of the beauty and power of the spoken word. I have experienced severe indifference to contemporary pop and electronic music as a whole over the last many years, as I have felt that social comment of any relevance has been ignored by music in general.
Deaf Safari attempts to bring sociopolitical comment into my music without taking any specific stand.
Sampled outside of musical influence directly from the news; from preacher sermons or from contemporary African documentaries.
I have finally created a story with sound that I feel accurately conveys my personal experience with the African world I live in.

My musical influences on this album lie mostly with local Kwaito house. Deaf Safari is an experiment within certain boundaries of the 4/4 genre, to create my own South African "house" album.
I am proud and inspired about the South African Kwaito house scene.
However, as with my first three albums, "Thin Shoes In June“ (2001) - "4/4 Down The Stairs“ (2002) and "Dark Days Exit“ (2005), I am still interested in making strange and evocative music.

American Roots music from the earlier periods of the 20th century has deeply resonated with me during the making of this album.
The incredible field recordings by Alan Lomax of Negro prison and chain gang work songs, and the
beautiful early recordings of artists such as Leadbelly have had a major influence on Deaf Safari.

I am truly excited to release this album and to start performing in the music world again. It has been ten years since I released "Dark Days Exit , and although I have been purposefully absent from the music world, I have none the less never stopped making music.
I feel that I have finally arrived at a mature and challenging stage in my pursuit of making emotional music of relevance .

It is only natural and consistent for Pete Josef to release his debut album on Berlin based label Sonar Kollektiv, since it is the very same imprint he has been featured on in numerous productions over the last three years – as a singer and as a songwriter.  The close link with Sonar Kollektiv took it's course when in autumn 2012 label manager Oliver Glage signed “Make It Good” by The White Lamp (Josef's project together with Ex-Underworld member Darren Emerson), for the label.  From there, he has made contributions to Alex Barck's album “Reunion”, to tracks with Paskal & Urban Absolutes and Marlow, and to “Broken Connection” off the debut album by ComixXx released just recently.  

The young Brit, inspired over the years by such collaborations, and socialized in the lively Bristol scene, has come up with an 11-track strong masterpiece of modern pop music.  In the opening track, “Spring At Last”, he and singer Marie Lister, accompanied by Justin “Captain” Fellow's industrious drumming and a host of Bristol String and Horn players, praise the thrill of anticipation of all the things to come.  For instance, a powerful pinch of dance grooves and soul/Jazz elements – always connected to the here and now without making any retro references at any point along the course.

“Mistress”, with screaming guitars and yet more powerful horn arrangements, reminiscent of Donny Hathaway’s “Voices Inside”, could almost be a new Stevie Wonder record.  In “Move On” Josef's Jazzpop turns Country-Ska, most notably thanks to his West African style claw-hammer guitar playing and some inspired drumming from Greg Freeman.  And on “Night Gospel” it is the piano that surfaces, over a lilting programmed, club-compliant beat.  Variety is guaranteed in every respect.. “Live Your Life” is a downright Afro-Jazz anthem complete with scat singing, off-beat double bass from Roshan ‘Tosh’ Wijetunge, and the mantra-like repeated chorus: “live your life, live it well”.  Whilst the Neo-Soul ambience of Running in series and Many Signs lament lost and broken love, new love is later expressed clearly as Josef carols.. “feeling the new; feeling cupids smile descend” on the buoyant, summery “Something Good”. 

The production of “The Travelling Song” has just a hint of the legendary Steely Dan productions, albeit with a modern almost hip-hop slant, and builds to put the listener into a firmly euphoric space with a Samba-funk rhythm section crafted by the virtuoso percussionist Rory Francis.  In short, “Colour” is every shade of the rainbow, from bright light, to contemplative dark.  “Hope” has all the colours in one, with lyrical positivity set against almost mournful Afrobeat ballad accompanied.  It is a setting of the poem by Emily Dickinson (“hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul”), and features a glorious improvised solo by free-Jazz trumpeter, Nick Malcolm; in which he virtually embodies the bird described in the verse through his fluttering expressive melodies.  In closing, as the album's finale, we are treated to the title track “Colour” ..and it is here where Pete Josef reveals where much of his inspiration, his optimism and his balance of mind springs from: it is his love of nature, in all it’s wondrous colour that is subtly expressed throughout his music.  Therefore not only the song “Colour”, but the whole album is de facto an ode to nature, together with the shades of emotion we all experience in our lives.  No surprise here then that Mr. Josef recently settled in a cottage in rural Somerset amid forests, meadows, and close to the natural world he loves so much.

Black Book is OBLIGÉ at their most theatrical, macabre, and mythic.
Each track resurrects an ancient, unsanitized fairy tale — the versions whispered before they were made safe — sung through the sharp, haunting clarity of a female soprano with operatic power (but not opera in style).

The album unfolds like a cursed midnight cabaret in a condemned theatre: crooked waltzes, ritual percussion, parlor piano, bowed bass, scraping strings, and ghostly backing vocals.
Every tale uses its own cultural “bones,” so the songs never repeat structure, yet the album remains cohesive in mood and world.

Between certain stories, instrumental interludes serve as stage shifts — the lights dim, the curtains breathe, the Black Book turns its own pages.

By the end, the singer discovers she herself is written into the final chapter.

This is OBLIGÉ’s darkest, most narrative-driven work:
a folklore requiem stitched with dread, beauty, and the cold breath of old stories.
