THE COLLABORATION
This X6402 Collaboration is with 'TaNezha'  (Tetyana Nizhynska) who is a singer based in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The lyrics were written and sung by TaNezHa, a capella, in the style of a traditional Folk song. 'Six Four Zero Two' created the music, responding emotionally to the story and mood: "I wanted the music to soar and weave fluidly around the constant that is the voice".

THE TRACK
‘Stepan’ is a story about the strength of a young girl whose partner goes off to war and is lost for some time. When the people eventually gather to hail the Cossacks triumphant return, he is not with them. The girl is forlorn and returns home where, she finds him waiting in the courtyard. A joyful return to love, peace and their homeland.

LYRICS:
Translation from Ukrainian.

There, in the meadow at the edge of the forest, a girl was walking,
looking for healing thyme, mint and roses.
She was singing as she walked "I am collecting the potion for Stepan,
so he can stay strong and defeat the enemies".

When she went to the valley she saw Cossacks,
returning home to Nenka (homeland) in a big crowd.
"Oh, you men, you dear fellows, how happy I am to see you.
Where is my beloved Stepan? I yearn to see him".

"Oh my dear, we do not know, he did not follow.
We know not of his fate, we have not seen him".
The sweet girl burst into tears and went home.
“Where have you gone, my Stepan? My eternal love".

"Oh, you dear man, if only you all would come back home.
Let all of our enemies be gone!", the sweet girl cried.
Then, as she entered the yard she saw Stepan,
waiting there, to joyfully meet his beloved girl.

Started as bass groove after going to a Thundercat gig, needed something else so came up with the 11 note repeating figure on guitar which was then doubled on keys to give an almost Steve Reich type effect. 

One to check out start to finish if you have the time, thanks for listening. For the guitar geeks there's a wee solo at the end.

Drums: NI Karriem Riggins.
Bass: Warwick 5-string Corvette through NI Guitar Rig and during the 11 note sequence section sustained notes on NI Monark synth bass.
Guitars: Suhr Custom Classic and Strandberg Salen Jazz through a few instances of NI Guitar Rig. Short solo at the end is the Suhr.
Keys: various NI, Arturia and Spitfire.
Mastering: Ozone 10 Standard.
DAW: Ableton 12.

method: crave, voice, vt 4, reface dx, voice, r20, samplitude ... it's more or less in b locrian, I guess ... a fitting mode.
Narration: the original title is ‘70s synthesizer‘ in the cycle SONIC CASCADES (as published in A SINGLE LOOP OF FORTUNES). imagine a family in Western Germany. it‘s the 1970s and  conforming to strict norms is the latest rage wherever the youth invasion (o for the horrors of the 'gammler'!!!!) had to be fought off. I spent the decade (and more) going to school and trying to cope with fellow human beings …. and there still was this all encompassing being …..  the best mode of survival (at that age, at any age) was identification …..

This threshold space exists for those who feel like listening to some of my quite professional poetry embedded in rather amateurishly recorded but judiciously arranged sound, a modicum of purely acoustic work notwithstanding. SOUND, SPACE AND TIME

Tend your listening senses gently. Even though my general approach welcomes and embraces lo-fi concepts like the precision of spontaneously occuring imprecisions, headphones worth their membranes are recommended - unless you like your sounds flat, mangled, battered and helpless. You don't, do you? Be kind to these soundscapes.

STRUCTURING IMPULSE

Due to the nature of "poetry soundscapes", your listening expectations regarding traditionally structured "songs", sonically purified "raw wildlife soundscapes", keyboard-laden "ambient recordings" or voice-centered "readings" might not be met. You will find some of those in my list of /likes/. "Noise" is a recurring structural element like any other. This is what this sounds like - within its own rights, limitations, tangents and interconnections. Sonic structures. Silent stretches. Poetry emerges from the gaps between the ruts, seeps in from the undergrowth, sweeps down.

Above, there is a tiny poem of mine that I do not understand how to translate into sound. If you do - please act on it. It is a matter of common decency, of course, to keep the title (Small Gifts) and to credit the lyrics to me (jo richter). And please do notify me of your version via a soundcloud message. This is just a small gift, not a challenge - life already has more than enough of those on offer, doesn't it? Treat it this way.
